[IITGN Library Talk] 'Advancing our scholarly publishing system that is open, sustainable and equitable' by Colleen Campbell (Max Planck Digital Library) on 25th October, 2021 at 5.30pm
by TS Kumbar 07 Nov '21

07 Nov '21

Dear All, We are happy to announce an Invited talk by Ms *Colleen Campbell,* *Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) <https://www.mpdl.mpg.de/en/>*as a part of our celebrations to observe Open Access Week 2021 at IIT Gandhinagar. Open Access Week, being a global event and entering its 10th year, is an opportunity for the academic and research community to learn more about the potential benefits of Open Access, to share what they have learned with colleagues, and to help inspire wider participation in making Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research. The theme for International Open Access Week <http://www.openaccessweek.org/> 2021, to be held from October 25-31, 2021, is *“It Matters How We Open Knowledge: Building Structural Equity.”* To mark this occasion, the Library at IITGN has organized a virtual talk. The details of the same are as mentioned: *Title: Advancing our scholarly publishing system that is open, sustainable, and equitable* *Speaker: Colleen Campbell, Partner Development in the Open Access 2020 Initiative, Max Planck Society, Max Planck Digital Library, Germany* *Date and Time: Monday, 25th October, 2021, 5.30 - 6.30 p.m.* *The link for joining the talk:* https://iitgn-ac-in.zoom.us/j/92809401850?pwd=a0xJQndYTFlUR1pkTjdWOFBYWTRmZ… Meeting ID: 928 0940 1850 Passcode: 766857 *The focus of the talk:* It has been nearly 20 years since the first Berlin Open Access Conference produced the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities, a foundational vision statement for open access which has garnered consensus of the global research community. How has the landscape in scholarly publishing changed since then? What stage of the open access transition have we reached, and where do we go from here? The research community was the initiator of the open access movement, but over the years open access has often been interpreted as a “top down” policy decision of research funders; the time has come for the research community to reclaim its ownership and advance strategies based on practical idealism to create a scholarly publishing system that is open, sustainable and equitable. *Brief profile of the speaker:* *Colleen Campbell* leads external engagement in the OA transition at the *Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL), <https://www.mpdl.mpg.de/en/> *focusing on activities to empower librarians and other stakeholders with strategic insights and practical skills as they work to enable an open, sustainable and equitable scholarly publishing environment. In her role at MPDL she coordinates the *Open Access 2020 * <https://oa2020.org/>Initiative, an international effort that aims to transition today’s scholarly journals to open access publishing models; the *ESAC Initiative* <https://esac-initiative.org/>, a global community of practice of research libraries and consortia promoting efficiencies and standards around the negotiation and implementation of transformative and open access publishing agreements; and she advises on strategic engagement in Germany’s *DEAL Operations* <https://deal-operations.de/en/>. She currently serves on the Managing Board of EIFL (Electronic Information for Libraries), the LIBER Open Access Working Group, and the advisory boards of a number of other scholarly communication initiatives and organizations. Previously European Director for Strategic Partnerships at JSTOR and the digital preservation service Portico, she has over 20 years’ experience forging partnerships across all areas of the academic information sector in the service of scholarship. [image: OA flyer.png] We cordially invite you to join and interact with the speaker. Libraries are the natural place to curate content
by Subbiah Arunachalam 06 Nov '21

“The focus on learning materials should move from the bookstore to the library,” Baraniuk says. “Libraries are the natural place to curate content developed not only at their school, but through collaboration with the entire academic community, across the country and the world. That is going to be the future.” - Richard Baraniuk of Rice University. Librarians provide tools to help students find better information – but schools are cutting their numbers
by Mohan Hr 05 Nov '21

05 Nov '21

Very interesting and contextual article -- HR Mohan Librarians provide tools to help students find better information – but schools are cutting their numbers School librarians hear the question all the time: Why do we need school libraries and school librarians when students have the internet? The perception is that a computer and Wi-Fi are all students need for their informational and recreational needs. Meanwhile, the number of school librarians in the U.S. has dropped about 20% over the past decade, according to a July 2021 study funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Many states, including Arizona, Texas and Pennsylvania, do not fund or mandate school librarian positions. And an analysis from the National Center for Education Statistics revealed that Hispanic, nonwhite and nonnative English speakers are the students most affected by the decline in librarian positions. “Access to school librarians has become a major educational equity issue,” says Keith Curry Lance, who with Debra Kachel led the IMLS study. In a recent email he told me, “School districts losing librarians tend to be ones that can least afford the loss in a society characterized by increasing economic inequality.” As a former school librarian who researches school library issues and trains future school librarians, I know that decades of research demonstrate that K-12 school librarians have a significant impact on student achievement. Here are four functions that school librarians carry out that I believe make their role more important now than ever. https://theconversation.com/librarians-provide-tools-to-help-students-find-… -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

[DST-CPR, CSP, and JRD Tata Memorial Library, IISc] Observance of International Open Access Week 2021 on 29 October at 7.30 PM
by Francis Jayakanth 31 Oct '21

31 Oct '21

From: madhan muthu <mu.madhan(a)gmail.com> Sent: 24 October 2021 10:20 DST-Centre for Policy Research (CPR) Centre for Society and Policy Indian Institute of Science and J.R.D. Tata Memorial Library, Indian Institute of Science invite you to the (online) event to observe and celebrate the International Open Access Week 2021; the session will feature three lectures; see below for details. This year's OA Week event at IISc is the fifth in a series. It is also special since it is being held in honour of Prof. Arunachalam, a champion of the open access movement in India, who turned 80 in September 2021. Date: 29 October 2021 Time: 7.30 PM (IST) | 2.00 PM (GMT) | 10 AM (EDT) Venue: MS Teams (Click here to join<https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-%20join/19%3ameeting_Y2Q3MzY0MTAtZTUwY…>) Padmanabhan Balaram Former Director, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru Subbiah Arunachalam, Scientometrics, Open Access Movement Heather Joseph Executive Director, Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) Open by Default and Equitable by Design: The Future of the Open Access Movement Leslie Chan Professor, University of Toronto, Scarborough, Canada Opening Sciences from Below Abstracts Open by Default and Equitable by Design -- The Future of the Open Access Movement: The Open Access movement is about to mark its 20th anniversary. At a meeting convened in Budapest by the Open Society Institute in December of 2001, a small but diverse group met to explore ways to accelerate progress in the international effort to make research articles freely available on the internet. They explored the most effective and affordable strategies for serving the interests of the researchers and the institutions that support research, examined ways to make the transition to open access and economically self-sustaining, and discussed how separate initiatives could best work together to achieve broader success. The result was the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI), which offered the first definition of open access. The BOAI is a statement of principle, a statement of strategy, and a statement of commitment. Two decades later, while much progress has been made, significant work remains to be done. This talk will explore the key challenges facing the Open Access movement and propose areas of concentration to ensure that global research enterprise is one that is truly open by default, and equitable by design. Opening Sciences from Below: Mainstream discourses have tended to frame Open Science as a set of neutral standards, tools, and practices to be followed, often with the objective of pursuing utilitarian or market-driven outcomes. In this talk, I reflect on some of these framings and propose other ways of conceiving open science, considering both the benefits and the potential harms to communities affected by the research. Drawing from lessons learned from OCSDNet and the Open Science and Decolonization of Knowledge project, we suggest that an inclusive open science involves a highly dynamic process of negotiating and challenging power relations within highly situated socio-political contexts, and involving actors, institutions, and communities with varying claims for knowledge legitimacy. Science policy making needs to take these power imbalances into account so as not to perpetuate and exacerbate existing inequities. -- Madhan, M
