Blog - Europe PMC: Europe PMC improves discoverability of preprints
by Subbiah Arunachalam 07 May '22

07 May '22

Friends, Preprints are emerging as the new normal in scholarly communication. Please see https://council.science/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/The-normalization-of-pre… and http://blog.europepmc.org/2022/05/europe-pmc-improves-discoverability-of.ht… I am happy to see DBT Wellcome Alliance as one of the more than 35 funding agencies that are behind this project promoting Open Science. We have a long way to go in India in adopting Open Science practices. Even the postprint servers we have (CSIR Central, Science Central, etc.) are not functioning well, and many researchers are flouting the funders' OA smandate with impunity. I wonder if CSIR, DBT, and DST monitor the compliance of their OA mandates at all. Regards. Re: [LIS-Forum] LIS-Forum Digest, Vol 230, Issue 4

Hello Murari, Thank you for your mail. It is great to know that you are looking at preserving correspondence and making it visible. I would like to suggest that correspondence of individuals is arranged according to archival standards (the International Standard for Archival Description (G) is a great reference: https://www.ica.org/en/isadg-general-international-standard-archival-descri…) This is commonly done at various archival repositories around the world and in India. Archives capture context and process of an individual/organization/community/family/corporate body, and correspondence is one set of material that helps us in that regard. The material can be catalogued starting with simple spreadsheets and/or widely used open source archive platforms like ArchivesSpace: http://archivesspace.org/ and AtoM (Access to Memory): https://www.accesstomemory.org/en/. Both these platforms have fields that comply with archival standards, and also allow the metadata/finding aids to be interoperable and exported across other platforms. There are many such archival cataloguing platforms, of course, and most also allow you to make digital copies visible for access. They are not digital preservation systems, and for that you can refer to other open source systems like Archivematica, https://www.archivematica.org/en/. Again, there are various examples and one place I recommend for seeing a whole range of software platforms is https://bits.ashleyblewer.com/blog/2017/08/09/collection-management-system-… I hope this is useful. Dear Colleagues, Correspondence of the great personalities is of significant value to researchers in the field of History. I have been asked to suggest the metadata fields for cataloging such content. While I am listing essentials based on my understanding, I thought to seek information from experienced professionals. Also, I will be very much thankful for a discussion on whether the open access repository software such as DSpace/eprints would suit this kind of content or if something else is available in open source to make it publicly available. Thanks in advance for your input. These green books are poisonous—and one may be on a shelf near you

These green books are poisonous—and one may be on a shelf near you A toxic green pigment was once used to color everything from fake flowers to book covers. Now a museum conservator is working to track down the noxious volumes. Libraries and rare book collections often carry volumes that feature poisons on their pages, from famous murder mysteries to seminal works on toxicology and forensics. The poisons described in these books are merely words on a page, but some books scattered throughout the world are literally poisonous. These toxic books, produced in the 19th century, are bound in vivid cloth colored with a notorious pigment known as emerald green that’s laced with arsenic. Many of them are going unnoticed on shelves and in collections. So Melissa Tedone, the lab head for library materials conservation at the Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library in Delaware, has launched an effort dubbed the Poison Book Project to locate and catalogue these noxious volumes. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/these-green-books-are-li… -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
