The workshops will be led by senior academics from India, USA and UK, and with the aim of supporting Indian early career researchers (late-stage doctoral students and junior faculty) to develop high quality international English-language publications. The workshops will be led by Professor Usha Raman (University of Hyderabad), Associate Professor Vibodh Parthasarathi (Jamia Millia Islamia), Professor Emily Keightley (Loughborough University), Professor Aswin Punathambekar (University of Virginia), and Professor John Downey (Loughborough University). The workshops will also be supported by a research development manager at Loughborough University, who will share grant writing skills. The workshops are appropriate for early career researchers approaching completion of their doctoral studies, post-doctoral researchers, and junior faculty (up to 5 years post award of PhD). We anticipate that applicants will not have an already well-established record of research publications in international journals. There will be three workshops held in week commencing September 20th 2021, week commencing December 6th 2021, and week commencing March 7th 2022 (precise dates to be confirmed). It is anticipated that the first workshop will be online and will comprise four three-hour sessions held over four days. We envisage that the second and third workshops will be held in India in-person but this is dependent upon the global pandemic situation. Where workshops are held in-person the costs of necessary travel, accommodation, and subsistence will be met. We require accepted participants to attend all workshop sessions. The application form includes requires applicants to complete a 500 word statement explaining why they wish to participate in the workshops, and requires the attachment of two additional documents: a CV of no more than two pages including a list of any publications, and a sample of writing of between 5000 and 6000 words (this could be a draft journal article or a chapter from your PhD thesis). To: Indian Library Association Considering the Historicity of Librariesand library services to the community, the ILA should file a PIL in Supreme Courtand here is a small write on the reason for such an act. As aLife Member of ILA for more than 40 years in standing and as President ofKarnataka State Library Association, I am making this proposal to ILA. As all of us know that the Library has been becoming the most neglectedinstitution under the policies of the Government both at the Central and Statelevel. It is well known that several commissions on education and others have emphasized therole of library and about 21 states of India have public library legislationand many of these Library acts have mandated to provide public library servicesto the citizens and some of them are also levying Library Cess. Most theUniversities in the country are without bare minimum qualified library staff and some of them are being managed by Only oneprofessionals wherein their earlier strength was anywhere between 20-60. IITsand Institutions of national importance, many public libraries in the countryare without staff. In the country there are nearly 200+Universities offering LIS education from Certificate to Doctorate levels,Thousands of youngsters are passing out of these valued Institutions which have a history of nearly 75 years instanding. They also are working without adequate teaching faculty and some ofthem on the threshold of closing. In comparison in the west and also in manydeveloping nations from Africa and South East Asia except India, Library andlibrary profession is regarded as one of the essential services. Despite application of ICT in Libraryoperations and services many libraries in the west are appoint specialists indifferent areas of application of ICT in libraries to make library servicesmore effective and fruitful. Considering such and all other aspects thereis a very strong case to file a Public Interest Litigation in the Supreme Court to enlighten thegovernments both Central and State to take immediate action on improving thelibrary situations all over the country as the libraries since ages are considered asinstitutions to cater to the public needs of education, learning, teaching,research and for the leisure time activity. IndianLibrary Association being a national professionalbody should consult the concerned in this regard and go for filing a PIL and also seek the Parliament to bringa WHITE PAPER on all aspects of library situationsand condition. While the utilitarian theory and the social planning theory build their theoretical explanations on the notion of maximization of social welfare through diverging on how they each define "welfare." The labor-desert theory and the personality theory form the Rights-based theories and justify copyright as a "natural right" given to the creator of copyright material. The norms of "the Republic of Science" are famously articulated by Robert Merton and compactly summarized by the mnemonic "CUDOS": Communalism, Universalism, Disinterestedness, Originality, and Skepticism. These CUDOS norms not only dovetail with Popper's ideal of Open Society but are