Sad News-Demise of Prof MA Gopinath

Dear Professionals, The demise of Prof. M.A. Gopinath has created big vacuum for the LIS profession and also LIS Teaching community in the country. His publications especially the edited DRTC annual seminar volumes have formed part of LIS syllabus. He started wing with with Dr.SRR at the age of 16. He has helped number of students not just in LIS academic and research activities, but even as a personal friend of many. I owe him for completing my DRTC Course, else I would have discontinued it due to some reason. He was simple and lovable person, but very serious in his work. He tried his level best to bring out 7th edition of Colon Classification. Classification research was almost synonymous with his name. He would talk on any subject on the earth hours together. We never forget his face becoming red some time due to some disorder in DRTC, especially our hostel mess in Malleshwaram. I We miss him very much. May his soul rest in peace. The passwords which are saved in the web browser could be retrieved by another person who is using the same computer, This problem arrives when we are selling the computer or when we are sending it for service. The passwords stored in mozila could be viewed by going to mozilla ↓ Options ↓ Security ↓ Saved password ↓ Show password This could be avoid by 1. Setting a master password for Mozilla security ( need password for viewing and saving the password of a particular website) 2. use private browsing in firefox 3. Removing the passwords by following the above mentioned steps ( there is option for removing password either all / particular item) 4. Dr M.A.Gopinath of D R T C -Sudden Demise

Dear Collegues, I am extremely sorry to inform the demise of Dr M.A.Gopinath who needs no introduction to Indian LIS professionals. Concurrent with the establishment of DRTC, Mr Gopinath joined Dr S. R. Ranganathan as his Research Assistant, graduated from DRTC in early 70s, served as a faculty,moved to North Carolina University as a visiting professor ,and back in Bangalore spent rest of his life. My association with Dr Gopinath dates back to 1966 when I joined DRTC as a student and later working with him closely as the Joint Secretary of Mysore Library Association (now Karnataka State Library Association). Dr Gopinath will be always remembered along with Dr SR Ranganthan as the co-author of "Prolegomena to library classification". May his soul rest in peace. Deva B. Carlos Fernandes, curator of the hi-tech Krishnadas Shama Central Library, said that thieves impersonated as maintenance technicians, unscrewed all the smoke detectors and escaped. Police Sub-Inspector Anant Gaonkar, who is investigating the complaint, said the value of the smoke detectors is pegged at Rs.7 lakh. "All the smoke detectors from the library's five floors have been stripped and robbed," the official said. Whether you’ve just attended ALA Midwinter or are gearing up for Computers in Libraries, here’s a post full of tips that will hopefully help as you’re preparing yor talks. It’s great to present statistics and evidence in your presentation, but you don’t want to hit people over the head with numbers…people’s eyes will glaze over, take it from me (I used to do just that!). Make it personal by sharing something that they can relate to while showing them a slide of impressive stats. This is great to do at the beginning of a presentation because then people will feel that they know something about you as an individual, not just an anonymous speaker. #2 Don’t start with history There are few things more boring than someone launching into a 15-minute discussion of how something got started. Get to the meat of it right away. People want to know how the story ends, what the benefits are, why they should be sitting through your talk. You’ll want to capture people’s attention right off the bat with a promise of what they’ll learn and how it can help them. #3 Remember that people can read on their own Many conference attendees believe that there is a special place in hell reserved for people who read their slides aloud to the audience. Hoepfully this isn’t true because I used to do this when I first started presenting! So, I think that this one could be tempered a bit. While you don’t want to read each of your bullet points on a slide verbatim, you’ll still want to address them and talk around them so a good practice is to add more talking points to your notes, and shorten what’s on your slides. #4 Provide an agenda Give people an agenda at the beginning of your talk. Let them know what you’ll be covering so they can decide whether or not they want to stay for the duration. This also lets people follow along because they are expecting certain sections and topics. An agenda gives the audience and idea of what they’ll learn and what the order and timing will be of your talk – people don’t want to sit through an “endless” presentation, let them know at the beginning that yours has structure. #5 Practice!!!! Really there’s no substitute for knowing your presentation backwards and forwards. I practice my presentations until I can speak to each slide without any speaker notes. After that I’ll practice my introduction until I know it by heart and can say it in my sleep. Why? Because almost everyone gets nervous when speaking in public, at least for the first few minutes, and I’m no exception. But if you can introduce yourself and your topic on auto-pilot even when nervous, you’ll have passed the biggest hurdle and the rest is easy. #6 You don’t have to be like Steve Jobs Steve Jobs was an incredibly dynamic and charismatic speaker. He was one of the experts that people watched for benchmarking standards on presenting. He could somehow both entertain and instruct by engaging his audience throughout the duration of his presentations. But I think that it’s important to keep in mind that you don’t have to aim to be Steve Jobs in every presentation – that’s a lot of pressure! For most presentations, your foremost objective will be to deliver a message, not to entertain. It’s wonderful if you can manage to do both, and of course you don’t want to bore the audience, but remember, as an expert speaker on a topic it’s your