Earlier this year, architectural startup Branch Technology developed a prototype of a 1,000-square-foot 3D home that would cost around $300,000 - a price that's too high to be considered a solution to the global housing crisis. That's all about to change thanks to a collaboration between New Story, a San Francisco-based housing nonprofit, and ICON, a construction technology company that designs 3D printers. In March, the companies unveiled the first permitted, 3D printed home in America: a 350-square-foot structure that costs around $10,000 and took just 48 hours to build. At the time, the printer - known as the Vulcan - was only running at 25% speed. This gives the companies confidence that they can build a 600- to 800-square-foot home in just 24 hours for a price tag of $4,000 or less. Prior to using 3D technology, it took New Story eight months to build 100 homes, which each cost around $6,000. TerraPower believes the design will be safer and more efficient than today's reactors. - Gates has supported nuclear energy projects for several years, hoping that improvements in the technology can help curb the effects of climate change. - A new laboratory is slated to open next year, and TerraPower chief technology officer John Gilleland said the company plans on having a prototype reactor ready in about 10 years. Bill Gates sees nuclear energy as a potential solution to lowering carbon dioxide emissions around the world, and he has spent the past decade funding new ways to produce the energy in a safe, affordable way. The Declaration The declaration affirms the Parliamentarians’ commitment to the principles of transparency, accountability and the protection of representative democracy in regard to the internet. The declaration will evolve over time as the International Grand Committee meets again and makes further progress on the issues of disinformation and ‘fake news’. One of the world’s most venerable business organizations is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, and the challenges it faces today are the same, in many ways, as those it faced at its beginnings. Then, its entrepreneurial founder started businesses across a variety of emerging industrial sectors; now, the group includes a diverse portfolio of companies, 30 of which are publicly listed, under a single holding company — Tata Sons — headquartered in Mumbai. From its Indian roots, Tata has evolved into a global powerhouse in multiple industries, with two main goals. On the one hand, it is fiercely oriented toward shareholder value: It has an aggregate market capitalization of more than US$160 billion and 4 million shareholders. On the other, it is a community-oriented company, with more than 60 percent of shares held by a set of philanthropic trusts that fund health, education, and development in the communities where it conducts business. Keeping these two goals in harmony in an age of technological disruption is the chairman of Tata Sons, Natarajan Chandrasekaran. In July 2018, Tata’s Mumbai headquarters, known as Bombay House, reopened following a year of major modernizing renovations. That week, Chandra sat down with strategy+business in his Mumbai office. We asked him first about his priorities for Tata, and then about the two futures in which the company will play a pivotal role: that of India in particular, and that of the global economy in general. There are algorithms that win human debates, book dinners, eliminate checkout lines, tend gardens, spot plumbing leaks, and call for help when we trip and fall. But the machines aren’t completely taking over just yet. There’s at least one thing we’re sure even the savviest silicone noggin can’t do: put together Popular Science’s annual list of the year’s most pivotal, influential, and just plain awesome innovations. The 31st annual Best of What’s New list is the culmination of a year spent obsessing over, arguing about, and experiencing the newest technologies and discoveries across 10 distinct disciplines. Full Post <https://www.popsci.com/best-of-whats-new-2018> *Five Overlooked Principles Shaping the Destiny of Your Business* Until you grasp Turing’s theory of computability, Coase theorem of transaction costs, Bell’s law of computer classes, Baldwin and Clarke’s concept of modularity, and Nakamoto’s law of the distributed ledger, you’re not prepared to lead a digital company. The most important changes are often the least obvious. That’s especially true in business, where changes are taking place on a greater scale than ever before. The advent of digital technology has brought a number of these dynamics to the forefront. They can be thought of as principles. Like Moore’s law or Murphy’s law, they explain the way the world works. If you’re in business in the 2010s, an understanding of these five principles is crucial, because digital disruption is quickly becoming the new normal. Many growth strategies that may have worked well in the past no longer pack a punch. The principles help explain not just what will happen to your company next, but why. Here’s a look at some of the smartest sustainable products of the year, from greener shoes to smarter thermostats. (Of course, some would say the most sustainable approach would be to use or reuse the products you already have.) It’s highly profitable, highly disruptive, and hard to police due to the transnational nature of cyberspace. Incidences of cyber crime might include fraud, identity theft or privacy breaches, which can have a high personal impact. Ransomware, which locks a system and demands payment, can have widespread economic or healthcare implications. In the past year, 25% of the Australian adult population was impacted by cyber crime. If we want a robust and resilient society, we need cybersecurity professionals defending every organisation from cyber attack. Cybersecurity professionals might work in software development, network testing, incident response, or policy development to ensure the security of an organisation. In popular culture, these experts are often portrayed as lone hackers in hoodies. But in reality, cybersecurity professionals must regularly communicate with a variety of audiences. They must also display a high degree of personal integrity.
