Sad Demise of Eugene Garfield

Dear Sir, It is very sad to learnthat the pioneer of citation indexing Dr. Eugene Garfield is no more. His visionary product citation indexing databaseScience Citation Index (SCI) has altered the research landscape forever. Today Web of Science (WoS)has become synonym with quantitative measurement of scholarly publications. Itwas always pleasure to put hands on Eugene’s erstwhile print publications CurrentContents. Way back in 2002 and 2003 I had seen professors and researchers desperatelylooking for Current Contents in Mysore University Library and note down bibliographicalentries of to be published research articles in their area of expertise. Thoughhe was graduated in Chemistry, because of his love for library Science, he obtaineda degree in LIS. Dr. Eugene Garfield wrote series of article on our great legendaryLIS scientist Dr. S.R. Ranganathan. His column “Essays of an InformationScientist” gives us whole gamut of growth of world science literature. His legacy will continue with his pioneering work inthe field of citation indexing. Theworld LIS fraternity will surely miss him. In 2010 on the 85th birth anniversary ofEugene Garfield the Annals of Library and Information Studies brought out aspecial issue as a tribute to his path breaking work in the field ofscientometrics. Dear Sir Kindly forward the below report to the forum members. *Role of LIS Professionals in the Changing Academic Paradigm: Report of the Conference held on Feb 17-18, 2017* Two days National Conference on the Role of LIS Professionals in the Changing Academic Paradigm was organized by the Presidency University on Feb 17-18, 2017. The conference was held at Hotel Radisson Blu Atria, Palace Road, Bengaluru. There were 150 delegates from different parts of India which included librarians, students of library science schools, publishers, IT professionals, knowledge management experts and university teachers. He was recently fitted with a pacemaker and was in a rehab place to gain strength before he came home on Wednesday, March 1. Unfortunately he fell and hit his head causing massive bleeding in the brain, as he was on a blood thinner. It is with great regret we learn about the passing away of Dr. Eugene Garfield, the legendary Information Scientist on 26th February 2017. A message received from Mrs.Garfield informs "It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform all our friends that our wonderful Gene died on February 26, 2017............." "Dr. Eugene Garfield is the founder of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) and a pioneer in the field of citation analysis. Garfield studied at the University of Colorado and Berkeley before getting a degree in chemistry from Columbia University in 1948. During the early 1950s he worked on the Welch Library indexing project at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine, sorting and indexing documents from medical papers and journals. With a graduate degree in library sciences from Columbia University, Garfield went into business as a "documentation consultant" while working on his doctorate in structural linguistics. He founded the ISI in 1960 and developed an indexing system for science literature, based on the analysis of citations used within a given work. Works earn an "impact factor," a measure of citations to other science journals that serves as an indicator of their importance in the field. The more citations in reputable journals, the higher the impact factor. The ISI sold subscriptions to their publication the Science Citation Index, and over time grew to include the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI). These databases now form the foundation of the online research tool called the Web of Knowledge<http://scientific.thomson.com/webofknowledge/>. Garfield also served as an adjunct professor of computer and information science at University of Pennsylvania during his career, and in 1986 launched The Scientist, a magazine for science researchers. Friends, Scientometrics Pioneer, Dr Eugene Garfield passed away on 26 February 2017 at the age 91. Contributions of Garfield to the 'World of science' are immense. It is a great loss to the library and information science profession and the entire world of science community. His theories and concepts were discussed and debated across the world by the scientific community. Garfield founded the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) in 1955. Dear Colleagues, Eugene Garfield, an innovative scientist and the founding father of Web of Science passed away on February 26, 2017 in Pennsylvania. He founded the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI, Philadelphia) and launched the field of Citation analysis. He was a celebrated author, great human being, and remarkably contributed pioneering works in the field of Scientometrics. We should pay regards to his tireless works and his foundational contributions to the field. It’s a great loss for all of us. A memorial and other means of honoring Garfield’s legacy are forthcoming.
