Dear All Greetings from the GIPE Library! DSpace is the most implemented digital library software around the world. According to Directory of Open Access Repository (DOAR), of the 2679 registered Repositories, 1133 (42%) are using DSpace. Whereas, in India, of the 69 Repositories, 43 (62%) are using DSpace. Due to varying technical skills of the administrators, it is observed that most of these repositories use different versions from DSpace 1.6 to DSpace 4.1 and also some of the powerful features of DSpace are underutilized. Considering this, GIPE has planned a workshop on 'Advanced DSpace' to bring all the repositories under one version and make use of the most of the DSpace features. Another purpose of this workshop will be to develop a pool of experienced DSpace experts by providing hands-on training with ample practical knowledge that will enable them to build most effective digital repositories in India using DSpace. Workshop will comprise of lectures, demonstration and hands-on training using latest DSpace in detail. Each participant will be provided with a dedicated machine. The few studies conducted so far have been limited to very specific geographic areas (USA), which makes it necessary to find out what is happening in other regions that are not part of mainstream academia, and where repositories play a decisive role in the visibility of scholarly production. The main objective of this study is to ascertain the presence and visibility of Latin American repositories in Google and Google Scholar through the application of page count and visibility indicators. For a sample of 137 repositories, *the results indicate that the indexing ratio is low in Google, and virtually nonexistent in Google Scholar; they also indicate a complete lack of correspondence between the repository records and the data produced by these two search tools*. These results are mainly attributable to limitations arising from the use of description schemas that are incompatible with Google Scholar (repository design) and the reliability of web indicators (search engines). We conclude that *neither Google nor Google Scholar accurately represent the actual size of open access content published by Latin American repositories*; this may indicate a non-indexed, hidden side to open access, which could be limiting the dissemination and consumption of open access scholarly literature. KV Pattom Library launches "Face a Book: The Reading Challenge"

Dear All, I am happy to inform you that we have launched a Library Project titled as "Face a Book: The Reading Challenge" recently. ABOUT THE PROJECT 'Face a Book (FaB) Challenge' is a summer reading programme to promote reading habit during the summer holidays, followed by year-long activities to evaluate its effectiveness. OBJECTIVES The basic objectives of the project are, -to help the students to enjoy reading more and motivate them to read for pleasure -to develop critical reading skills like comprehension, speed, note taking and referencing -to encourage critical thinking, innovation and creativity -to make the students lifelong readers and learners PROJECT PLANNING Stage-1 Fifty (50) students, divided in to two groups (Age 11-14 and Age 15-17), are selected for the Project as 'FaB Challengers'. They have registered on the project website. Fifty Books were selected from the Library based on their content and the age of the reader. Each FaB Challenger has been given with a Book. Stage-2 Each FaB Challenger has to prepare a scrap book titled as “My Little Book on_______”, with a review of the selected book, author profile, bibliography (list of books by the author or written on the book), character sketches, new words/phrases, drawings, paintings, quizzes, quotations, images, comments, references, etc. The scrap book shall be submitted at the time of reopening for evaluation. There will be an exhibition of the scrap books. The FaB Challengers will be provided access to the project blog, where they can post contents like reviews, comments, critical analysis, notes, studies and recommendations A one minute video of the FaB Challenger will be shot in which he/she has to present a review of the book. The videos will be uploaded on to the project website. The FaB Challengers have to present an item on the book in the School Assembly. Stage-3 A FaB Challenger will act as an authority of the particular book and the author. All FaB Challengers will be honoured with ‘Fab Challenger’ badges and participation certificates. Stage-4 All FaB Challengers will be evaluated throughout the Project period and graded accordingly. Based on the performance they will be awarded at the end of the project.
