The term "Open Access" was used by Dr. S.R Ranganathan to describe a library system where a "reader" is permitted to go to the stack and browse through the collection. This is what the modern libraries now follow. However, in those days, libraries were not "open access" as the readers were required to give details of required book to the Library Staff. At the most, a reader was permitted to access the Library Catalogue. By advocating "Open Access" he wanted to provide the benefits of "browsing approach" to the readers. 2. The Works of Dr. S.R Ranganathan are wonderful. I happen read the Original Works "FIVE LAWS and PROLEGOMENA to Library Classification. Five Laws has been written in a very interesting format of "Animated Talks / Dialogues". I wish these should be available now in Open Access [as understood these days] Mode. 3. SRELS may stand to loose financially. But then, There are ways to compensate. They may put up their own web site which may be sponsored / Or Advertisement revenue could be generated. 4. Really we talk a lot about Prof Ranganathan's five laws but I doubt really how many of us have really gone through the original work. Most of us get the references from the secondary sources only. Of course there are some other works like Prolegomena...etc. which are also often referred to but rarely seen in original, five laws being a small book can well be digitised.

Mainly, the CCC is much comfortably can be revised. unfortunately, many students and colleagues of Late Dr Ranganathan, take his name for their own purposes. they make use of SRR name for their selfishness. they never bothered to revise or sponsor intensive studies on his works. Every one takes pride in associating their names with SRR. I am one of the lucky persons to have taken a gift (CCC ) from SRELS in 1968, duly signed by the great man. there is every possibility of sponsoring studies on relevance of his theories. I agree with Mr Gouder. Lis-forum has already become (by virtue of heavy usage, members from diverse institutions, and the perceived utility by subscribers) number one among such forums for librarians and library science. It is necessary for the professional to keep abreast of happenings in the country. Therefore posts from other forums should be welcome. Only one minor problems needs to be addressed. As I am greedy, I subscribe to several mailing lists: Lis-forum, corp. librarians, Emala, IATLIS,Lis-net etc. When messages are cross-posted a lot of duplication at the subscriber's end occurs. As many messages contain replies to some first link in a thread, one has to read through a lot of messages before deleting duplicates. How can we avoid such duplication? It is very pathetic to know that due to the nonavailability of sufficient number of copies many library and information science graduates are unable to read the book. The case is similar for other books penned by Dr Ranganthan. He had preached open access and accessibility to information throughout his life. And it is his books being obstructed, by whatsoever the reasons be, for access. I would like to appeal the Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science (SRELS), which holds the copyright for Dr Ranganathan's books, to concentrate on popularising his ideas by digitising all his works and giving it for free. It will be a boon for the students and professionals in the field of Library and Information Science. Now the technology has allowed us to achieve what Dr.Ranganathan has propounded/dreamt of in a greater way. Let us take advantage of the technology and emerging trends in publishing. Dear All, Its nice to meet (virtually) such like-minded people. Like Nivedita says, it is not possible to attend the conferences and seminars which are taking place. Useful information which is generated is limited to the people who attend the conferences. The barriers that we face, of time, physical location, finance etc can be overcome by achiving the information generated in the seminars/conferences etc, on an open platform (like Aparajita has suggested). In this way, all of us Library Proessionals could be keeping abreast with what is happening in the field, and we could implement some of the useful suggestions made. Our field is now fast changing. E-Learning is growing at a very fast pace. For a long time, professionals in our field have been battling with technology. "Sink or Swim" has made us adapt as and when necessary. But is this enough? Compared to the development of Libraries in the western society, and the kind of services they provide, we in India are lagging far behind (believe me, not for the lack of talent). Not that we need to follow where they lead, but surely we can pick and choose what is best and implement it!! Information, useful information, proper use of the same, and how to implement it whenever and wherever necessary should be made available to all. All of us try to make a difference wherever we work. The innovative ideas that we use to "sell and/or market" our skills, the difference that we make when we interact with our clientele etc should not be limited to just one library. New developments and where and how we could use the same could be shared by us all. Our ideas that have made a difference could be shared, anything that we have pioneered or we are planning to implement could be shared and discussed. That way, we will not only be able to perform better in our spheres, but also we could interact with people who have, "been there-done that", share their experiences learn from them and avoid mistakes and pit-falls. Apply Open Access to Five Laws?

Dear Colleagues, I am replying to the recent post about the article, "India pioneered open access publishing system" at http://www.deccanherald.com/deccanherald/sep182005/state1942332005917.asp I believe S.R. Ranganathan's Five Laws of Library Science would have a greater impact on Open Access if the full text of the original edition of Five Laws was made freely available online for non-profit use by LIS professionals, scholars and students, and the general public worldwide. Although Five Laws is frequently cited as a seminal work in library and information science, the book itself does not appear to have ever been digitized or published in electronic format. Not even print copies of Five Laws are readily available for loan or sale, at least in the United States. According to OCLC's WorldCat, only about 50 libraries have copies of the first edition of Five Laws in their collections. While more libraries hold later editions and reprints, no editions of Five Laws appear to be in stock or currently available for sale from booksellers. A recent journal article estimates that between 4,000 and 5,000 students graduate from U.S. library schools each year. Since copies are not readily available, many of these students probably have not read Ranganathan's Five Laws, arguably the most important work in our field. The Sarada Ranganathan Endowment Laws for Library Science (SRELS) at Bangalore owns the copyright to the Five Laws of Library Science. Do any LIS-Forum subscribers have ideas about how SRELS might go about digitizing Five Laws? Are there any Indian libraries, universities, or non-profit organizations that would be able to donate technical expertise and equipment needed to adequately preserve and disseminate the text in digital format? Is any grant money available to help finance such a project? Would any librarians or students volunteer their time to help? Perhaps if we shared our ideas here and with SRELS at srels(a)vsnl.com, we could find a way to provide open access to the work identified as the origin of Open Access.