intrinsic to the scientific enterprise. Scientific or scholarly information exhibits the two cardinal characteristics of Public Good*non-excludable and non-rivalrous. From an economic point of view, scientific products are essentially public goods, and from a sociological point of view, scientific research is a product of social collaboration, and its ownership belongs to the community. Asserting that production of scientific knowledge does not belong to the "natural right" category, and the public good is social welfare, I argue that it is time to revisit the copyright issue and turn it on its head. We need to reframe the copyright theories in the context of CUDOS norms and the principle that knowledge is a non-excludable and non-rivalrous commodity. About Dr Shalini Urs Dr Shalini R Urs is an internationally recognized academic who began her career in academia 44 years back, joining the University of Mysore as a lecturer in the Department of Library and Information Science in 1976. She is an institution builder whose brainchild is the MYRA School of Business (www.myra.ac.in), which she founded in 2012. She also founded the International School of Information Management (www.isim.ac.in) -- the first Information School in India, as an autonomous constituent unit of the University of Mysore in 2005. She is currently involved with Gooru India Foundation as a Board member (https://gooru.org/) and is actively involved in the implementation of the Gooru Learning Platform in India and building the Indian Learning Collective. She has served as a UNESCO expert on several occasions and was commissioned to conduct many studies in the last twenty years. Her contributions have won her several awards. With decades of experience in academia and educational entrepreneurship, she initiated many innovative programmes, founded the International School of Information Management in 2005 and the MYRA School of Business in 2012. While the utilitarian theory and the social planning theory build their theoretical explanations on the notion of maximization of social welfare through diverging on how they each define "welfare." The labor-desert theory and the personality theory form the Rights-based theories and justify copyright as a "natural right" given to the creator of copyright material. The norms of "the Republic of Science" are famously articulated by Robert Merton and compactly summarized by the mnemonic "CUDOS": Communalism, Universalism, Disinterestedness, Originality, and Skepticism. These CUDOS norms not only dovetail with Popper's ideal of Open Society but are intrinsic to the scientific enterprise. Scientific or scholarly information exhibits the two cardinal characteristics of Public Good*non-excludable and non-rivalrous. From an economic point of view, scientific products are essentially public goods, and from a sociological point of view, scientific research is a product of social collaboration, and its ownership belongs to the community. Asserting that production of scientific knowledge does not belong to the "natural right" category, and the public good is social welfare, I argue that it is time to revisit the copyright issue and turn it on its head. We need to reframe the copyright theories in the context of CUDOS norms and the principle that knowledge is a non-excludable and non-rivalrous commodity. About Dr Shalini Urs Dr Shalini R Urs is an internationally recognized academic who began her career in academia 44 years back, joining the University of Mysore as a lecturer in the Department of Library and Information Science in 1976. She is an institution builder whose brainchild is the MYRA School of Business (http://www.myra.ac.in), which she founded in 2012. She also founded the International School of Information Management (http://www.isim.ac.in/) -- the first Information School in India, as an autonomous constituent unit of the University of Mysore in 2005. Dear Mr. Manoj, If you are using koha and also the books are barcoded then your work will become quite easy to complete stock verification. I will suggest you to follow the below process to find the exact records missing and complete the verification. First - Take any laptop and attach the barcode reader with it. Second - Ask your staff on a rotation basis to scan the barcodes in excel sheets i.e. *stock verification.* Third - Once the scanning of all books is completed, you will have the list of all physical books available with you. Fourth - Now, you have to check the items issued in koha. Pull the reports of all issued books and also the list of other books with status (damaged, write off etc.) and add these accession numbers to your* stock verification excel list. * Fifth - Now you will have a complete list of verified books. *Here your actual job starts to find the missing books. * 1. First, you pull the complete accession numbers list from koha in the excel file. Ensure, your accession numbers are in *COLUMN A* 2. Secondly, copy the accession numbers from your stock verification excel sheet and paste it in the first excel sheet (pulled from koha) in *COLUMN C* to match the records and find the missing. 