NAAC Gradings- Some Observations-UoM Distinction

Dear Professionals, I wish to share my observations about NAAC Gradings updated as on 5th Jan 2013. University of Mysore (UoM) has got *'A' Grade (Very Good) with 3.47 CGPA* (Cumulative Grade Point Average) Score. * General:* Out of 101 Universities re-assessed and re-accredited as on 5 Jan 2013 - 35 have been assessed first time - 64 have been accredited 2nd time - Only two have been accredited third time (UoM and Pondichery Univ) - 69 Universities assessed and accredited earlier, but their validity is lapsed. *UoM Distinction:* 1. Among 10 Universities re-assessed and re-accredited by NAAC in Karnataka, * * 4 universities got 'A'* *Grade* with UoM getting the First Ranks *with 3.47 CGPA rating followed by KLE Society (3.16), Bangalore (3.12), Karnatak (3.02), Kannada, Hampi (3.02), Nitte, Mangalore (2.87), Gulburga (2.86), Kuvempu (2.81), Tumkur (2.26) and Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana (2.15). 2. Among 101 Universities re-assessed and re-accredited by NAAC in the country: - 53 Universities got 'A' Grade and rest had to be satisfied with 'B' grade with highest Score of 3.91 and Lowest 2.05 - Among State Universities in the country* UoM shares 4th Rank *with Punjab University, top ones being Andhra (3.65), Jadhavpur (3.61) and Gurunanak Dev (3.5). - Among all Indian Universities re-assessed and re-accredited by NAAC including Central, Deemed, Private and State Universities * UoM shares 12th Rank *with Punjab Univ, top ones being JNU (3.91), Univ of Hyderabad (3.89), TISS, Mumbai (3.88),BITS, Pilani (3.71), Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning (3.66), Andhra (3.65), IGIDR, Mumbai,(3.64), Jadhavpur (3.61), Sri Ramachandra, Chennai (3.52), SRM Inst.of S & T, TN (3.50) and Gurunanak Dev (3.50). - In the earlier assessments UoM's grades were A+ and 5 Stars as per the old scheme. * NAAC Committee About UoM Library: *The entire Peer Team along with most of the IQAC members visited all sections of the library for auditing and had encouraging discussion during half an hour presentation. *The NAAC.**committee complimented us profusely for upgrading it with quality state-of-the-art services as one of the best university library in the country.* It is worthwhile to mention here that few months back UGC Academic Staff College at UoM got 5th Rank among 66 ASCs assessed by NAAC. Even during this assessment UoM library played a vital role in getting this distinction. The credit of this distinction goes mainly to Prof. V.G.Talawar, a LIS Professional and ex-VC of UoM and his dedicated select team. * Some Questions? Some ifs and buts: - *NAAC accreditation is not mandatory for colleges and universities* *- Out of about 600 universities in the country only 101 have gone for assessment* - *But we should note that in many project proposals NAAC Gradings get credit. - Even in case of colleges same trend is observed. - Why not NAAC Assessment be made mandatory. - There is need to educate entire staff of colleges and universities in this matter as even the maintenance of toilets is counted for assessment. * *NAAC has brought many publications including Promotional Material, Manuals, Guidelines, Analysis of Accreditation Reports, Best Practices, Annual Reports, News Letter, etc useful for Universities and Colleges undergoing accreditation. They are available in NAAC Website (http://www.naac.gov.in) *Below is the List of 101 Indian Universities re-assessed and re-accredited by NAAC arranged in the decreasing order of CGPA Score. Library of Congress works to save priceless recordings

