But the forms of those resources have changed during the times from scrolls and codices; to LPs and LaserDiscs; to e-books, electronic databases and open data sets. Libraries have been always at the cusp of technological developments that revolutionised the information access and use. Library resources have never been more conveniently available on so many devices and in many formats to provide a myriad of learning experiences. At the same time, this revolution deluge presents new challenges to processing, sense-making, and ethical use. Hence, libraries and information professionals have a vital role to play in harnessing the infinite possibilities that today’s technologies offer for information access and service delivery. The potential of libraries is even greater than what is currently realised. There are multiple benefits to be gained from a dynamic and innovative network of libraries based in the heart of communities. These include a more literate society, social cohesion and tolerance, informed decision making and a best start in life. The future of Libraries not only hold the knowledge treasures but also includes connected community places, creative content, knowledge centres, Innovation, digital hubs and delivering a sustainable future to the society. Libraries have been incredible institutions, unrivalled in the role that they play in our society, as a melting pot for people across all walks of life. It is important that we ensure the library network remains relevant and accessible to everyone in our community in the future. ==== CALL FOR PAPERS (2) ==== International UDC Seminar 2017 FACETED CLASSIFICATION TODAY: Theory, Technology and End Users DATE: 14-15 September 2017 VENUE: London WEBSITE: http://seminar.udcc.org/2017/ CONTACT: seminar2017(a)udcc.org International UDC Seminar 2017 marks the anniversaries of two conferences devoted to faceted classification research: sixty years since the First International Study Conference on Classification Research (Dorking, 1957) and twenty years since the the Sixth International Study Conference (London, 1997). The objective of the conference is to revisit faceted analytical theory as a method for (re)constructing modern classifications and indexing languages and the role analytico-synthetic classifications have had in resource discovery and retrieval, from their introduction at the beginning of the 20th century to date. The conference will examine the challenges analytico-synthetic classifications represent for data modelling and interface design in the Web environment. Most importantly, it will explore potential fields of application for faceted classifications in information organization, visualization and presentation of large datasets, social networks and in the open linked data environment. High quality and innovative contributions are invited for the following topics: - The impact of faceted analytical theory and research on modern classification and indexing languages; - Data modelling, data management and data sharing of faceted and analytico-synthetic classifications; - Vocabulary mapping, semantic linking and natural language interfacing of analytico-synthetic systems; - Applications of faceted analytical theory on (re)constructing knowledge classifications and indexing languages; - End user interface design and user-friendly knowledge presentation for faceted systems; - Novel applications of faceted systems outside the bibliographic domain. CONTRIBUTIONS: Two kinds of contributions are invited: conference papers and posters. Authors should submit a paper proposal in the form of an extended abstract (1000-1200 words, including references, for papers; and 500-600 words for posters). The submission form is provided on the conference website. Proposals will be reviewed by the Programme Committee consisting of an international panel of experts. Each submission will undergo a blind review by at least three reviewers. The Conference proceedings will be published by Ergon Verlag and will be distributed at the conference. Dear Sir, May I request you to kindly publish the below text in LIS-forum. ----- Roja Muthiah Research Library (RMRL) is a research hub with 400000 items as resources for Tamil studies covering diverse fields in the humanities, social sciences and popular culture. It is an archive that preserves 300 years of print culture. RMRL is organizing a four day workshop on paper conservation, which includes theory and hands on practical sessions on topics such as: Disinfecting library material Understanding parts of book Disbinding & cleaning Deacidification Strengthening Sewing & Binding Making book jackets & cases for different needs *The workshop will focus more on practical training.* With support received from Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust, RMRL recently undertook a conservation program, conserving rare print materials in the Library. This program primarily focused on conserving old print material in tropical region using non acidic material and employing reversible conservation techniques. With the experience gained through this project, RMRL intends to share the acquired knowledge with other libraries and archives, which in turn would enable the conservation of rare print material in various parts of India.
