Moorthy, former Director, DESIDOC, Delhi. On the occasion, Dr Justice Y. Bhaskara Rao, former Chief Justice of Karnataka, former Chairman, AP State Human Rights Commission and former Member, National Human Rights Commission and presently President, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (Hyderabad & Secunderabad) released the felicitation volume titled *Electronic Resources Management in Libraries* in the presence of Shri K. Narasimha, IPS, DIG (Retd) & former Chairman, AP Public Service Commission, Hyderabad and Dr S.S. Murthy, former Director, DESIDOC, DRDO, Delhi. Shri M Jagannadham, IAS, Jt Collector and Guest of Honour, Hyderabad could not attend the Meeting due to official exigencies. The function organised by Dr. A.L. Moorthy Felicitation Committee members and presided by Prof. L.S. Ramaiah, former University Librarian, CIEFL, Hyderabad was attended by more than 100 senior Library & Information Science (LIS) professionals. The book is edited by Dr CK Ramaiah, Professor & Head, Dept of LIS, Pondicherry University and published by Allied Publishers, Delhi. Dr A.L. Moorthy, rendered more than 33 years of service in Satish Dhawan Space Centre, ISRO, Srihari Kota, Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL), Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad and DESIDOC, Delhi (all DRDO) in various capacities. He superannuated on 30 June 2012 as Director, DESIDOC, Delhi. As mark of honour, some of his friends and well wishers brought out a Festschrift volume. Dr. A. L. Moorhty’s contributions to LIS profession are significant and noteworthy. He introduced many new services and innovative techniques for optimal utilization of information resources. He established digital libraries at DRDL and at DESIDOC. He created web-based and project oriented information services to all R&D scientists of DRDO through its intranet. He has guided the development of Library Automation Software, Database of Library Holdings and Union Catalogue of Periodical Holdings. He improved the quality, coverage, content and timely publication of periodicals both as Editor for a decade and as Editor-in-Chief. He was instrumental in starting new publications like Technology Focus, DRDO Monographs & Special Publications. He has initiated and realized DRDO Consortium for providing online access of over 550 R&D journals to all DRDO Labs. He established Knowledge Repository of DRDO Technical Reports and an Institutional Repository of papers published by DRDO scientists. Dr Justice Bhaskara Rao told that the volume contains 39 high quality papers written by experts from the field and the subject is highly relevant in the contemporary developments in the LIS field. He extensively quoted many Sanskrit *slokas* enunciating the value of education and Knowledge and the role of libraries in furthering them. Shri Narasimha mentioned that the research papers published in the volume covered various areas including digital resource management and intellectual property rights. He felt that R&D in the country is used for both human developments as well as for destruction like atomic bombs and emphasized LIS professionals to see that R&D should be used for Societal development. Dr SS Murthy recalled his association with and contributions made by Dr AL Moorthy who worked with passion but was strict disciplinarian which invited dissent from colleagues at times. Prof LS Ramaiah in his Presidential Address stressed the changing face of the libraries in the light of technologies, the importance of the electronic resources, opined that the book is a valuable addition to the knowledge and summed up the proceedings. This was followed by felicitation of DR AL Moorthy by the LIS professionals. Earlier Dr CK Ramaiah, Secretary, Dr. A.L. Moorthy Felicitation Committee welcomed the invitees. About the Speaker ============== Dr. Jeyakesavan Veerasamy (http://www.utdallas.edu/~jeyv/) works as Director of Senior Design program and also as Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Texas at Dallas, USA. He has worked in wireless telecom industry for 16 years (3 years in Nortel & 13 years in Samsung) and joined UT Dallas in Fall 2010 to focus more on teaching. He worked in wireless switch software in Nortel and focused on CDMA wireless air-interface in Samsung. Along with full-time job, he has taught a no. of online courses related to programming and software engineering for several US universities for 11 years. He is an Alumnus of UT Dallas and has done his MS & PhD in Computer Science. He has 12 publications in conferences/journals and four patents in telecom area. Bedbugs Found In U Of Washington Library Books

