Shri Subir Kumar Sen is no more with us. Yesterday night, he passed away at his residence in Kolkata. He has retired last year as the Associate Professor at the Department of Library & Information Science, University of Calcutta. He was associated with many organisations such as INSDOC, IASLIC and many science forums. He was one of the Editor of JISSI: The International Journal of Scientometrics and Informetrics. My association with Shri Sen went back to 2000 when I first joined the BLISc course at the University of Calcutta. I know him as a great teacher, a thorough mentor,and a soulful guide. He was very energetic and thoughtful. He was a good science-writer -- very much with the science of Bengal. Even his failing health off late could not deter him from writing and contributing to science. Being student of his, I have many fond memories associated with him. So many to tell! But in this hour of grief, I condole his relatives. Its a great loss to all of us! Shri Sen was a great human being and a great teacher. He will live for ever in the hearts of his students. May his soul rest in peace! 'Wikipedian' hired at Ford presidential library The Gerald R. Ford Library at the University of Michigan is taking steps to make its collections available for all visitors, even virtual ones. The university has announced that Michael Barera is the nation's first Wikipedian-in-residence at a presidential library. The School of Information master's student is interning at the presidential library to help bring its collections to life online. Exhibit specialist Bettina Cousineau said the goal is to reach out to "the broadest possible audience" and make the "content accessible to everyone, everywhere." Similar positions have been held at other museums and libraries, but this is the first time a presidential library has hosted one. Australian Library Employee Jokes About Moving Lance Armstrong Books to Fiction Section

By Sonia van Gilder Cooke Time This past Saturday, an employee at an Australian library put up a sign announcing that its Lance Armstrong books would be relocated to the fiction section, after the famous cyclist admitted to doping on his way to seven Tour de France victories. The sign in the Manly Library, located in a suburb of Sydney, said: “ALL NON-FICTION LANCE ARMSTRONG BOOKS, INCLUDING ‘Lance Armstrong: Images of a Champion’, ‘The Lance Armstrong Performance Program’ and ‘Lance Armstrong: World’s Greatest Champion’ WILL SOON BE MOVED TO THE FICTION SECTION. THANK YOU, MANLY LIBRARY” Several patrons snapped pictures of the tongue-in-cheek message, which concludes with a smiley face, and posted them to Twitter and Reddit. The sign quickly went viral. The employee who created it isn’t exactly being praised for his creativity, however. “There will be an internal review with the person who put the signage up,” Wendy Ford, the acting manager of the Manly Library told the Sydney Morning Herald. “He didn’t have any authority to make a statement on behalf of the library.” Ford said the sign was put up “as a bit of a joke” by a college student who works occasional shifts. “He didn’t mean it to be offensive in any way,” she said. “He just thought it was something that would be humorous and didn’t for one minute think it would be as big as it is. The ODI aims to investigate and improve the ecosystem surrounding these discovery services, with a goal of broader participation of content providers and increased transparency to libraries. The ODI working group was formed in late 2011 and held its first meeting in January 2012. This fall, the ODI dispatched a survey of librarians, content providers, and discovery service providers to learn more about the current state of satisfaction with these new research tools and to measure the value of various requirements in cross-sector practice. The survey addressed current levels of scholarly metadata delivery / indexing, technical successes / opportunities in these data exchanges, and potential benefits of greater development / distribution of discovery tool usage data. A request to participate in the survey was sent to this mailing list. Many thanks for your input if you participated! The report from this survey is now available via the NISO ODI page at http://www.niso.org/workrooms/odi/ - please note that the full set of recommendations from the ODI Working Group is still underway and will be available in draft form for comment a few months from now. Dear all,Punjab University has advertised 8 posts of Deputy Librarian and 26 posts of Assistant Librarians. But, what is the fate of Libraries and Librarians in the universities in Kerala? All universities in Kerala are running without University Librarians in post to manage the library system with long term strategic plans. UGC Scheme is not properly implemented, though induction to the scheme is given. Direct recruitment to the UGC posts insists, it is not implemented by protecting the existing incumbents in the Non-UGC cadre. So, what is the net result? Lack of leadership, lagging to develop union catalogues, digital libraries, institutional repositories etc., many court cases generated/induced by the system itself, lack of unity and cooperation among professionals, dissatisfied and demotivated library professionals with high qualifications (mostly with PG+MLISc+NET+MPhil+Publications) and so on. What Makes a Library a Library? by Kyle Chayka The latest controversy striking the tumultuous world of libraries (a very shocking place) is the announcement of a bookless library to open this fall in San Antonio, Texas. The new space will look and function more like an Apple store than what we would traditionally think of as a library, but how much does that matter when it comes to providing public access to information? The San Antonio library, called BiblioTech, will be a long, open space with a sloping front desk on one side and rows of computer terminals on long tables in the center. A smaller counter will hold a line of smartphones, while the opposite side of the library will host a reading lounge. There will be very few shelves. It’s not that the BiblioTech doesn’t have books; its books just come in a different form. The BiblioTech calls to mind the problem currently facing the New York Public Library’s main branch — as useful as technology is, library customers (and the public at large) still love their books. Critics complain that the NYPL’s plan to remove many of the books from its central location