A new book on Scholarly Communication Librarianship and Open Knowledge
by Subbiah Arunachalam 14 Dec '23

14 Dec '23

Friends, Here is an open access book all of us can benefit from. Bonn_Bolick_Cross_ScholarlyCommunicationLibrarianship_2023.pdf (11.36Mb) <https://kuscholarworks.ku.edu/bitstream/handle/1808/34797/Bonn_Bolick_Cross…> . Published earlier this year, "*Scholarly Communication Librarianship and Open Knowledge* is an open access text to guide librarians, scholars and students interested in scholarly communications and open knowledge through theory, practice and case studies in the movement. Edited by Maria Bonn of the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, Josh Bolick of the University of Kansas and Will Cross of North Carolina State University, the book addresses issues in scholarly publishing and open knowledge movements," says Mike Krings of the University of Kansas News Service. See New book provides guide to librarians, scholars on open access, scholarly communication | The University of Kansas (ku.edu) <https://today.ku.edu/2023/10/23/new-book-provides-guide-librarians-scholars…> . I recommend the book to teachers and students of LIS, as well as scientists and scholars in other fields who want to keep abreast of developments in scholarly communication. About eighty authors from dozens of institutions have contributed chapters, and they have referred to many earlier sources. Individuals can download them, but it would be fair if institutional libraries bought physical copies from the publisher. With best wishes, Arun http://orcid.org/0000-0002-4398-4658

SoFerence is a leading biennial National Social Conference on Library & Information Science (LIS) organized by India’s largest Corporate Information Resource Centre from Tata Consultancy Services. This year, the 7th edition is scheduled on Saturday, 20th January 2024. The theme of SoFerence is “Transformation of Libraries: Design Thinking Way”. Libraries are continuously evolving in the fast-paced technological milieu, making it increasingly imperative for Libraries to reimagine its collection, services as well as infrastructure in the pursuit of aligning with New Normal. This year, in SoFerence, we will be conducting an in-person Design Thinking workshop for Library Professionals, focusing on live library problems. The takeaway from this workshop would be a practical understanding of the complete design thinking process with a tailormade roadmap for transforming your libraries. LibraryGPT: Inviting academic and private libraries to pilot
by Atanu Garai 11 Dec '23

11 Dec '23

Dear All, SocialWell is a data and content startup, bringing enterprise data and content management system, including digital library framework. We have developed and tested a LibraryGPT, a custom GPT model specific to library catalog, holding, and circulation data using college library datasets. We have used LibraryGPT on top of Koha ILMS. We are inviting interested academic and private libraries to join us for a month-long testing and evaluation to understand search behavior among the patrons using standard OPAC search compared to use of natural language-based search. Libraries should be using Koha and ideally have medium to high daily usage, e.g., 100 – 400 searches. We intend to work with 10 libraries in India. Best regards, Atanu Atanu Garai SocialWell w: www.socialwell.net<http://www.socialwell.net/>

The Dream of a Universal Library | Robert Darnton | The New York Review of Books
by madhan muthu 09 Dec '23

https://www.nybooks.com/articles/2023/12/21/the-dream-of-a-universal-librar… To be sure, the complex realities of technology, publishing, libraries, and authorship cannot be reduced to a Manichaean notion of progressives battling money-grubbers, because most of the participants in the knowledge industries pursue self-interest, whether it is profit or prestige. The recent history of academic books and journals shows how these interests have collided, driven by tectonic shifts in the global order of research and publication.