job to inform people, to teach them something they don’t know. Most people don’t go to conferences looking for entertainment – there are better places they can go for that – they go hoping to learn something. If the content of your presentation has attendees walking out of your session excited about learning something new, then you’ve succeeded. #7 Stick to your time limit If you’re on a panel with 2 other professionals and you’ve each got 15 minutes of a 45-minute session, it’s imperative that you stick to your time limit. If you don’t, you’re taking away time from another speaker, as well as the audience members who have planned for a certain amount of time to be at your session. Running over time also pretty much eliminates Q & A time for the audience. Although it seems simple enough, I’ve seen this happen a hundred times, and I’ve had it happen to me. This one just comes down to practicing with a timer, which comes standard on any phone at this point, to make sure that your talk is consistent with the amount of time you’ve been allotted. #8 Get a book on professional slide design If you want to make a great impression with your slideshow, invest in a book on slide design (or borrow one from a library!) There are a lot of great books out there which will go beyond the simple tips like to; forgo the clip art and instead use/purchase quality or stock images, skip the animations and transitions altogether, and keep your fonts legible and easy to read for all viewers. They’ll discuss effective placement of text and images, color palettes, and design structure. If you walk in to your presentation with a smile, even if you’re nervous, people will just think that you are a generally friendly person and that you’re happy to be there. *Kerala State Central Library, Thiruvananthapuram website gets digital archives link* There is an antique work on the shelves of the State Central Library to which access is restricted. Its date of publication reads 1569. It is called the ‘Righte Noble and Pleasant History of the Successors of Alexander Surnamed the Great,’ and now anyone with an Internet connection can explore the contents of the book, all 338 pages of it, by visiting the ‘archives’ section of the library’s website. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Tuesday inaugurated this landmark achievement of the library - inclusion of the digital archive of rare books and government gazettes to its official website. The foundation stone of the new reference block was laid at the function. The block will be built in consonance with the Victorian style architecture of the library building. The need for an additional building was raised by library officials owing to the lack of space to accommodate new books. Hurdles regarding allotment of land for its construction have been overcome, and the Public Works Department has proposed an estimate of Rs.3 crore for the three-floor ‘Heritage Model Reference Block.’ The building little hints that the library has embraced modern technology, even achieving the distinction of being the one State library in the country to be fully computerised. Online book reservation and renewal, Internet access for members, self check-in and check-out, and securing of books using RFID tags have led to the development of the library over the past few decades. “This library has brought great pride to the State and the government will offer all support it requires,” Mr. Chandy said. Dismissing claims that the Internet and the visual media had displaced the reading habit, he said the library had, instead, utilised such media to ensure the safety and dissemination of its reading material. Mr. Chandy said he would look into the complaints of the employee association regarding staff shortage. Earlier, only library members could access the digital archive via its local network. Now, over 5 lakh pages of rare books and Travancore/Travancore-Cochin/Kerala gazettes dating back to 1904 have flooded into the public domain. Librarian P. Dear All, We deeply mourn the sadful demise of one of our esteemed and beloved faculty Prof. Vyuptakesh Sharan. Prof Vyuptakesh Sharan is currently professor at the Chandragupt Institute of Management Patna. Prior to this assignment, he was at Global Business Operations Postgraduate Programme, Sri Ram College of Commerce, University of Delhi, Delhi. Before this, Dr Sharan was a UGC Visiting Professor at the Department of Commerce, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. Prior to his Delhi assignments he was Professor and Dean, Faculty of Commerce, Magadh University. Dr Sharan has also been associated with the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University as ICSSR Senior Fellow. Professor Sharan teaches international finance and international business. He has to his credit seven books and around sixty articles published in this area in India, Italy and the UK. He is on the editorial advisory board of Indian Journal of Commerce and has the privilege of chairing national-level seminars at various institutions in the country. The loss CIMP family had from his demise, will never be recovered. May his soul rest in peace. Dear All, The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Govt of India, has been offering 40 Vocational Courses in different sectors at Senior Secondary Level and 4 vocational courses at Secondary level. A student can choose to avail competency based skill learning along with general education in order to enhance the skills in the chosen field. The vocational education envisions imparting the procedural knowledge and skills to the students that will enable students to excel and emerge successful in real life situation of both work and life. It works towards imparting an education that is holistic, meaningful and skill oriented which instils among the youth a sense of usefulness and responsibility. Found this interesting book by Harvard's Berkmen Centre on "copyright for librarians" (yes... freely downloadable!!!). http://www.eifl.net/news/cfl-essential-handbook-launches. It largely deals with the US and EU positions, along with Berne, TRIPS etc... So there is no Indian law involved. evertheless, I thought it is well written and may useful.
