EAS systems - Library Security
by gayathri sen 29 May '06

Dear Friends, Ours was the first library in Karnataka and Second in our country after IUCCA, Pune to install EAS Security System in Libraries. US consulate had this for other purpose and not for its library. My experience: 1. Not very reliable 2. Return on Investment not good 3. Service is poor. We bought it from Monitor Electronics, Pune but the product was imported. They did not have office in Bangalore and every time we had to bear their conveyence charge plus repair charge whcih worked out to be too expensive in the long run. 4.Service was not immediate because they had to come from Pune. 5. Product acts only as deterrant for stealing, but total loss cannot be prevented. 6. Too many false alarms. 7. Adds only value but not a must buy. 8. You can buy it if you have too much finance to spend, or to show off to others and say you have a very modern library. 9. Newer versions may be slightly bettter. 10. Right now we have stopped depending on this. Regards, Gayathri Sen PESIT-Engineering College --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Get on board. You're invited to try the new Yahoo! Re: [LIS-Forum] Open Access Journals?
by Sukhdev Singh 29 May '06

Interesting document by Thomson Scientific, Thanks Venkatesh for sharing it with the group. The following para is worth noting: "The evolving environment of scholarly publishing includes additional avenues for making content openly available. Our findings suggest that over 55% of the journals and over 65% of the articles indexed in Web of Science in 2003 are produced by publishers who permit some form of self-archiving, and could be made OA by author archiving." The data studied in the document is of 2003. I hope the figure (65%) of the articles indexed in Web of Science that can be self-archived by authors might have improved by now. According to ROMEO Project < http://romeo.eprints.org/stats.php > 93% of the journals surveyed by them allow some form of author archiving. Even if we go by the Web of Science 2003 figures, it can be concluded that 65% of the best articles can be made OA by self-archiving. And the beauty is that it does not matter where on the earth these are archived, OAI-PMH protocol will ensure their universal discovery and access. Just like libraries are essential for teaching / research institutes - OA Repositories should also be must to reflect institutional / country's intellectual output. Yes - OA Repositories are no substitute to journals - but stores them - just like libraries hold books / journals. Now, let us decide what we should be doing in this matter? --Sukhdev Singh, NIC. http://openmed.nic.in On 26/05/06, LS Venkatesh <venkatesh(a)edutech.com> wrote: > > Dear friends: > > While on the subject of OA journals, I thought that those who are interested in this topic will find the white paper on "The Impact of Open Access Journals" by Thomson Scientific very useful. Homeopathic drugs to preserve books, manuscripts!
by Krishna Maraddi 29 May '06

Dear All, Please go through this article. Homeopathic drugs to preserve books, manuscripts! 4 4 Certain homeopathic medicines are useful to prevent & remove fungus in books and manuscripts 4 4 The basic properties of the paper would remain unchanged after the treatment by homeopathic drugs 4 4 Sulphar Iodatum, Petrolim, Arsenicum and Rumux in different potencies are found to be most effective in the treatment of books and manuscripts After proven efficacy on human beings, homeopathy medicines can now be used to prevent fungal growth in books, old documents and manuscripts -- a breakthrough research says. In the first of its kind study, scientists at National Research Laboratory for Conservation of Cultural Property (NRLC) have found that certain homeopathic medicines are useful to prevent and remove fungus in books and manuscripts. Following over-a-decade of reaserch in this regard, certain medicnies had been successfully tested and found to be extremely useful in treating the fungus on the books, NRLC scientist Dr Shashi Dhawan along with Dr K L Garg, who achieved the breakthrough said. The paper division of the Lab also studied the physico-chemical properties of the paper and found that the basic properties of the paper would remain unchanged after the treatment by homeopathic drugs, Dr Dhawan said. NRLC, which is engaged in preservation and conservation of historical and heritage buildings through its expertise is venturing into preservation of documents and manuscripts for the first time. Various drugs were tested during the course of research which had started in 1995. Sulphar Iodatum, Petrolim, Arsenicum and Rumux in different potencies were found to be most effective in the treatment of books and manuscripts, Dr Dhawan, the Head of Bio-deterioration Division of the NRLC, said. She said the findings had already been published and well received everywhere. Earlier, the fungus on books and manuscripts was treated successfully by NRLC scientists through chemicals but homeopathic medicines were environment-friendly and not harmful in any way, she said in reply to a query. Homeopathic medicines are environment-friendly, non-hazardous and without side effects in human beings, books and manuscripts will also have no bearings of this off-beat treatment, the scientists claimed. Dr Dhawan said the application of homeophatic medicinies was done on plants but its use on books and manuscripts was being tried for the first time. Tropical and sub-tropical countries like India, where humid weather prevails, the attack of fungus on books is more prevalent. This breakthrough research would go a long way in treatment of books and manuscripts. Yours Krishna Maraddi Librarian SKSVM Agadi college of Engg. & Tech. Exemption from NET
by Lavji N. Zala 29 May '06

29 May '06

Dear LIS-Forum Colleagues, The decision taken by UGC to give exemption to the M.Phil and Ph.D. Holders form net is not fair. It is just like, IIMs and IITs offer admissions without CAT. Feel, what happens if this type of situation may be imposed in the education sector? Testing to the aspirants through the national or international standards (NET, CAT, IEEE, GMAT, TOEFL, PMT and so on.), is essential to produce qualitative and intellectual (because the competitive exams always test the aspirants at maximum aspects of intellectuality) persons rather than concentrate on quantity. Why the students from self financed management institutes (who offer admission without any national entrance test and believe in quantity) do not steps with the students of other institutes (who believe in quality and test the knowledge of aspirants through the national standards /entrance exams) in context to knowledge, innovation, self - determination and so on. Quality gives you assurance. There may many alternatives of quality but the alternatives will affect the national standards (standardization) and education system and create double standard system. I do not believe that the M.Phil and Ph.D holders have not capacity, however they have to pass through the national test and prove them as NET holders. They are very experienced persons in context to teaching but the at the other side the person having plenty of experience and knowledge in concerned filed but without having degree S/he may not be eligible for concerned field. This decision will create chaos in the standardization of aspirants. The nation can achieve the vision corruption-free India in education if it doesnt allow the chance for thinking towards DOUBLE-STANDARD but think of ONLY ONE STANDARD THAT IS CALLED NET/SLET. FYI: I have been trying to be a NET Holder since 2000 but I have not cleared it till date. regards, Lavji N.
