Can association support to LIS community in automation?

Dear All, I am just thinking about the contributions of LIS associations for advancement of technical services in library and information science field and hardly found much. Therefore i suggest one best and effective way for the same as follows: Since Koha are very popular now a days in India and abroad also but due to some lacking features in Indian context many could not able to use its best features and their is some financial concerns also for the libraries. So is it not possible for associations to see the lacking features in Koha as per Indian scenario and sponsor some good Koha vender to make some patches/plugin and make it public. For example at present Koha is not able to handle incremental fine but it is badly needed by many libraries so they can sponsor/fund some vender to make one plugin and share it to public through association website or other means. It will have better direct effect and contribution from LIS associations for the whole world as well as the concern association will also benefit a lot in my view. The associations may also get the sponsorship for the same from lot vender/publishers etc. Kindly give your feedback. An appeal before koha users: Majority of libraries use printed gate registers.Why cant we switch to an automated one?. Mr.Vimal Kumar of Mahatma Gandhi University Library,Kerala has suggested this in bugzilla in 2013.Read the bugzilla post - http://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=10105 Somebody has to write the script for that.It is assigned as an add-on bug in bugzilla. Everytime we are "consumers" of free features,can we go for "paid consumers" option for integrating the gate register feature in Koha. Do we really deserve to be known as Information Manager/Librarian in Digital Era?

Dr. S.R.Ranganathan, also known as a ‘Father of Library Science in India’ propounded the five laws of library science in 1928 which was later published in the year 1931 in the form of Book. The law says: 1. Books are for use 2. Every reader his/her book 3. Every book its reader 4. Save the time of the reader 5. The library is a growing organism Every law has its implications and as per each implication, the ‘SERVICE’ is key point for any kind of library. As per the first law ‘Books are for use’, the books available in the library are for use. In another way if we analyze then it means that books in libraries should not be kept away from the user and it has to be utilized. Then only the first law will be satisfied. There are also some related issues with the term USE such as physical location of the library, library timings, circulation policy, furniture and qualified staff. As per the second law ‘Every reader his/her book’ means ‘Books for All’. The meaning says that every reader should get the books required. As per the third law, ‘Every book its reader’, it mainly focuses on DOCUMENTS which says that each document in the library has its own reader. Now, it is up-to libraries to find out the methods to attract the readers so that each documents finds it reader. The most useful method was suggested the ‘Open Shelving’ where the readers will be free from any restrictions in order to reach any particular document. As per the fourth law ‘Save the time of the reader’, the library and its staff is mainly responsible for the recognition of excellence of library by meeting the needs of library users efficiently. In other way we can say that the library users should get their books/information quickly as per their demand. It means the staff should have strong skills for reference, technical services and also easy circulation of documents. As per the fifth law ‘The library is a growing organism’, the library should be continually changing place for growth of qualified staff, physical size and collection of library and uses of resources effectively. Due to the advent of technology the scenario of libraries have changed and many new changes have taken places in the libraries everywhere. Now, we are equipped with high end technological tools with capability to provide high end services and highly qualified staff with infrastructure. In other words, over the period of time, we have slowly shifted to digital world. But, still question remains in the mind that “Do we really deserve to be known as Information Manager/Librarian?” Are we really providing the services to our library users as per their expectations? LIS Courses in India : An Education or Entertainment...?

