About the Conference
Information Technology (IT) has
profound impact on progress and development of human civilization. Science and
technology has undergone tremendous improvement and the reflection of its
improvement can be seen in almost all our daily activities. The IT revolution
has increased the demand, consumption, importance of information in present
society.
The librarians with massive volume
of information available in the libraries are faced with challenges relating to
effective storage, processing, retrieval, and dissemination of information. The
IT has touched and enhanced almost all fields and libraries are not an
exception. Rapid advances in IT in the past two decades have brought
revolutionary changes in the concept, organization, functioning, and management
of libraries throughout the world.
Worldwide, libraries have been
exploring new technologies for providing better and faster access to vast
information resources. Information technologies today are characterized by
their very dynamic development and increasing complexity. The modern technology
has greatly improved the capabilities of managing the explosive growth of
information effectively, and has also contributed in providing effective
library services. IT is been widely used for carrying out the technical activities
of libraries, but it is also been used for shaping the library services for
providing efficient information services to the library users. IT has offered
better solutions to achieve greater level of efficiency, productivity, and user
centered services in libraries. We are in the most challenging time when
technology and our traditional library values are converging. Libraries
have undergone a great paradigm shift under the influence of IT.
In this Information Society,
everyone acknowledges that information plays a central role in their
development. Therefore, libraries have evolved into information providers
rather than mere document providers. The expansion of Internet has opened up
electronic information to the masses, and there is an increasing demand for
information to be presented in an visually appealing manner. Indeed, recent
advances in the field of IT are contributing significantly to improve the services
of libraries. Further, the impact of IT has led to a paperless society, digital
libraries, and virtual libraries.
While
acknowledging the changes taking place in the mode and service of information
delivery and usage, it is important that the library professionals rediscover
the specialized needs and expectations of the users so that they can reevaluate
the library services, and reinvigorate the library professional. The future of
libraries greatly depend on the librarians attempt to understand the evolving
