Library and Information Science (LIS) education is not an exception to this phenomenon. Though, UGC Model Curriculum was developed in the year 2001 under the leadership of Prof. C.R. Karisiddappa, yet many changes have taken place since then. It is high time to make the LIS curricula consistent with the market requirements and to reduce the widening gap between professional theory and practice as well. Taking cognizance of ICT enabled developments, it has been decided to organize the XXXIII IATLIS National Conference on the theme Building Curriculum with a Difference: A Vision for LIS Education for 21st Century'. It is hoped that IATLIS 2006 would be a suitable platform to redefine the LIS curricula and vision for the near future. IATLIS Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS) (founded 1969) is a professional association of about 500 teachers and professionals. Since its inception in 1969, IATLIS has been active in taking up several issues of LIS Education in India especially relating to the development of curriculum, teaching methods, infrastructure, teachers' training, etc. It also actively works for the promotion of the professional interests of LIS teachers. As part of its activities, it conducts national seminars, workshops, training programmes etc. It brings out its official organ IATLIS Communication besides publishing pre-conference volumes. Punjabi University, Patiala Punjabi University Patiala, one of the premier institutions of higher education in the north of India, was established on the 30th April, 1962under the Punjabi University Act 1961. This is the second University in the world to be named after a language, the first being Hebrew University of Israel. That same year, two of the 20 suggested names were chosen for the Nobel: Harold E. Varmus and J. Michael Bishop. Subsequently, four more of the 20 received the Prize: Edwin G. Krebs in 1992, Alfred G. Gilman in 1994, Eric R. Kandel in 2000, and Sydney Brenner in 2002. Of course, while six were correct choices, 14 were wrong--or at least wrong to date. He has scripted and directed numerous short films and docu-features and in most instances anchored them. He traveled extensively to make these features, visiting the Soviet Union several times during the dismantling phase of ¡¥glasnost¡Š and ¡¥perestroika¡Š; East Germany (GDR) just before the collapse of the Berlin Wall; Romania in the immediate wake of the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu; several countries in eastern Europe to get a feel at first hand of the collapse of communism in that part of the world; several states in Europe and the USA for a mega feature on Disarmament and Development. He also produced a number of special features on the issues affecting South Asia covering Sri Lanka , Afghanistan and the Maldives . Apart from his television documentaries and features, he scripted and directed a film in 16 mm on a friend fighting cancer titled ¡¥Vijayalakshmi, the story of a young woman with cancer, and a science-fictional feature titled ¡¥Nemesis-II¡Š. Scripted and directed a full length feature film in Hindi titled ¡¥Kaya Taran¡Š (Chrysalis). The film deals with the crisis of identity in a multicultural society that turns continually volatile, and straddles the anti-Sikh carnage in the wake of the assassination of Mrs. Indira Gandhi in 1984 and the post Godhra anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat in 2002 (www.kayataran.com) It won him the G.Aravindan Award for the Best Debutant Filmmaker in India of 2004 and has been selected for various international film festivals. In 1999, Sashi Kumar founded the Media Development Foundation as a nonprofit public Trust dedicated to excellence in journalism education and best practices in the profession. Library Hotel From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Library Hotel is a 60-room boutique hotel in New York City, located at 299 Madison Avenue (at 41st Street), near the New York Public Library, Bryant Park, and Grand Central Terminal. The hotel boasts a unique organizing principle: each of its ten guest floors has a theme, designated after a major category of the Dewey Decimal Classification (the 5th floor, for example, is the 500s, the Sciences), with each room as a subcategory or genre, such as Mathematics (Room 500.1) or Botany (Room 500.004). Open Access: a basic element for development

Respected Sir/Madam and Dear Friends, If the seed of Open Access can be shown properly to the bed of Five Laws of Library Science of Dr. Ranganathan it wil be more stable and enduring then it can not be rooted out by any copyright lobby.Our main motto is to provide right information to the right people at the right time so that our society can excel in every sphere of life .This way we do connect us to the developmental process of our nation.This has also been mentioned in our Indian constitution as our fundamental duty(Part IV -A /Article 51-A of the constitution)- To strive towards excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity so that the nation constantly rises to higher levels of endeavour and achievement.To excel in any sphere of life , access to the right information is a very basic need and if people are denied to that, then we will have to compromise with the future of the country in terms of R & D, economy, competitiveness etc. We are facilitating and empowering people by providing information in order to fulfil their fundamental duties towards