The Seattle Times Bedbugs hitching rides in books? Yep, and it's happening here. A New York Times piece about bedbugs and other crawly creatures showing up in library books says the problem is occurring across the country — including at the University of Washington. The article quotes Stephanie Lamson, head of preservation services at the University of Washington Libraries, saying she has put bug-infested books in plastic bags and then into freezers to kill the critters. Lamson said twice in August, circulation-desk employees at the UW Libraries saw insects crawling in returned books. She immediately put the books in a freezer in the natural-history museum, at temperatures of minus 18 degrees Fahrenheit. -- Warm regards. Google launches Dead Sea Scrolls online library More than six decades since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls - and thousands of years after they were written - Israel on Tuesday put 5,000 images of the ancient biblical artifacts online in a partnership with Google. The digital library contains the Book of Deuteronomy, which includes the second listing of the Ten Commandments, and a portion of the first chapter of the Book of Genesis, dated to the first century B.C. Israeli officials said this is part of an attempt by the custodians of the celebrated manuscripts - often criticized for allowing them to be monopolized by small circles of scholars - to make them broadly available. "Only five conservators worldwide are authorized to handle the Dead Sea Scrolls," said Shuka Dorfman, director of the Israel Antiquities Authority. "Now, everyone can touch the scroll on screen around the globe." Last year, Google partnered with the Israel Museum to put five scrolls online. Dead Sea scrolls go online The scrolls, considered one of the most significant archaeological finds of the 20th century, are thought to have been written or collected by an ascetic Jewish sect that fled Jerusalem to the desert 2,000 years ago and settled at Qumran, near the shore of the Dead Sea. The hundreds of manuscripts found in caves near the site have shed light on the development of the Hebrew Bible and the origins of Christianity. Google says the new digital library took two years to assemble, using technology first developed by NASA. The multimedia website allows users to zoom in on various fragments, with translations and Google maps alongside. Google hopes to further expand its project. Two months ago Google launched a "Cultural Institute," a digital visual archive of historical events in cooperation with 17 museums and institutes around the world. "We're working to bring important cultural and historical materials online and help preserve them for future generations," said Yossi Matias, head of Google's Research and Development Center in Israel. He just announced plans to dramatically expand the site's goals beyond just asking and answering questions, declaring in a blog post that he hoped to build "an Internet-scale Library of Alexandria." That's an implicit challenge to Google, which has long declared its mission to be "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." But D'Angelo noted in his post that the ""vast majority of human knowledge is still not on the Internet. Most of it is trapped in the form of experience in people's heads, or buried in books and papers that only experts can access." Besides asking and answering questions, Quora allows users to write posts about topics on boards, or topical discussion forums on the site. The University of Chicago and the University of Hawaii -- schools from Obama's home city and his birth state -- have expressed interest in hosting the library that will hold records from President Obama's administration. Every president since Herbert Hoover has sponsored a library; the George W. Bush library is scheduled to be dedicated next year in Dallas. The Chicago Tribune reports on the competition for the Obama facility: "The University of Hawaii, where the president's parents attended school, has made no secret of its campaign to lure the library to Honolulu. The Hawaii Legislature passed a resolution calling on Obama to choose the state for the library and a committee of government and civic leaders has been put in place to lobby for it. "The (University of Chicago), where Obama was a member of the law school faculty for 12 years, is widely considered the front-runner, though university officials have been tight-lipped about its efforts. However, officials at the National Archives and Records Administration, which administers 13 presidential libraries, confirmed that the U. of C. has expressed interest. "A U. of C. spokesman raised the possibility that a presidential library could be built off campus ... "Wherever it lands, it won't come cheap. (Bill) Clinton's library cost $165 million. The George W. Bush Foundation raised more than $300 million for his. A law passed by Congress in 2008 requires each president's foundation, which raises private money to build the library, to place 60 percent of the cost of the library in an endowment to offset the government's operating and maintenance costs once it opens.
