CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT Society for Library Professionals (SLP) & University of Delhi South Campus in Association with Special Libraries Association, Asian Chapter are pleased to announce two- day Library and Information Professionals Summit (LIPS) 2014 “From Brick to Click: Transforming Libraries into Social Spaces” on Friday-Saturday, 7-8 February 2014 at New Delhi, India Conference Theme : With the emergence of distributed forms of information in a double click environment, the role of physical libraries have changed considerably over the last ten years, to reflect changes in the nature of education. The importance of collaboration, group work and communication in teaching and learning are widely recognised and the central role of the library as a repository of facts and information is changing. While it is still important to have this kind of resource, it has proven to be a diminishing draw in terms of library traffic. The notion of transforming libraries into social and cultural spaces is an expansive role for the future library not only serving as an information resource, but much more, with the exact mission and goals evolving and changing over time. A culture-based library is one that taps into the spirit of the community, assessing priorities and providing resources to support the things deemed most important. Libraries are in a unique position to experiment with creative spaces so the future role of the library can define itself. Since the role of the library 20 years from now is still a mystery, libraries need to put their heads together to scratch the surface of many more changes to come and determine what ideas are drawing attention and getting traction. The conference aims to address the main issues of concern within the framework of this transformation. Program Structure : The conference program will include plenary sessions, invited and contributed papers, poster sessions, product presentations, panel discussions and an exhibition. A series of parallel sessions will be held offering delegates a wide range of in depth presentations by leading national and international experts. Submission of Papers : Unpublished research papers on different themes of the conference are solicited by December 15, 2013. Submission of full papers (not more than 5 pages) with an abstract in approximately 200 words, keywords and references on A4 size paper with margin 1.5 cm on all sides in MS Word format in 10 points New Times Roman type single line spacing. Length of the paper should not exceed 4000 words. Details such as name of the author, designation, title of the article, abstract, name of the affiliating institution, mailing address, telephone number, fax number and E-mail address are to be included. Authors of accepted papers will be informed by 15 January 2014. Selected papers will be published in the proceedings. Hi, It is really amazing to note that Discovery Landscape is widening in India. In this context, i would like to add some more interesting facts which I had observed as part of my comparative study of various Discovery systems ( paper presented in ICAL 2013 held at New Delhi) http://www.scribd.com/doc/170300503/Cloud-Web-Scale-Discovery-Services-Land… The big 4 players in Discovery market are 1. EBSCO Discovery service with more than 2300+ customer base all over the world. 2. Summon Discovery service with 600+ Customers 3. Primo Central of Exlibris 4. Worldcat local EBSCO Discovery service covers more than 90.000 journals and 6 million e-books metadata in its base index and other discovery services also have quite good amount of metadata. Recently Jawaharlal Nehru University had conducted a National Seminar on Web scale Discovery in which EBSCO Discovery Service and Summon presented their products. Sad demise of Prof.F.W.Lancaster

He revolutionized the field of Library Science particularly “Indexing & Information retrieval”. He advocated the concept of “Controlled vocabulary” in information. His books “Online Information retrieval”, “Information retrieval systems” were sought after by MLIS students during 1980’s and 1990s. The second book has also bagged the best book of the year in USA. I attended three day evening lectures delivered by Prof.F.W.Lancaster at Institute of Information Studies, Bangalore (Sponsored by Sarada Endowment for Library Science). May his soul rest in peace. Dear All, It is extremely sorry to inform you the sad demise of Libn. A R Sethi, former University Librarian, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Ex. Deputy Librarian, J.N.U. New Delhi. A man of strong discipline and principles, he immensely contributed to the LIS profession. He was Head of Documentation Division in J.N.U., New Delhi. The computerisation of Panjab University Library had undergone during his tenure as University Librarian. To start the SATKAL Trust (Satinder Kaur Ramdev Memorial Trust for Advancement of Librarianship Trust) was the brainchild of Libn. Sethi. I whole heartedly pay my tribute to such a great soul.