nation. And we can not afford compromise to function as copyright cops deviating from our core duty as information provider . Multinational Publishing houses can not expects us to do that but at the same time I am not saying that Library/ information professionals should be gross copyright violators. We will have to fight back keeping everything in mind to make our dream of Open Acess come true. Respected Sir/ Madam and Dear Friends Open-Access has become a buzz-word in these days. Many renowned persons are also advocating strongly for OA. It is said that there are 2 schools regarding OA initiatives- one is, journal reform school and other one is self-archiving school. Both can be regarded as an alternative to models for accessing to the copyrighted academic and scientific information. As a concept and philosophy, it is great. It is very true that the research conducted in various R & D labs like CSIR Labs, ICMR Labs, DBT Labs, and ICAR Labs is done with the public money collected from the people. Hence, people have every right to access these scientific results in the form of a research report that are mostly published in the peer reviewed journals with strong copyright policy. But unfortunately, presently, OA initiatives have very little impact on S & T researchers for whom the total initiative is meant for. If they do not believe in this novel movement, the effort of our initiative will be of no use. We have to make them convinced in all platforms about its merits and at the same time persuasion of big scholarly publishing houses should be done from all possible angles. Developing countries already achieved pioneering initiatives in many places to promote OA and therefore they should play the leading role in shaping OA world wide. The questions related with economics, copyright, OA and sustainable development are important practical questions and we will have to develop a model for its sustenance. But the great dilemma is that, will this dream of OA be ever possible or it will bow down to copyright lobby of multinationals of the West. Already developed world has responded by suggesting that OA is dangerous to scientific innovation and will destroy already existing peer-reviewed journals. Some of the multinational publishing houses have changed their copyright agreements in order to support OA self-archiving. The results of the RoMEo study attest to this. It is still unclear, will majority of the publishers allow it or not. Still most of the scientists do prefer to publish their research reports in subscription based journals.All scientists should encourage to join this great movement to protect our knowledge and heritage and they must make them understand that copyright can stand as a barrier to the diffusion of their academic work, a barrier to the percolation of the knowledge to the grass root level, an agent that enhance disparity among people and countries , increase the gap between the haves and have nots. Let us promise together, we will make them convinced at any cost otherwise that days are not too far when all knowledge will be privatized, caged and monopolized in the hands of some few multinational publishing houses. Dr Khaiser Nikam Reader in LISc University of Mysore Mysore - 570 006 Email:khaiser.nikam@gmail.com Mulissa Friday talk -1 - Friday the 18/09/06 -30.30 to 6.00 PM The department of library science under the aegis of Mulissa Mysore University Library and Information Students Association, on every Friday after noon organizes a special lecture on different topics. This has been the practice for many decades now .The present academic years lecture series were inaugurated on last Friday the 18th September 06.The excerpts of the function are as follows: "University of Mysore, Department of Library and Information Science is one of the first departments to have been initiated during the erstwhile Mysore state in 1962 and started functioning in the year 1965 under the headship of Late Prof. P K Patil. And Dr S.R. Ranganathan, the father of Library Science, framed the BLISc syllabus for the department " said Dr Khaiser Nikam, faculty advisor, while speaking about the decades old MULISSA - students' forum,, at the inaugural function of the association. Prof. A R Seetha Ram, from Ramakrishna Institute of Moral and Spiritual Education (RIMSE) and the Director of Paramahamsa Yoga Center, Bhogadi Mysore was the guest speaker. Prof Seeth Ram, while delivering the inaugural special Lecture on " Spiritual Education and Personality Development " recalled how he has been associated with MyDLIS & Library Science, as his brother in law late Sri .TKS Iyengar was the librarian at IISc,Bangalore , and his wife Dr.Gita Seetha Ram ,CFTRI library , is the alumnus of this department . Prof. Seetha Ram who was to give a talk for about 45 minutes went up to 1hr and 45 minutes ,with out the knowledge of the audiences . All the faculty members and the students immensely benefited from his talk, as the talk was followed by a " Yogic tips workshop". In his talk Dr Ram emphasized on the need for positive attitude, right perception and how yoga can be practiced for total growth of the personality of an individual. Dr.Mallinath Kumbar, Chairman of the deportment gave his presidential remarks at the end. Other faculty members Prof.R Shalini Urs, Dr,M .Chandrashekar and Dr N .S. Harinarayana were present. Ms Smitha, A.P, welcomed the gathering; Ms.Sajan C compeered and Naveen Kumar delivered Vote of thanks.
