CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS: Social Information Retrieval Systems
by Puna Das 25 Oct '05

CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS Social Information Retrieval Systems: Emerging Technologies and Applications for Searching the Web Effectively Editors: Dion H. Goh and Schubert Foo, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Publisher: Idea Group Inc. Proposal Submission Deadline: 31 December 2005 INTRODUCTION With the increasing popularity of the Internet, people have now come to depend more on the Web, digital libraries and other information retrieval systems to search for information. However the performance of existing search engines has often been unsatisfactory in meeting users' information needs due to the enormous amount of information returned, exacerbated by the fact that not all of these results are relevant nor of acceptable quality. This has thus led to a situation where users are swamped with too much information, resulting in difficulty sifting through documents in search of relevant content. A variety of techniques have been adopted on the Web to address these problems inherent in information search. These range from engaging human experts to judge the relevance of Web sites to innovative algorithms that determine relevance by the characteristics of links found between sites. Research in information seeking behavior suggests an alternative promising approach in helping users meet their information needs. Many studies have found that interaction and collaboration with other people is an important part in the process of information seeking and use. It is not uncommon that in searching for information, we tap on our social networks - friends, colleagues, librarians, etc., to help locate what we need. Social information retrieval refers to a family of techniques that assist users in obtaining information to meet their information needs by harnessing other users' expert knowledge or search experience. Examples include sharing of queries, social bookmarking and tagging, social network analysis, subjective relevance judgments, and collaborative filtering. The area provides a promising avenue for the design and implementation of a new generation of information retrieval systems. Social Information Retrieval Systems: Emerging Technologies and Applications for Searching the Web Effectively presents current state-of-the-art developments in this area and also includes case studies, challenges and trends. Contributors will have the opportunity to inform and educate academics, researchers, information retrieval product managers and software developers, librarians and students in the area of social information retrieval. TOPICS Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following: * Algorithms, software components and tools * Applications and case studies * Architectural, design and implementation issues * Classification and indexing * Collaborative browsing * Collaborative digital reference services * Collaborative filtering and recommender systems * Collaborative querying * Content delivery * Cooperative software agents for information retrieval * Enabling technologies and applications * Evaluation of systems, algorithms and interfaces * Information extraction and mining * Information retrieval in computer-supported collaborative work/groupware systems * Information visualization * Ontology-based services * Personalization * Privacy and security * Social informatics * Social information seeking models * Social networks and information retrieval * Social tagging and bookmarking * Trends and challenges * Usability * User and community needs and behavior * User interfaces SUBMISSION INFORMATION Potential contributors are invited to submit a 2-5 page chapter proposal by 31 December 2005 detailing the background, motivations and structure of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by 31 January 2006 on the status of their proposals and sent chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are due on 31 May 2006 and should be at least 8,000-9,000 words in length. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Final revised manuscripts are due on 31 August 2006. The book is scheduled to be published by Idea Group Inc., www.idea-group.com, publisher of the Idea Group Publishing, Information Science Publishing, IRM Press, CyberTech Publishing and Idea Group Reference imprints in 2008. Chapter proposal due: 31 December 2005 Notification of acceptance: 31 January 2006 Full chapter due:31 May 2006 Notification:31 July 2006 Revised chapter due: 31 August 2006 INQUIRIES AND SUBMISSIONS Inquiries and submissions (Microsoft Word files) should be sent by e-mail to: Dr. Dion Goh (Email: ashlgoh(a)ntu.edu.sg) Other contact information: School of Communication and Information Nanyang Technological University 31 Nanyang Link, Singapore 637718 SINGAPORE Tel: (65) 6790 6290Fax: (65) 6791-5214 Web site: http://www.ntu.edu.sg/home/ashlgoh/social-ir/ ________________________________________________ Anup Kumar Das Information and Communication Society of India New Delhi ________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ Yahoo! R/S Professionals please visit this url : http://www.oss4lib.org/projects/ about oss4lib Our mission is to cultivate the collaborative power of open source software engineering to build better and free systems for use in libraries. Toward this end, we maintain a listing <projects/> of free software and systems designed for libraries (the physical, books-on-shelves kind), and we track news about project updates or related issues of interest. oss4lib started at the Yale Medical Library <http://www.med.yale.edu/library> in early February 1999 thinking there were probably other folks like us out there who might be working on free library software or looking for same. Our reasons for wanting to see Open Source take off in the library software arena are straightforward, fairly typical, and mostly outlined in the Open Source Systems for Libraries: Getting Started <articles/oss4libarticle.html> piece. You would think librarians would have figured this shared software thing out years ago. :) who we are Dan Chudnov <http://curtis.med.yale.edu//dchud/> (dchud) started oss4lib and maintains it, along with the many readers who often post news (use the submit link above!). Gillian Mayman designed the site. We like <pinstripeheaven.html>. support us! oss4lib is a volunteer effort. If you like oss4lib, consider buying snazzy oss4lib tshirts and mugs <http://www.cafepress.com/oss4lib>; we'll get $3/shirt or $2/mug, which doesn't sound like much but actually really helps. Or if you like to buy books online consider using this link to Powell's <http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/partner?partner_id=23406> first... 10% of your purchase comes this way too. Thanks! how it runs The dynamic pieces of the site are written in php, with stories held in mysql tables. Plain, simple stuff. Costly journals and developing countries
by Subbiah Arunachalam 22 Oct '05

