GOOGLE SEARCH MAKING PEOPLE MORE FORGETFUL: STUDY The Internet is fast eroding people's memories of world-changing events in history, making them more forgetful as they increasingly bank upon Google to provide the information, a new UK study has found. The study of 2,000 adults found less-than-half of people surveyed could name the year when Princess Diana died, even though it happened as recently as 1997. Many respondents did not even know the year in which the terror attacks on the World Trade Center took place while many others were clueless about when the Berlin Wall fell, the 'Metro' reported. The important dates of world-changing events in history are fast disappearing from the memories of the Internet generation, researchers said. Majority of the adults, who took part in the survey, said that they made less of an effort to remember things "because we can look them up" on the Internet. "The Internet could be changing the traditional way we remember and process things - certainly compared to older generations," spokesman for Grant's Whisky, which commissioned the survey, said. The most common date people remembered was the Battle of Hastings, while the dates of the two world wars and England's World Cup win were also ingrained in their memory. Dear Friends, Here are the steps to tune Koha to search Indian languages precisely. I tried these steps on Koha 3.12.x installation based on Debian packages. I borrowed these steps from Koustubha Kale posting ( http://tinyurl.com/kza7l84) in Koha Discussion forum. I made slight changes in the instructions. Lets start tuning... TRIBUTES TO PROFESSOR LANCASTER

Professor Lancaster's demise is indeed a shocking and saddening news for me. His visit to Trivandrum more than two decades ago in response to my invitation and the few days he had spent as a guest of the then RRL(CSIR) Trivandrum is unforgettable. I had the privilege of organizing three programmes of Prof. Lancaster during his visit : CSIR Golden Jubilee Lecture on Scientific Productivity at RRLT, another lecture on a related topic in the University of Kerala and a Television Programme by DoorDarshan Kendra (the then existing only electronic media channel in the city). The two lectures were attended by packed audience in the respective halls. The DD programme was a discussion associating Dr. AD Damodaran, the then Director of RRLT and Mr. S. Parthasarathy, the then British Council Librarian, Trivandrum. When he visited my Library, we had informal discussions on quite a few issues related to LIS - blended with the trends, the pragmatism and the philosophy. Some of his replies/observations refreshingly echo still in my thoughts..... " Library is the last place I like to visit these days" " Well, the Papperless Society has in reality, its own constraints to be 100% paperless " " The smell of a new book, of its paper, admittedly brings in the nostalgic feeling of the print world " When I was a student of LIS, while familiarizing with Prof. Lancaster's works and contributions on Information Retrieval Systems, Paperless Information Systems, Indexing and Abstracting, Measurement and Evaluation, etc., I was delightfully excited and was gazing at him as a child gazing at a glittering star, several light years afar ! Years after, in the early 1990s, when he visited Trivandrum as my guest (accompanied by his Italian wife), it was really 'a dream come true' effect in my life ! I thankfully remember Prof. MA Gopinath, who telephonically informed me from Bangalore about Prof. Lancaster's India visit....in his inimitable words : " Sadasivan ! A BIG FISH is here around...Want to catch him? Act swiftly " The result : 'THE BIG FISH' in Trivandrum during the very next week ! Prof. Lancaster was a visionary scholar, whose insight triggered a host of novel ideas in formulating new theories and models with the strong back up of empirical studies and scientific inferences. His simplicity and human approach endeared him to his friends and the public. I request our professional fraternity to join me for respectfully paying homage to the departed ! Ghost writing is taking on an altogether different meaning in a mysterious case of alleged scientific fraud. The authors of a paper published in July (A. Vezyraki et al. Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. http://doi.org/nxb; 2013), which reported significant findings in obesity research, seem to be phantoms. They are not only unknown at the institution listed on the paper, but no trace of them as researchers can be found. The paper, published in the Elsevier journal Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications (BBRC), is not the kind of prank that journals have encountered before, in which hoaxsters have submitted dummy papers to highlight weaknesses in the peer-review process. The paper's reported findings - that overexpression of two novel proteins in fat cells leads to improvements in metabolic processes related to diabetes and obesity in mice - are, in fact, true. Dear Friends, The 15th edition of ICADL 2013 is coming to Bangalore and will be held in Bangalore during December 9-11 2013. The registration for the conference is already open and do ensure that you avail the 'Ahead of Time' registration option, which is closing by September 30, 2013 (http://www.isim.ac.in/icadl2013/Registration.html) Would you like to showcase your DL, attend the conference, and win some exciting prizes too--without paying the registration fee? ICADL 2013 will not be just another run-of-the-mill DL conference! Apart from plenary talks and presentations of accepted papers, several special events are lined up during the conference. Once such event is showcasing of Indian Digital Library Initiatives (IDLI). We invite short (2 page) proposals from those of you who have implemented digital libraries in your own organisations for IDLI. We will select up to 10 proposals for showcasing them at the ICADL 2013. The criteria for selection would include (but not limited to): 1. The importance of collaboration, group work and communication in teaching and learning are widely recognised and the central role of the library as a repository of facts and information is changing. While it is still important to have this kind of resource, it has proven to be a diminishing draw in terms of library traffic. The notion of transforming libraries into social and cultural spaces is an expansive role for the future library not only serving as an information resource, but much more, with the exact mission and goals evolving and changing over time. A culture-based library is one that taps into the spirit of the community, assessing priorities and providing resources to support the things deemed most important. Libraries are in a unique position to experiment with creative spaces so the future role of the library can define itself. Since the role of the library 20 years from now is still a mystery, libraries need to put their heads together to scratch the surface of many more changes to come and determine what ideas are drawing attention and getting traction. The conference aims to address the main issues of concern within the framework of this transformation. Program Structure : The conference program will include plenary sessions, invited and contributed papers, poster sessions, product presentations, panel discussions and an exhibition. A series of parallel sessions will be held offering delegates a wide range of in depth presentations by leading national and international experts. Submission of Papers : Unpublished research papers on different themes of the conference are solicited by December 15, 2013. He revolutionized the field of Library Science particularly “Indexing & Information retrieval”. He advocated the concept of “Controlled vocabulary” in information. His books “Online Information retrieval”, “Information retrieval systems” were sought after by MLIS students during 1980’s and 1990s. The second book has also bagged the best book of the year in USA. I attended three day evening lectures delivered by Prof.F.W.Lancaster at Institute of Information Studies, Bangalore (Sponsored by Sarada Endowment for Library Science). May his soul rest in peace. A man of strong discipline and principles, he immensely contributed to the LIS profession. He was Head of Documentation Division in J.N.U., New Delhi. The computerisation of Panjab University Library had undergone during his tenure as University Librarian.
