Dear Forum members, Greetings from Informatics! Koha - the most widely accepted open source LMS has spread its wings in India with many institutions adopting Koha as their choice of library management system. After the success of the National Koha Conclave in Bangalore early this year, many new initiatives for Koha have been planned in India for supporting Koha users like creating Indian Koha Community, launching KohaCAT, creating Koha training videos to name a few. Informatics plans to create a team of Koha developers, customer support professionals, trainers and business development professionals for promoting Koha to Indian libraries to achieve the objectives outlined in National Koha Conclave. As part of its expansion plan for Koha, Informatics seeks the following professionals (Librarians as well as non-librarians) for expanding its Koha team at Bangalore: 1. Perl Developers 2. Reading fragile old manuscripts will become possible thanks to new technology. But that doesn't mean the treasures will be locked away in those pages forever. MIT Media Lab scientists are trying to overcome the problem with a computational imaging system. This breakthrough lets them read the pages of a book even when it’s closed. No, really. The technology uses terahertz radiation, which allows scanning of the pages one by one – through the cover. There’s also a letter interpretation algorithm that can help understand incomplete text. However, there’s a catch. They’ve only managed to develop the technology sufficiently for it to be able to read around nine pages be fore it’s overtaken by noise. Don't blame them – after all, the page being scanned keeps getting farther away, with other material in between. It also cannot measure the depth after 20 pages. So, if you do stumble upon an old and delicate manuscript you dare not open, you’ll have to wait a while before you can hope to interpret its contents. The power and accuracy of the terahertz technology needs to be improved significantly in order to make this a possibility. Today, we're announcing the addition of 11 more countries to Google Patents with over 41 million new patent publications, bringing the total to over 87 million publications from 17 patent offices around the world. Starting today, you can now search for patents and applications from Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Belgium, Russia, the Netherlands, Finland, Denmark, and Luxembourg in Google Patents. If you’re interested in learning more about inventions such as bulldozing devices, wind farming, or how to make rice wine, you can now search for them and many more. Like our other patent publications, this new collection has been translated into English using Google Translate so you can search using English keywords or the original language. Our collection also includes scientific papers and books from Google Scholar and Google Books, which have been machine-classified like patents with Cooperative Patent Classification codes for easier discovery. You can learn more in the new help center. A robust prior art search, combining advanced search technology and a patent examiner’s technical expertise, allows an examiner to determine if an invention is new and non-obvious. As a result, technology that was already known isn’t taken from the public, and innovative companies won’t be targeted with unnecessary and expensive lawsuits that drain R&D resources.
