This workshop aims to provide a practical exposure on the application of Wink a free software for creating different interactive self-learning modules/tutorials for various requirements, including that of information products. About the Wink Software Wink is a tutorial and presentation creation software, primarily aimed at creating tutorials on how to use software (like a tutor for MS-Word/Excel etc). Using Wink one can capture screenshots, add explanations boxes, buttons, titles etc and generate a highly effective interactive tutorials. Using Wink one can create online tutorials viewable across the web. Similar applications sell for hundreds of dollars, while Wink is free with several unique features including the multimedia capability. Dear all, The emphasis on the importance of communication skill for librarians is very welcome. It is a fact that one can deny on his/her own peril. But many librarians are still in the old mold. They are scared of communicating with teachers and scholars. They will talk long hours about rubbish. But feel tongue tied to enquire and inform. The reason lies in a disconnect with what is going on in the scholarly world. They will hardly work to refine search methodologies. What is required from teaching schools is better skill development in communication and a bit of psychological training as well as to develop empathy with the users. Libraries are an effective source of information to be shared by the people of all kinds, which are engaged in creating and maintaining digital libraries. The availability and use of digital libraries is gradually becoming the norm for the provision of literature and information in all the fields and research. Digitization has become the buzz world in libraries and information centers. The feature of digitization like enabling high level of data compression and easy retrieval are the factors that have made the libraries to convert their documents, books, journals, monographs, reports containing the text, pictures, audio, video in suitable digital formats. Digital Libraries are catering to information services interacting with online databases of journals and other resources. Digital Library plays an important role in creating, indexing and retrieving the various forms of digital resources. One of the main challenges in maintaining Digital library is the *Digital Preservation* aspect. Digital preservation is to manage the digital information and to preserve and maintain readability and accessibility across time. It is also being defined by set of *Metadata Standards,* which are structured encoded data that help in resources discovery and management of data. Discussions of metadata have largely centered on issue of resources description. There is however a growing awareness that metadata plays an important role in managing and preserving the digital resources. Google settlement opens the Web to millions of books by jeffrey A. trachtenberg & jessica E. vascellaro A sweeping $125 million settlement between Google Inc. and the publishing industry clears the way for the Internet giant to make many millions of digital books available on the Web, with payments to authors and publishers for their use. If approved by a federal court, the deal, struck after two years of negotiations, will let individuals and institutions buy online access to copyrighted, out-of-print works through Google, and will provide free online views of them at public libraries. Titles that are still in print will be available only if publishers and authors agree to include them. "It may be the biggest book deal in U.S. history," said Paul Aiken, executive director of the Authors Guild. Google has already scanned seven million books for its Google Book Search program and plans to make many millions more available. Only Web users in the U.S. will have access to the new services. The settlement resolves a copyright-infringement lawsuit against Google filed by the Authors Guild more than three years ago in U.S. District Court in New York, as well as a separate suit filed by the Association of American Publishers on behalf of five leading publishers. Terms call for Google to pay $125 million to settle claims from authors and publishers for its earlier digital-scanning efforts, cover legal fees and es tablish a Book Rights Registry that will oversee the new accord. "I would not read anything into the structure," said David Drummond, Googles senior vice president of corporate development and chief legal officer. With the agreement, Google is taking a rare step into the business of selling access to media content. Google will enhance its book-search product, which has struggled to gain traction, with a storefront where consumers can buy titles to read online. Prices will be set by the publisher or by a Google-designed algorithm, with the rights holder getting 63% and Google getting 37% of the revenue. The move breaks with Googles usual approach of selling advertising against digital content and sharing that revenue with partners like newspapers and media companies. It also brings Google into potential competition with digital-book retailers like *Amazon.com Inc.* "Its a new model for us," said Mr. Drummond, who nonetheless played down any competition with Amazon, noting that Googles main objective is to build a better search product. Amazon declined to comment. Public libraries will be offered a free online portal to view the digitized titles, while colleges and universities will be offered a subscription-fee service that will enable students to access these books directly from their dorm rooms.
