Open Access Global Trends and CMU Experiences: Lecture video and slides

The KAUST University Library Annual Outreach Lecture 2021 on "Open Access global trends and CMU experiences" was delivered by Prof. Keith Webster, Dean of University Libraries Carnegie Mellon University, the USA on 28th January 2021. This lecture reviewed the growth of open access in recent years and considered the position of major publishers as they adjust their business models. Key developments explained include the impact of Plan S, the shift towards transformative read and publish agreements and the impact of mergers and acquisitions on the commercial landscape. The lecture also illustrated the opportunities and challenges for individual institutions like CMU. While introducing the speaker, Dr. J. K. Vijayakumar, the KAUST Library Director has announced the transformative open access agreements established at KAUST. One nation, one subscription

Dear moderator, Request you to post the following in LIS Forum: Dear friends, Widely talked *‘One nation, one subscription’* (draft S&T policy) is not a new idea. Way back in the 1990s a similar proposal that ‘*no two libraries in India will subscribe to the same journal’* was made by Prof. Vishvanathan, then Director, INSDOC (and quoted by an international journal). This happened after too many and too long efforts of ‘rationalisation of subscription to journals’ by DST. Of course, *no two libraries in India will subscribe to the same journal* never took off. As a student (over 50 years ago), while studying information systems of various countries I heard/ read about *VINITI* of USSR, which used to subscribe to *one copy of all significant journals* of the world and translate each issue cover to cover to print to distribute to Russian scholars and researchers. By doing so, they have not only achieved ‘*one nation, one subscription’*, but *overcome barriers to language and OA* within the country. All these were easily possible for them within reasonable expenditure because of the totalitarian nature of the country. One another difference, today, is that we are talking of e-journals and not print journals. In a democratic set up, knowingly that it is impracticable and prohibitively costly, should we go with ‘one nation, one subscription’? If pursued, it will be like *‘networking for resource sharing’* and *‘consortia approach to subscription’* projects of past 2-3 decades where covert objectives of *centralization of resources and authority/ power *are met but not savings and extra service. Issues are certainly debatable! LIS Profession @ Crossroads

Dear Friends, I am continuously following the discussion of the tagline "Profession @ Crossroads." Postings of Dodamani, Vijesh, and Satish, I have a basic question in myself, who is responsible for this kind of treatment? We LIS Professionals want everything to be served on a Golden Plate without effort. There is a famous statement of John F. Kennedy delivered in his presidential inaugural speech after taking oath as President of America on January 20, 1961 "Ask not what your country can do for you; Ask what you can do for your country." Yes! Friends, we need to apply this statement to our Profession also. Let us retrospect ourselves, what we have done to our Profession after enjoying the plumpy Cake from the Profession? We all cry when something bad happens to the Profession, and some others sympathize with their couple of postings on the LIS Forum, and on the third day, we all forget. Friends, many of us have come to the LIS Profession accidentally. Some of us joined the Profession because we did not get seats in other desired courses or did not get jobs from the courses we had completed. So, now we should be thankful to the Profession which has given us bread without any discrimination. We blame our Associations for their inactiveness! Why? Who has made them inactive? We do not have time to repair the mistakes of our elected Associations. We are all busy with our Growth and have no time to think of the Profession. We are part of one or the other Associations. Have we any time thought of participating in the activities of the Association. Friends, Associations will be inactive only when we are not actively supporting the Associations' activities. I strongly suggest all my professional friends kindly unite together and actively participate in one or the other initiatives of the Associations and make them feel that their efforts are reaching the last professional. Dear sir/Madam,  Attituded of both Government and Private Intuitions towards library professionals are same. They looks down us as if we are not productive, even they don't spare a single chance to mock library professionals. These kind of situations happens because of lack of creativity, knowledge, enthusiasm and communication skills among most of our professionals. When it comes to validate our professional demands majority of the library professionals are not able to defend themselves because they can't speak better English and they are unsophisticated in their approach.