Words Algorithm Collection - finding closely related open access books using text mining techniques Open access platforms and retail websites are both trying to present the most relevant offerings to their patrons. Retail websites deploy recommender systems that collect data about their customers. These systems are successful but intrude on privacy. As an alternative, this paper presents an algorithm that uses text mining techniques to find the most important themes of an open access book or chapter. By locating other publications that share one or more of these themes, it is possible to recommend closely related books or chapters. -- https://liberquarterly.eu/article/view/10938 -- Madhan, M

IOP Publishing and the Manipal Academy of Higher Education have finalised a Read and Publish agreement
by Dr. J. K. Vijayakumar 01 Dec '23

01 Dec '23

IOP Publishing (IOPP) and the Manipal Academy of Higher Education have finalised a Read and Publish agreement as they work towards breaking down barriers to publishing open access (OA) for researchers from lower and lower middle-income countries. The unlimited OA agreement, which is one of IOP Publishing’s first in India, enables researchers affiliated with the Manipal Academy of Higher Education to publish all their research OA at no cost to them, making their scientific work permanently and freely available online for anyone to read. The agreement supports the growing appetite from researchers in India to publish their work OA. According to a global study of over 3,000 researchers carried out by IOPP with other society publishers, 62% of physical science researchers from India and Pakistan want to publish OA, but nearly 80% of respondents from these countries said a lack of funds are the main reason for not doing so. More details from https://ioppublishing.org/news/iop-publishing-and-manipal-academy-of-higher… MAHE has signed similar OA agreements with several International publishers. Congratulations to MAHE. forwarded by; Dr. J. K. Vijayakumar , Director Library Services & Professor American University of Antigua Antigua, West Indies www.auamed.org

*2023 WINTER SCHOOL: Information Ethics & Digital Wellness Toolkit (20th & 22th November 2023; 6AM to 9AM ET)* Registration is open for” I*nformation Ethics & Digital Wellness Toolkit”* on *20th & 22th November 2023; 6AM to 9AM ET* Please register here <https://associationforinformationscienceandtechnologyasist.growthzoneapp.co…>. The Zoom link will be sent 48-24 hours before the session. Few scholarships are also available. more details <https://www.asist.org/2023/10/10/winter-school/>. *Workshop Description* *The workshop is 6 hours and will be conducted over 2 days (**20th & 22nd November 2023; 6 AM to 9 AM ET**) with each session of 3 hours per day* Digital wellness refers to the notion of “being well in a digital society”. This is a very important consideration especially nowadays due to the prevalence of ICTs. Since ICTs permeate all sectors of society, a more user-friendly term was developed – Digital Wellness. Digital Wellness is characterized by the ability of the user to discern between the dangers and opportunities found in cyberspace, act responsibly, and align his/her online behavior with their offline values. It is wrong to assume that being digitally well is only applicable to adults who have extensive access to mobile devices and computers. Rather, this is of even more importance to children and young adults who are growing up using these devices either at home or at school or both. Following this need, nine books were developed by the ACEIE and the Information Science Department, in 2015 and 2016, in partnership with, inter alia, Intel Education, the UNESCO Information for All Programme (IFAP), the South African Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services (DTPS) and Department of Basic Education (DBE), addressing issues pertaining to Digital Wellness. The Digital Wellness Toolkit offers an easy-to-use format (printed and electronic books) and illustrative means to convey key concerns. *Instructor: **Naailah Parbhoo* *Naailah Parbhoo* is a full-time lecturer at the University of Pretoria, Department of Information Science. She lectures various modules varying from first year- Introduction to Information Communication Technologies, second year- Social and ethical impacts- information ethics, third year- competitive intelligence and honors- Organization, retrieval and seeking of information. From 2014, she was the junior research officer for the African Centre of Excellence for Information Ethics that is based in the Department of Information Science. In 2017, she became the office manager where she coordinated digital wellness workshops at National Health Insurance sites with the South African Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services. As for 2020, she became the ACEIE convenor. She is also a member of the following: *Gold Key, ASIS&T, ASIS&T African Chapter, SIG-III and LIASA.* Register here <https://associationforinformationscienceandtechnologyasist.growthzoneapp.co…> Best Regards, -- Regards, Leili Seifi, PhD Associate Professor Department of Knowledge & Information Science Faculty of Behavioral Science University of Birjand, Birjand, Iran Tel(Office): +98 56 31026855 https://cv.birjand.ac.ir/seifi/en -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