3. Now, you have to add the formula in the *COLUMN B. * *= vlookup(A1,C:C,1,FALSE)* 4. It will match column A to column C and show the result in *COLUMN **B*. Here, the records which are not found will show #NA. 5. Just, filter it and this is your missing list. 6. Ask the staff to search it again. If found good else* "YOUR STOCK VERIFICATION LIST is WITH YOU"* Hope it helps you to complete stock verification. Here is the text of an appeal for your reference. *__________________________________________________* *An Appeal to the Honourable Prime Minister of India* *Sub: Relocation of the GOI Libraries to the New Secretariat Complex, Central Vista * Sir, We understand that the Government of India is planning to construct a new secretariat complex to house the various ministries that are presently scattered in different buildings like Krishi Bhawan, Udyog Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, Shastri Bhavan etc. All these building as well as the National Archives Annexe, IGNCA and National Museum host libraries and cultural artefacts We, the members of the Library and Information Service (LIS) profession and Indian Heritage lovers, are immensely concerned about the relocation, reorganisation and conservation/preservation of the cultural heritage and books housed in libraries of these buildings. For instance, the Central Secretariat Library (CSL) in Shastri Bhawan is the second largest government library with more than one million volumes. The National Archives (Annexe) has the largest collection of old government records. IGNCA has more than 200,000 manuscripts collected under the National Mission for Manuscripts initiated by the earlier NDA government. We earnestly appeal to you to take appropriate measures for proper relocation and upkeep of our precious heritage material. This will need suitable and accessible space for reorganising these cultural heritage for posterity. There will be a need for adoption of international standards for conservation/preservation of these materials; creation of appropriate climate controlled space for the artefacts and rare books. It is essential to have trained manpower to maintain and to provide service to the prospective users. We suggest that a task force may be constituted by the government comprising academicians, library professionals, archivists, museum curators/conservationists and Indian heritage lovers for meticulous planning and execution as we have to reckon with a task of enormous magnitude. We all hope that necessary steps will be taken by the Government of India so that we do not lose even a minuscule of our rich heritage. DSpace 7.0 will be released on/by Monday, August 2, 2021! This release finally brings together two user interfaces and their communities, who had previously been working in parallel. The ambition is to bring together the best of both JSPUI and XMLUI worlds, meaning that all features are re-imagined, and re-implemented on a single new user interface technology, Angular. This new UI is backed by a brand new REST API, which opens all data & features to the web, allowing DSpace to integrate or interact with external systems/services like never before. The switch to Angular also allows for more rapid innovation. Angular has the potential to attract developers with prior expertise, given the popularity and global traction of Angular across industries. What will be included in DSpace 7.0? The efforts contributed to DSpace 7 are the largest endeavour ever undertaken by the DSpace community. The DSpace 7.0 release will concentrate on the following major features: A new User Interface based on Angular (to replace XMLUI and JSPUI). This work is going on in the "main" branch of https://github.com/DSpace/dspace-angular An exhaustive list of all major features already in 7.0 can be found in the 7.0 Release Notes (for each Beta). A refactored/enhanced REST API (using modern REST best practices). This work is going on in the "main" branch of https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace Additionally, a new REST Contract (describing all API interactions) is being written at https://github.com/DSpace/RestContract Redesigned submissions and workflows featuring a one page submission process with a drag-and-drop interface and newly redesigned MyDSpace. Dear Scholars Cultural heritage connects people to social and cultural values, customs, beliefs, religions, and the knowledge generated by our forefathers in different spheres of activity including science and technology; accumulated through centuries which we need to sustain and transfer to future generations. Informatics can provide innovative tools and technologies for management of heritage assets and knowledge embedded in them for dissemination in society. Informatics Studies proposes to bring out a special volume on Cultural Heritage Information System (CHIS) in October 2021. The volume will give stress to various aspects of cultural heritage information systems including digitization tools and technologies, retrieval mechanisms, metadata and indexing, policy issues, standards and guidelines, semantic and ontological frameworks and the best practices and case studies pertaining to CHIS.