22 Oct '05

Friends: According to the University of Pennsylvania's Van Pelt Library "An annual subscription to the chemistry journal Tetrahedron, published by Elsevier, costs the library $31,600." I wish to ask all organic chemists, especially those working in India, China, Brazil, South Africa, and other developing countries, is the journal worth that price? It would be interesting to see how many Indian researchers ACTUALLY read articles published in Tetrahedron and quote them in their own papers. While journals of the quality of PNASc are available absolutely free on the web, it is rather difficult to accept that developing country libraries should subscribe to such outrageoulsy expensive journals. Tetrahedron was originally owned by Pergamon Press (Robert Maxwell) and later acquired by the Elsevier group. India has several consortia subscriptions to Elsevier's Science Direct aggregation of journals. But very few librarians have invested the time and little effort required to set up their own institutional open access archives, despite the excellent model provided by the Indian Institute of Science. Indian authors publishing in such expensive journals are unwittingly doing a great disservice to progress of science in India. As they are so expensive, many institutions would not subscribe to these journals and therefore most Indian researchers will not have easy access to the papers published in them. Thus results of reserch supported by Indian taxpayers' money is NOT AVAILABLE to other Indian researchers. Subbiah Arunachalam ---- >From Peter Suber's blog on OA University of Pennsylvania cuts 2,255 subscriptions, blames price hikes Jesse Rogers, As costs rise, library cuts journals, The Daily Pennsylvanian, October 20, 2005. Excerpt: Students combing the stacks at Van Pelt Library may notice they have a little extra breathing room. The library has cut 2,255 journal subscriptions from its 2004-05 holdings, as journal prices have increased faster than the library's budget. But the size of the materials budget -- $13.1 million allotted for books, journals, magazines, periodicals, films and electronic resources -- is not to blame, library officials said. Rather, officials blame big publishing companies, which they say have raised prices as the companies have bought up academic journals over the last two decades. In 1993, journals accounted for 64 percent of the materials budget. This number has increased to almost 70 percent in the 2005 materials budget. Publishing giant Reed Elsevier claims 18 percent of the market in science, technology and medical journals. An annual subscription to the chemistry journal Tetrahedron, published by Elsevier, costs the library $31,600. The Brown University library system has also criticized price increases. However, it has not had to cancel subscriptions since the early 1990s, as its materials budget has kept pace with journals' price increases. The 2005 Brown materials budget stands at $5 million, of which 66 percent is devoted to journals. As research libraries across the nation decry price increases, Penn's library system is calling for reform through its Winning Independence Web site. Linked to the library system's Web site this September, the site encourages professors to be active on journals' editorial boards and to push for fair pricing policies. At the heart of the uproar over pricing is frustration -- on the part of the library and some professors -- with publishers' restrictive copy agreements. Many journal publishers require faculty members to sign over their copyright as a condition for publication. This prevents professors from submitting published journal articles to online archives such as Penn's [OA repository] Scholarly Commons, which is one way the library can increase its holdings in the face of a limited budget.

From Peter Suber's blog on OA

Friends: Here is something interesting and relevant - fro Peter Suber's blog. Forward it to vice chancellors, principals, headmasters you know! Arun More on Sun's GELC Sharing Teaching Tools Online, Wired Campus Blog, October 20, 2005. Scott McNealy, the CEO of Sun Microsystems, has long promoted the use of open-source software, in which volunteers work collaboratively online to build and improve computer code. Now he hopes to bring the same basic concept to the development of online teaching materials. In a keynote speech on Wednesday at the Educause annual meeting in Orlando, Mr. McNealy announced the creation of a nonprofit organization called the Global Education and Learning Community, which will provide a framework for educators to work together to develop and distribute educational resources online. For now the project is focusing on K-12 education, but in an interview after his speech, Mr. McNealy said that he hopes to extend the system to higher education eventually. "It's optional. No parent, teacher, or student has to use GELC content, but it's there," he added. "It's just a broader and deeper and richer platform on which to build your curriculum, and at zero cost."

Dear Professionals, A new page on Google's web site, the Google Librarian Center [ http://www.google.com/services/librarian_center.html] expressly targets librarians, advising them that Google will launch a quarterly newsletter aimed just at librarians. Early New Zealand Books online
by Mailing List Manager 20 Oct '05

20 Oct '05

Date: Wed, 19 Oct 2005 12:55:35 +0530 From: Bhojaraju G <bhojaraju.g(a)gmail.com> *Early New Zealand Books online* http://www.enzb.auckland.ac.nz The University of Auckland Library announces the official launch of its Early New Zealand Books digital collection. The collection currently comprises 20 books (23 volumes) including the majority of those published in the first half of the 19th century. The books are keyword searchable, individually or as a collection, with keyword-in-context displays of hit terms at three different levels of inclusiveness. Searches can be limited to words and phrases in picture captions and chapter summaries, if desired. All the illustrations are available at original size and double size for viewing detail. There are links to images of original pages. This collection is available primarily because of the enthusiasm and dedication of John Laurie, Subject Librarian for Anthropology, Applied Language Studies and Linguistics in the General Library, Te Tumu Herenga, the University of Auckland Library. The "Early New Zealand Books " collection is freely available on the Web. We believe that the collection will be of immense benefit to researchers of the period and the general public. Many of the books have been out-of-print and difficult to access in closed collections and keyword searchability will facilitate a whole range of new studies. It is hoped to expand the collection over the next few years to cover more significant nineteenth century books. Forty targeted books are listed on the website. In the same context, let me inform members that Google also has a facility to Personalise its Home Page. For that you need to have some google account say GMAIL Account. Once you are logged in, you can set up number of RSS feed sources at http://www.google.com/ig for example you can add new section and add following URL for OpenMED@NIC latest additions: http://openmed.nic.in/perl/latest_tool?output=rss http://my.yahoo.com also provides similar facility to set up RSS Feeds. Have a try while adding feed from http://openmed.nic.in/perl/latest_tool?output=rss Thanks.
