Dear Professional Friends, JRD Tata Memorial Library, IISc and Karnataka State Library Association (KALA) invites you for an event on the celebration of National Library Week 2022. Date & Time: 18th November 2022 @ 4:00 pm Venue: Faculty Hall, Main Building, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru Keynote Address: Title: AR, VR, MR : How Does it Matter - A Human Factor Analysis of Metaverse Speaker: Prof. Pradipta Biswas, Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (CPDM), IISc Abstract: The Covid 19 pandemic and associated work-from-home culture reignites the importance of immersive media. Major industries used various terms like Metaverse (Facebook), Mesh (Microsoft), Nth Floor (Accesnture) and so on to invest and commercialize immersive media related products. Traditionally, immersive media is described through a continuum between reality and virtual reality along with intermediate systems known as Augmented and Mixed Reality systems. In the middle of the commercialization efforts and advertisements from software giants, end users are often confused about the best solution for their needs. There are not many studies on analysing end users’ feedback across the continuum of immersive media. This talk will present analysis on ocular parameters and EEG power bands of different brain regions while users undertook pointing and selection tasks using state-of-the-art AR, MR and VR media. In parallel, novel case studies will be presented from Aerospace, Smart Manufacturing and Assistive Technology involving XR technologies. Coffee/Tea: 5:00 p.m. Registration Link : https://bit.ly/3UjUzvJ with regards, Suresh Balutagi Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru - 560012 -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Open Books

10 Nov '22

Friends and Fellow Information professionals, Please watch https://direct.mit.edu/books/pages/direct-to-open. MIT Press Direct to Open books were downloaded 176,300 times in 10 months. A few months ago, I alerted the members of this list to OpenStax <https://openstax.org/>, an educational technology nonprofit run out of Rice University, US and to the latest (10th) edition of the best selling chemistry textbook *Organic chemistry* by John McMurry being released as open access. Last year, Prof. Samiran Nundy, the renowned Gastro surgeon and Dean of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi made the book *How to Practice Academic Medicine and Publish from Developing Countries? - A practical guide* by Samiran Nundy <https://www.google.co.in/search?tbo=p&tbm=bks&q=inauthor:%22Samiran+Nundy%2…> , Atul Kakar <https://www.google.co.in/search?tbo=p&tbm=bks&q=inauthor:%22Atul+Kakar%22&s…> , Zulfiqar A. Bhutta <https://www.google.co.in/search?tbo=p&tbm=bks&q=inauthor:%22Zulfiqar+A.+Bhu…> openly accessible to users in South Asia. Why can't higher educational institutions in India embark on publishing open access books? Librarians and information scientists may try to convince their vice chancellors/directors/deans to think about it. You may also take it up with the UGC and the Ministries of Higher Education and Science and Technology. There are many in India who can write excellent textbooks for all levels With warm regards, Subbiah Arunachalam http://orcid.org/0000-0002-4398-4658 http://www.researcherid.com/rid/B-9925-2009 -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Share of OA in peer
by Subbiah Arunachalam 08 Nov '22

08 Nov '22

Dutch universities take another big step towards 100% Open Access 25 October 2022 Dutch universities published 82% of their peer-reviewed scientific publications Open Access in 2021. This is an increase of nine percentage points compared to 2020. For UU, the percentage is 80.7%. According to InCites (from Clarivate) less than 29% of papers published from India in the three years 2019-2021 are OA. We have a long way to go. If we want to move towards 100% OA, then our researchers should place their preprints in one of the tens of global preprint servers. For a list, please see https://doapr.coar-repositories.org/. Or they can place their postprints (immediately on acceptance by a journal) in an interoperable institutional repository (e.g. the one at ICRISAT, Hyderabad; and Eprints@CMFRI). *From: Katie Zimmerman* Hi CopyrightX Affiliates! I hope this finds you well. I wanted to reach out in case any of you work with libraries or cultural institutions who may be interested in the Libraries’ affiliate course. Ana and I are running the Libraries affiliate this year, and it is an entirely online course which is open (and free) to library, archives, and cultural institution staff anywhere in the world. My own channels for letting prospective students know about it are pretty US-centric, but I’d love to get broader participation, if there is interest. Librarians, archivists, and workers at cultural institutions are welcome to apply at this link (which also has more information about the course): https://forms.gle/q9H4JAeBoSVCU9J86. Please consider passing this along to any LAM colleagues, or let me know if you have suggestions for where I should promote it. Thank you! Hi Forum, We are making progress with the design and development of the integrated digital library framework. We would be interested to explore possible use cases you might have come across or you might wanted a digital library framework to have with the application of AI/ ML. In particular, we are considering the following use cases: 1. Recommendations of the related resources, based on users search and browsing history 2. Mention of resources published subsequently based on users search and browsing hustory 3. Suggestions of keywords (thesaurus) based on the search criteria, during submission of resources by the librarian in digital library Any other?
