Dear professional colleagues, Before Individual campaigns, I feel it is the moral responsibility of ILA to inform its members about elections with list of candidates. Though I am a life member, I have not received any communication or ballot paper from ILA. Same status may be with many members. Even if a member is willing to vote, how can he do it without ballot paper?. My request to all candidates who are contesting for ILA elections…. Please make ILA as an organization to start communicating with its members about elections. Then canvassing from candidates or their supporters makes some sense. I trust members get a copy of ILA bulletin. Of late, I am not getting it though my address has not changed. I don’t know whether it is publishing or not. My effort to make ILA as very strong body like AMA, AOM, INFORMS etc.. in all directions to fight for profession, status, justice, high quality publications, financing research projects in LIS etc. for example, Journal of marketing, Academy of management review/journal, Management science etc are No.1. core journals from these associations. My request to all candidates independent of election result: 1. Make ILA a professionally and politically very strong body to fight for profession. 2. Publish high quality journals for all type of libraries. The papers should go through rigourous review and plagiarism checks. 3. Work as nodal/central body for IT/services requests in libraries. 4. Organize in-depth High-quality purpose –oriented training workshops on library functions. ( not just a gathering, should be result-oriented) 5. Nodal counselling/advisory centre for library related problems. 6. It should work as repository of Govt circulars/notifications/orders to help library professional who need such document support for his/her career progress or promotion. From decades, I am requesting and sending repeat mails to make ILA a strong body for library profession. Unlike other library associations, ILA includes all type of libraries. Dear Friends, This is my personal experience during conversation with professionals regarding library automation and data migration. Many of us are struggling with data migration and consider this as a big challenge. Friends, I wish to convince you that data migration is not as difficult as we are making it. It is very simple process except few cases where we are not having the provision of exporting data in excel or Marc. Whatever system you are working, it does not matter. If you wish to switch over to any other ILMS then only you have to pull your data either in excel or Marc format or ISO format (if possible) then purify your data and make it compatible with your chosen software. Here are few videos which may help you to understand the process of data migration. Please have a blank data sheet with few data in it and practice 2-3 times and you will become master in it. We are glad to inform you that the Central Library, IIT Bombay is organizing one day workshop on *'Innovative Information Literacy: active learning and engaging pedagogies’ *on 8th March, 2019(Friday). Despite user’s’ wide use of Google Scholar and search engines, in order to succeed in developing critical thinking skills such as analysis and evaluation, not only in school/university but in the workplace our users need to learn about digital literacies. IL training is necessary for Librarians so as to improve library users abilities to transfer more effectively into professional work environments to become lifelong learners and get meaningful professional work, students need not only to learn IL, but also retain critical thinking skills (IL). Studies show that students retain critical thinking skills most effectively when engaging in active learning exercises. This workshop will highlight effective ways librarians can engage students in information literacy training through interactive and innovative activities. *About the Workshop Resource Persons: * *1. Aditi Gupta * Aditi Gupta is the Learning & Research Librarian: Engineering & Science, Mearns Centre for Learning - McPherson Library and she has worked in libraries for the past 12 years. She is the recipient of the ALA Diversity Research Grant for her study titled “Exploring library perceptions, reading habits and library usage of the South Asian population in BC”. She has served as the Chair for the CLA Research & Development Grants Jury and is a current member of the American Library Association, American College of Research Libraries and the American Society of Engineering Education – Engineering Libraries Division. Aditi has attended the Librarians Research institute and collaborated and presented at a number of national and international library conferences. Does the provision of Incremental Fine fulfill the Five Laws of Library Science? Five Laws of Library Science enunciated by Dr. S. R. Ranganathan says that 1. Books are for use. 2. Every Book Its reader 3. Every reader his/her book 4. Save the time of Reader 5. Library is a growing organism We the Library Professionals value the above laws to great extent in libraries and try to maximum implement in all aspects but when it comes to Incremental Fine, it raises many questions and in the queue of questions, first question is “Does the provision of incremental fine fulfill the five laws?” Question seems very simple and many of us may say “YES” but some of us may also say “NO” and I am one of NO category. The provision of Incremental Fine creates burden for library users and get pressure from library to return the book on time else s/he will have to pay compulsorily the fine amount next to normal fine as per rule of incremental fine. But, why a user should pay extra amount? Here above laws of library science seems violated. Whey we say Books are for use, Every book it’s reader, Every reader his/her then why libraries are imposing extra fine. If the libraries have to get the book back, they may easily RECALL book or block the user so that s/he will not be eligible to avail services as punishment for violating the rule of not returning the book on time but collecting the extra charges from library users seems like ‘library considers incremental fine as source of revenue’ As a result, this provision may kill the interest of library patron and next time, perhaps s/he may not will to issue any book from library. Perhaps, library may lose the patron interest for visiting library too next time and forever. This may also lead to pass the information by that user to other library users about the negative aspects and as a fear, the other users may stop utilizing the issue/return service of library My question is – “Is it compulsory to impose extra amount, in case user does not return book?” If s/he is not returning book, let the normal fine be imposed as per library policy? Except understanding that they are having some different skin than Indians? Try to make webometrics study between these invited persons and organisers, in many cases you will find some mutual relationship between them either directly or indirectly. Most of the cases they are doing and managing the same what was passed by their ancestors like us in profession. I don't have much experience on physically visiting abroad but interacting a lot with many professionals abroad online and sharing our knowledge. I feel we have the same potentials as they have but it's a matter of proper utilisations. The American Library Association is now accepting applications for the Robert L. Oakley Memorial Copyright Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to an individual or a team of individuals who meet eligibility criteria. ALA and the Library Copyright Alliance established the Robert L. Oakley Memorial Scholarship to support research and advanced study for librarians in their early-to-mid-careers who are interested and/or active in the fields that Robert Oakley was expert in: intellectual property, public policy, copyright and their impacts on libraries and the ways libraries serve their communities. The scholarship aims to encourage and expand interest in and knowledge of these aspects of librarianship. The scholarship may be used for equipment, expendable supplies, travel necessary to conduct, attend conferences, release from library duties or other reasonable and appropriate research expenses. Applicants must demonstrate interest in or be professional actively in copyright and public policy and their impacts on libraries and the ways libraries serve their communities. Highest consideration will be given to applicants who are librarian(s) in their early-to-mid-careers. Dear Prof. Khaiser Jahan Begam, The question that you have raised about the grouping of our decipline (LIS) in a university set up is quite interesting. Also, the fact that the library professionals who are known primarily for their organising skills, are still struggling to classify their own subject (LIS) in the universe of knowledge, is equally interesting. As we all know, the LIS is a multidisciplinary subject that derives theories, concepts, methods and tools from various other disciplines to organise the knowledge properly. We extensively use the 'technology' to make our work of organising the knowlege systematically and to provide an easy and quick access to it for the benefit of our users. But, the extensive use of technology cannot be a ground to place the LIS under the ' Faculty of Technology'. We always use scientific methods to study the information needs of our users and adopt scientific approach to organise and manage the collection of information resources. But this will not support our decision to place the LIS under the ' Faculty of Science'. The ultimate aim of our profession is to provide right information to the right person at the right time in order to help him contribute to the development of the society. Hence, the only 'right' place to categorise the LIS would be the 'Faculty of Social Sciences' . A majority of the universities have already done this. These are my personal views.