into a storage depot in New Jersey to make room for more computer terminals and a cafe is disrespectful to its heritage and turns it into “a glorified Starbucks,” according to the New York Times. Yet libraries have already been trending more toward media centers than manuscript repositories. It only takes one glance at Rem Koolhaas’s Seattle Central Library, a crystalline glass structure, to realize that you’re looking at something different than a normal institution. The library features large, open reading spaces and over 400 public computer terminals. If it’s more like a Starbucks, so what? It ultimately serves its function as a public resource. Aaron Swartz, was online activist and a key proponent of the movement against the US Congress' infamous Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). He was also involved in copyright issues and Internet freedom. Aarnon was propagating open access across the globe. Aarnon was facing legal charges for downloading 4 million articles from JSTOR which he intended to make available for free online. Though JSTOR dropped the legal charges against him, the Federal Government, US was up in the arms with him. Aaron wrote RSS Specification when he was just 14. PRESS RELEASE: 7th November 2012 Simon Inger and Tracy Gardner publish results of largest ever study into How Readers Discover Content in Scholarly Journals The report, which is the culmination of a 6-month research project and has the backing of leading publishers within STM, Humanities and Social Science, compares the changing reader behaviour between 2005 and 2012 and as a result looks at the impact on publisher and library web site design and function. Simon Inger and Tracy Gardner announced today the publication of a detailed report into discoverability of online content. Simon Inger, commenting on the reasoning behind the research said "There have been many studies using web logs that calculate where users of scholarly resources were referred from, but this approach doesn't indicate where those users started their research, merely the details of the last "hop" before hitting a content website. Discovery of academic content is complex with a plethora of discovery resources to choose from and many different routes to take. In order to expose content to the maximum number of potential readers, publishers and libraries need to understand these different routes and that is where this report can help them". This report is the output of a large-scale survey focussing on journal content discovery conducted during May, June and July of 2012. Over 19,000 responses were received from all over the world from readers in many different sectors, job roles and subject areas. The research repeats two earlier studies performed in 2005 by Scholarly Information Strategies (for whom the authors were consultants) and in 2008 by the authors. The shifts in reader preferences over time provide a valuable insight into reader navigation, the features that readers find useful in publisher web sites, and the role and effectiveness of library technologies. The 2012 survey was also updated to include questions about search engine preference and app use. Given such a large number of responses were received, this report goes much further than the previous two and is able to provide an insight into how readers in different sectors, regions, subject areas, and job roles behave. So, for example, answers to all the following questions can be found in the report: * In which subject areas, regions, job roles and sectors do readers make the most use of aggregated databases when searching for online articles? * Is Baidu, Google or Google Scholar the most popular search engine amongst students in China? * Which features do students, lecturers and academic researchers find most useful on Publisher web sites? * Which sectors make the most use of journal homepages and ToC Alerts? Tracy Gardner said "This report informs publishers, libraries, intermediaries and academics which resources the world's consumers prefer to use to discover scholarly content. It's an invaluable piece of research and we would like to wholeheartedly thank those organisations who supported us". The survey was supported by BMJ Group, CABI, Cambridge University Press, IOP Publishing, Nature Publishing Group, Palgrave Macmillan, Publishing Technology, RSC Publishing and SAGE. Knowledge Resource Division, CSIR-SERC Nestled amidst the greenery in the campus, is the Knowledge Resource Division (KRD) set up on modern lines. Providing invaluable support to researchers, its collection has grown to cover all aspects of structural engineering and its related sciences. KRD, CSIR-SERC is fully automated using modern technologies such as barcode, RFID, and provides several web-based services such as OPAC, auto alert, content alert, institutional repository etc. KRD, CSIR-SERC has recently upgraded its storage and security capacities by installing storage mobile compactors and surveillance system. About the Conference Reaching Out to Users through Technology (ROUTE-2013) - Enhancing Innovative Library Services in Open Environment aims to promote the understanding and use of information and communication technologies in libraries and institutions promoting library services to ensure equitable access to information and learning opportunities to every citizen. Digital libraries and deep web offer a vast spectrum of information. Large scale and access-free digital libraries, as well as social networks and tools constitute challenges in terms of accessibility, trust, privacy, and user satisfaction. The current questions concern the trade-off, where our actions must focus, and how to increase the accessibility. ROUTE-2013 looks to the future as our presenters embrace technological change in their workplaces and institutions, seeking ways to mobilize service delivery and granting service providers the skills and power to stay ahead of a connected and socialized client base. ROUTE-2013 aims to provide a mix of sessions highlighting technologies affecting user interaction and creation of new and better ways to manage library resources. At ROUTE-2013, information professionals have the valuable opportunity to share insights that address global technological challenges affecting our local communities. The abstracts will be reviewed by the technical committee, and the authors will be intimated of the acceptance along with the guidelines for preparation of the full-text.