(CBS News) CULPEPER, Va. -- Cameras and microphones are virtually everywhere these days, and it seems just about everything that happens is preserved forever on the internet. Of course, it wasn't always that way. The Library of Congress has just reported that 80 percent of motion pictures filmed before 1930 -- and countless audio recordings from that era -- are gone. But the library has a plan to stop this bleeding of priceless history. A 1936 Louis Armstrong recording is an artifact nearly lost to time. It's a nickel-plated disc widely used to record sound in the first half of the 20th century. "It's the equivalent to an original camera negative for a motion picture," says Patrick Loughney, who is leading the effort to save these cultural relics for the Library of Congress. "What goes on here is the archaeology of American popular audio-visual history," Loughney says. When you think of the Library of Congress, you think of old documents and typewriter-smudged papers. Not here. "It's quite remarkable that the library, very early on, got into the acquisition of sound recordings and then radio programs," Loughney says. "They were considered a cultural record." Cylinders invented by Thomas Edison in the 1800s were recently donated by a private collector. They are the first known devices to record sound. "It was literally beeswax, so it could melt if you heated it up too high or dropped it would break," says Loughney. One recording, now digitally restored, is an 1896 campaign song for William McKinley. Watch: Library of Congress sports interviews go beyond wins and losses, below. The library has 90 miles of shelves at its 45-acre conservation campus in Culpeper, Va. Here, specialists are preserving more than a million motion pictures, including an 1894 film called "Annabel Butterfly." It's one of the oldest known films ever restored -- each frame was originally colored by hand. Technicians have digitized thousands of TV shows, including the only appearance of The Doors on "The Ed Sullivan Show." They've even restored color to a 1975 blues documentary. "There is a growing amnesia about America past," Loughney says. "Our job is to try and bolster that American memory, try to save it for future generations who might find value in what we're preserving." Comedians are always writing books about themselves, or about comedy history, or about writing, or just fun stuff called "fiction." And a lot of it is worth reading. Because we are here to help, we made for you a list of some of the best comedy books — broken down into memoirs, humor, history, and fiction — that would be right at home on any comedy lover's shelf (or on your "E-reader"). Memoirs Bossypants by Tina Fey Tina Fey chronicles her life from nerd-dom to motherhood and everything in between, including her work on Second City, SNL, 30 Rock, and more. Zombie Spaceship Wasteland by Patton Oswalt Oswalt mixes stories of his formative years as a D&D-playing nerd with other vignettes including poems, movie reviews, greeting cards. Born Standing Up by Steve Martin Steve Martin's 2007 biography (not an autobiography, Martin said, "because I am writing about someone I used to know") tracks his life, from Disneyland to Knott's Berry Farm to Hollywood, focusing on the development of his wit and humor. A Bad Idea I'm About to Do: True Tales of Seriously Poor Judgment and Stunningly Awkward Adventure by Chris Gethard Comic, actor, writer, and Chris Gethard Show creator Chris Gethard tells of all his life's moments that have been beyond awkward, like more awkward than yours when you say things are awkward. Kasher in the Rye: The True Tale of a White Boy from Oakland Who Became a Drug Addict, Criminal, Mental Patient, and Then Turned 16 by Moshe Kasher LA stand-up comedian Moshe Kasher relates his story, a complicated one that you can probably get an idea of from this memoir's lengthy subtitle. Daddy's Boy: A Son's Shocking Account of Life with a Famous Father by Chris Elliott Famous father with a famous father Chris Elliott writes about life as the youngest son of Bob Elliott of comedy duo Bob and Ray. The memoir has a unique format — Chris and his dad switch off chapters, Bob providing a rebuttal for every story Chris shares. A Liar's Autobiography by Graham Chapman The Monty Python actor's unique memoir, originally published in 1980, was released as a 3D animated movie in 2012. Unusual for an autobiography, the book is credited to five authors: Chapman, his partner David Sherlock, Alex Martin, Douglas Adams, and David A. Yallop. Eric Idle provides an afterword. You're Lucky You're Funny: How Life Becomes a Sitcom by Phil Rosenthal Creator and executive producer of Everybody Loves Raymond tracks his life from growing up in the Bronx, trying his hand at acting in New York City, and working on countless now-forgotten sitcoms before landing on the project that made his career. You're Not Doing it Right: Tales of Marriage, Sex, Death, and Other Humiliations by Michael Ian Black Michael Ian Black's memoir goes the way of a self-deprecating look at his experience with marriage and parenthood. Happy Accidents by Jane Lynch Happy Accidents combines comic memoir with inspirational narrative as Jane Lynch tracks her career from anxiety-ridden teen to happily married television star. Obama split on location of presidential library

By: CNN Wire WASHINGTON - He holds a strong association with both places - Hawaii is his birthplace and winter retreat, but Chicago is his adopted home and where his children were born. President Barack Obama said he's still not sure which location would be the home of his presidential library. "Honolulu is my birthplace," Obama said on an interview with Honolulu station KITV. "It's the place where I grew up and I've got so many friends and fond memories and it helped to shaped me. I'd like to find a way after my presidency that connection remains, but I live in Chicago now and that's where I grew up professionally." "It is a tough choice, but it's not one that I've made yet," Obama said. Reports in the last year have indicated that Obama's team is looking at space for a presidential library in Chicago, including near the University of Chicago where he taught before entering politics. Universities have housed presidential libraries in the past, including the George W. Bush Presidential Center at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and the George H.W. Bush Presidential Museum and Library on the campus of Texas A&M in College Station. But the University of Hawaii has also made no secret of their desire to house Obama's presidential library, and the Aloha State's legislature passed a resolution in 2010 calling on Obama to choose his birthplace for the institution. No matter where the library lands, it will likely cost north of $100 million, based on the whopping costs of past presidents' libraries. The money comes from private donations. The libraries have the potential to become major tourist draws, particularly for an historic presidency like Obama's. Step in, code-refactoring - an often neglected coding practice which strives to make application code reader friendly. There are a variety of reasons why we must revisit the code we’ve written. Most times it to add some functionality. Sometimes it is on account of new knowledge acquired, a blog we’d read, the platform was enhanced by the vendor or of course, there’s been a problem! On such occasions, when we find myself groping through the code, iterating up and down the code, glancing through the components to piece together the functionality the code is automating, I intuitively understand that this code could use some correction. This correction is refactoring. That is, at any time the code we work on or review has us thrashing about to make things intelligible, we must consider making corrections so that we understand the code easier than before. Several techniques are available to help us create and maintain clean code. This presentation discusses some of the available techniques.
