Make agreements with publishers public

Friends: Non-disclosure agreements librarians and consortia managers sign with publishers are immoral. Especially when we are investing taxpayers' money. Every consortium in India should reveal how much they have spent so far on journal subscriptions - in great detail. Received from a friend. Hi all: The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) has released an Open Access Monitoring Report 2013-2015: http://www.snf.ch/SiteCollectionDocuments/Monitoringbericht_Open_Access_201… The OA status of 17'000 publications reported to be output of SNSF funded projects published between 2013 and 2014 an have been checked, and an OA share of at least 39% (or 56% if you also count freely papers on websites, but not repositories as green OA) was found. This validated OA ratio is much higher, than what authors have self declared in the grant administration system to be Open Access (20%). Also financial reports of grants have been checked for publications related costs. These costs have not been categorized separately in the grant administration system and therefore no specific data was available until now. The check revealed that the uptake of APCs is still quite moderate, despite the SNSF has started in 2013 to pay explictly APCs up to 3000 CHF during the grant lifetime. The check also revealed that hybrid OA articles were funded, although that’s not in line with the SNSF regulations. For the future a more rigorous control system will be established to prevent paying for hybrid OA. Further it was also noted, that a significant amount of costs were attributed to publication costs not related to Open Access, like overlength charges, color charges or author's contributions. These charges no longer appear to be appropriate and are likely to be covered on a much more restrictive basis in future. It was also announced that the SNSF together with swissuniversities (the association of all Swiss Universities) has commissioned a study „Financial flow analysis of scientific publishing in Switzerland“. The mandate was awarded to Cambridge Economic Policy Associates (CEPA), in collaboration with Professor John Houghton, Melbourne. The results are expected to be in by the end of the year and should lead to specific action. The tools and technologies that facilitate the discovery of diversified resources and access to the globally distributed resources for a wide range of users are of utmost importance for libraries of any type or size. These tools are gaining maturity and popularity rapidly across the world and discussed under the generic term resource discovery systems. This special issue of Annals of Library and Information Studies aims to deliberate issues pertaining to technologies, methodologies, products, metadata models, linking environments and user interfaces in the context of library based resource discovery systems. Facets: Original contributions are invited from researchers and practitioners including but not limited to the following facets - 1. Today DOAJ will remove approximately 3300 journals for failure to submit a valid reapplication before the communicated deadline; a deadline which was extended twice to allow more time for reapplications. Upcoming change in Koha ILS's version numbering schema

Dear all, Many among you here are active Koha users. While some of you may be aware that Koha's versioning number scheme is changing within the next few days, many are not yet aware of this change. From the 3.x versioning that we have used for the last 3+ years, we are changing over to a YY.MM style version (ala Ubuntu). The current stable release is 3.22.6 and the next stable release which is scheduled for release in a few days will be 16.05. The woman got a book issued in December 1948 and visited the library to return the book only in 2016. Guess how much fine she should have paid? Well, that is why fiction is always better than reality. As a kid, many of us have had one special book that makes us feel home no matter how many times we read it. Perhaps, A.W. Reed's "Myths and Legends of Maoriland" was that book for a lady who came to return this book to a library after 68 years. A 70-year-old woman visited the Epsom Community Library in Auckland, New Zealand and she came with a 'confession'. She had borrowed the book from the library when she was the patron of the library as a kid but then she moved out of Auckland and 'accidentally' took the book with her. After nearly 68 years, while was visiting her family in Auckland she thought of finally returning the book. The woman told the library staff that she thought of returning the book many times but did not get the opportunity. Even after so many years, the book was in 'excellent well-read condition', Epsom Community Library wrote in a Facebook post. The woman told the library staff that she took Myths and Legends of Maoriland as a child and now is a grandmother herself. She said she had read the book a number of times over the years. But since the book was issued on 17 December, 1948 and should have been returned in a week's time, she actually has a heavy fine to be paid. According to the terms of the library, the woman should be fined 102.50 pounds for the 24,604 days it was overdue that too if not adjusted with the inflation. But the Epsom Library has decided not to fine her and were more than happy to get the book back and hear the story.