Before saying about the topic i taken first of all i would like to devotedly pass on my good wishes to MyDlis and Milan for their successful prevail over the programme meet & greet and as well as the international conference on Information Unbounded: the past, the present, and the future of Information Sciences. These three days programme has given me an immense pleasure to get comprehensive dulcet memories by mingling with elite professionals and the alumni of DLIS. So, I am heart fully indebted to the organizer for having all of us gathered under a single umbrella. In this forum, I would like to share some of the great reminiscences i could get in the conference. This conference had some panel discussions which was very informative and instructive to a young professional like me to improve our profession. Polemics in the discussions were very much interesting and pleasing for me but amongst the topics discussed by panelists INDENTITY CRISIS tempted me a lot. So, uncontrolling myself i have decided to talk quite a lot about it on this forum. *IDENTITY CRISIS* when this theme/topic raised most of the participants have become emotional and started talking that all librarians are facing this issue in the society and we are not being respected like other professionals such as doctor and engineer are respected and some said that we are not notable in the world. For this talk one of the panelists has replied that the reason behind this identity crisis is the number of library professionals are produced more than what is required and another panelist suggested that to overcome this issue the number of students should be reduced in BLIS/MLISc. Now firstly my polemic over their opinions, suggestions and as well as the burning topic identity crisis in library professional is “our course Library And Information Science is not the STANDARDIZED one”. Secondly students are not the genuine aspirants of being librarian they join LIS courses just because either they couldn’t get seat in their desired subject (i. e. MSc/MBA/MA) which they have applied to or by influence of their parents/guardians or they may join it thinking that taking degree in LIS course is much easier than other subjects. Because of these kinds of occurrences our course is going to be an ill fated one and unfortunately poor qualitative librarians are produced by all dept of LIS in India. What I didn’t like most is one of the participant suddenly stood up and made a proclamation that LIBRARIANS ARE KING MAKERS it seemed to be very funny for me because just by providing users a books on engineering and science we are not creating any engineers or doctors in the society and one thing I would like to make very much clear to that participant that the same book can be read by many user some may get first rank , some may just pass, some may be failed and go unemployed so librarians are not creating/responsible for unemployment in the society. Hence librarians shouldn’t be compared with other professionals like doctor and engineer because their line of study is completely different and complex than LIS degree. See if anybody wants to become a doctor or engineer he must possess science knowledge in 12th standard/ Pre University Course later they have to pass in CET then only they will get a seat to study BE/MBBS but in our subject that is LIBRARY & INFORMATION SCIENCE it is not like that, anybody can join and pass it easily without hard work and i also feel a student failed in English subject can pass this LIS in a first attempt that too in English medium with first class. From this I can infer that there are no standards or limitations to posses LIS degree. Just by doing 1 or 2 years course we become LIBRARIAN and compare ourselves with doctors and engineers. Dear professionals please don’t think I am underestimating our profession I am just not happy with the mode of our course. My intention is just to tell that only the real aspirants has to become librarian we shouldn’t entertain everyone to become librarian just by opening 1 year or 2 years courses. If one wants to become librarian he must possess LIS knowledge in 12th standard itself followed by bachelor degree in LIS and Masters in LIS. Method of LIS Course has to be meliorated in this way. Universities are there to form a student’s future but no University is bothered about what kind of students they are producing. Especially distance education Universities are spoiling student’s career. They are creating a mess in the society. I believe students are not becoming educated but they are just going qualified unemployed it brought me confusion that whether the “Universities are really educating or entertaining the students”. For this I beseech each and every one of our professors, leaders, presidents, secretaries of all Associations, Networks and all LIS Departments dare to come forward and reform our course otherwise we will have to face a biggest problem in future. If I have said anything incorrectly I kindly request all professionals to guide me and make me a sensible professional. Your comments, critics and suggestions are wholeheartedly welcome. Karnataka State Library Association (KALA) joined with with Mysore Librarians and Information Scientists Association (MyLISA) and Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) to celebrate the yoga day by organizing a lecture on ‘Yoga and Work-life balance’ by Dr. H.L. Chandrashekar, Associate Professor, Department of Philosophy, University of Mysore, Mysuru. 'Yoga helps in controlling the mind and its turbulence' said Dr. Chandrashekar. Quoting from Adi Shankaracharya’s Viveka-Cuda-Mani, he said Deer (Kuranga), elephant (Matanga), moth (Patanga), fish (Mina) and wasp (brmga) all die from their attachment to one of the five senses, sound etc., and so what about the man who is attached to all five! He said yoga helps to some extent to control the temptations from the senses. He said yoga is not just asanas (body postures) but is the goal of life for Indians which is self realization. Yoga is a natural trait for Indians, but unfortunately we have reached a stage where we had to import it from other countries. He commended the efforts of the Indian Government for promoting the principles of yoga to all humankind. Dr. C.P. BOOK DONATE-A-THON Pratham Books, an NGO dedicated to children's reading, is launching an online platform to connect donors and those who need books. Called "Donate-a-Book" platform, it is a crowd-funded initiative that reaches reading resources to children. According to a release by Pratham, it has selected a set of organisations who are working to build better literacy skills among children. It features campaigns by these organisations, thereby making it easier for donors to choose from them. Suzanne Singh, Chairperson of Pratham Books, said, "We came to realise that there are individuals who would love to help contribute to the mission, but are unaware of how to do so. This led to the idea of a crowd-funding initiative. Every rupee donated on this platform goes towards the books and ensuring they reach the children for whom they are meant." EDITORIAL: SHOULD LIBRARIAN OF CONGRESS BE TERM-LIMITED? The world's largest library needs a new leader. Librarian of Congress James Billington announced this month that he plans to step down from the post he has held for almost 28 years. Mr. Billington's decision reopens the door to the modern era for the Library of Congress. President Barack Obama should not just search for a successor; he should also invite a discussion on the suitable tenure and evaluation of the nation's chief librarian. The Library of Congress is more than a magnificent building full of books. Besides maintaining an unparalleled collection, the librarian oversees the national copyright office and provides research and analysis to Congress - all this in a time when production and reproduction of information, music and video is moving faster than ever. The next librarian will need to develop a system to make existing materials searchable online and to digitize material as it comes in. Traditionally, the post of librarian has gone to an eminent scholar. While an appreciation for the country's cultural history is essential, the library's needs demand technological savvy and managerial finesse as well as academic stature. Finding one individual with all these capabilities is admittedly a tall order. Whoever Mr. Obama picks - a seasoned librarian, a university president, a Silicon Valley executive - will need a strong supporting team. But even the installation of a first-rate leader and team will not be enough to ensure the library's continued success. An esteemed Russia scholar with a deep understanding of the importance of writing and music in American life, Mr. Billington, now 86, assumed his post with innovative ideas like the American Memory and THOMAS projects, which put some collections and legislative information online. But as time passed, the library fell behind, failing to hire a chief information officer or keep pace with essential digitization efforts. The United States has seen 44 presidents but only 13 librarians of Congress. Years of tradition - not the 1802 statute creating the position - have granted the post de-facto life tenure. It is time for a change. Tougher oversight and renewable terms based on performance would encourage librarians not to rest on their laurels and would help ensure that the quality of the librarian always matches the immense importance of the job. International Yoga day: As the world was twisting and bending and stretching on the International Yoga Day (21th June 2015), the century old University of Mysore, did not lag behind .Under the dynamic leadership of Prof. K. S. Rangappa, & the Director of the physical education Prof. C. Krishna, along with the University instructor Mr. Ravi joined the University Professor, research scholars and the other staff and children performeing different Aasanaas and pranayama. I was also one of them. The feeling was exhilarating and refreshing. I felt an inch taller and healthier. Our VC in his inaugural address said that he would encourage the University to offer certificate and diploma courses in yoga to check diseases like diabetes in a scientific way. The program started on the dot of 7 am at the university indoor gymnasium. Incidentally, our Priminister Modi has turned a world leader today by making 50 million people in 132 countries to participant in performing yoga. In a way he has demonstrated the soft power of India in the Aasanaas for a more healthier and peaceful world.
