Indian Statistical Institute Documentation Research and Training Centre Seminar-4 Geographical Information System and its Applications Abstract The data doesn't make much sense until it is spatially related to other data. Geographic Information System (GIS) is one such system that can put a spatial perspective to the collected data. GIS is a computer-based tool that analyzes, stores, manipulates and visualizes geographic information, usually on a map. Nevertheless, it is not just used for mapping but is also used for decision-making in urban planning, public health, crime pattern recognition, agriculture, and so forth. This seminar will discuss the history of GIS, its components, and the various GIS models. The seminar will brief the software used for analysing the data and the tools involved in mapping. The focus of the seminar will be on the application of these techniques in the fields of agriculture, astronomy, and public health. Bronze Award Winner: Shropshire LibrariesPicture This A creative innovative arts programme in libraries across Shropshire for young people aged 11-14yrs. In the 2 day workshops in the 6 main libraries, 60 young people developed original pieces of performance and set design. Performances in each library and a touring exhibition showcased what had been achieved. Bronze Award Winner: Staffordshire Library and Arts ServiceJ.R.R. Tolkien in Staffordshire – Touring Exhibition This project created a touring exhibition celebrating the importance of Staffordshire in the early life of J.R.R.Tolkien, in particular the influence of his time in the County on his early writings and development of Middle-earth. As far as I could understand, the author questions about availability of a similar platform like Netflix for academia where all the journal content providers put their content and let individuals subscribe and access the content. Netflix and other platforms came into existence due to the failure of earlier business model(outdated) of content distribution that was highly challenged by piracy. Also the consumers wanted to pay for only the content they really use. The author is inquisitive of, why academic content providers can't build such platforms and are still stuck to old business model of dissemination? The Oxford Dictionary’s selection of the term “Post-truth” as the word of the year in 2016 puts forward the need of questioning the accuracy of the information. Post-truth is defined as “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief” and can be effective in information dissemination processes, information seeking behaviors of individuals, production and use of information. Information management discipline has a very important function in terms of raising awareness of individuals for distinguishing the fake information and facts. For this reason, it is extremely important that the concept of “Post-truth” and its influences be discussed within the framework of the Information Management discipline and by its professionals. CONTRIBUTIONS Contributions can be theoretical as well as technical and practical. Informative case studies are also welcome. Contributions are not limited with the main theme: all types of papers, posters and presentations on information management in general are also welcome. The audience will be information professionals, data librarians, data curators, data managers, knowledge managers, researchers, information scientists, data scientists and computer engineers, among others. We accept extended abstracts (no less than 750 words) for full papers; short communications, Research in Progress reports, and posters on all aspects of Post-truth and also information management. Extended abstracts for student papers and posters are also welcome. Extended abstracts of PhD students to present the interim findings of their ongoing research will also be considered. Please use the template available on the Symposium web site soon to prepare your contributions and send them to us using the Conference Management Software (openconf) by 15 December, 2017.
