Dear Colleagues, I wish you all a very happy and prosperous dipawali. I am pleased to invite you to the one day awareness seminar on how to access Infrmation and cultural resources at IGNCA. The seminar will be held on 19th November 2010 from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm at IGNCA. The particiaption is free but will be done on first cum first basis. About IGNCA: As you might be aware that Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) is a premier research and academic institute engaged in preservation, documentation and promotion of Indian Art and Culture. The IGNCA established in the memory of Smt. Indira Gandhi by the Government of India, in 1987, as an autonomous institutions encompassing the study and experience of all forms of the arts -- each form with its own integrity, yet within a dimension of mutual interdependence, interrelatedness with nature, social structure and cosmology. This view of the arts, integrated with, and essential to the large matrix of human culture, is predicated upon Smt. Gandhi's recognition of the role of the arts as essential to the integral quality of a person, at home with himself and society. It partakes of the holistic world-view so forcefully articulated throughout the Indian tradition, and emphasized by modern Indian leaders from Mahatma Gandhi to Rabindranath Tagore. About Kala Nidhi Reference Library: Kala Nidhi Division of the IGNCA is a Culture Knowledge Resource Centre. It is the knowledge hub of IGNCA and is designed to support the research objectives of the various in-house Divisions as well as also acts as national facilities to support scholars and researchers in India and abroad. With a collection of 1,50,000 books, back issues of over 150 foreign titles in the area of Art and Archeology, over 100,000 visuals (all digitized), over 3000 rare books (all digitized), 3,00,000 manuscripts (All digitized), current issues of 250 Indian and foreign Journals, electronic full text databases such as JSTOR, Wilson Arts Abstract and Index, EBSCO Humanities International Complete, J-Gate Arts & Humanities, 10 Personal Libraries of eminent scholars like Dr. Suniti Kumar Chatterjee, Prof. Hazari Prasad Dewedi, Thakur Jai Dev Singh, Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan (under processing) etc. are the resources available under disposal of users of Kala Nidhi Reference Library. Subject Coverage: The collection covers the various subjects such as Anthropology, Archaeology, Architecture, Arts, Bibliography, Computer, and Information Science, Conservation, Culture, Dance, Folklore, History, Humanities, Library & Information Science, Linguistics, Literature, Museum Studies, Music, Numismatics, Oriental Studies, Performing Arts, Philosophy, Puppetry, Religion, History of Science, Sociology, Social Sciences, Theatre and Area Studies etc. Besides this, over 200 IGNCA publications and 50 DVDs released by IGNCA, large collection of archival material such as photographs, art objects, artifacts, masks etc. in IGNCA Cultural Archives along with over 1000 hours of video documentations on Cultural Heritage are also accessible to users through Kala Nidhi Reference Library. Kala Nidhi Reference Library has also started development of Article Indexing & Abstracting Database of Indian Journals received in Reference Library. This may be the first initiative of this kind in India. Digital Library : Kala Nidhi Reference Library is in process of development of Digital Library which will have digital collection of over 2.5 lacs manuscripts, 1.00 lac Slides/visual, 3000 Rare Books, Photographs, paintings, masks and audio/video etc. How to access Cultural Resources at IGNCA: All above resources are available for free consultation. Kala Nidhi Reference Library is open to all with the following types of Memberships:- 1. For one week - Access is free of charges 2. Temporary membership - Rs.100/- for one month 3. Annual Membership Fee for students Rs.250/- P.A and other scholars Rs.500/- P.A. 4. Annual membership Renewal for students Rs. 150/- P.A and other scholars Rs.300/- P.A. 5. Life Membership:- On time payment of Rs.5000/- Copies of the Manuscripts: The copies of various collections available at IGNCA may be obtained as per the IGNCA rules. Thomason College was converted into University of Roorkee after independence in 1947 which now have been converted into Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee in 2001 by the Central Government recognizing its national importance. The Mahatma Ghandhi Central Library Mahatma Gandhi Central Library of the Institute finds a unique place in the academic library scenario in this part of world. It is an amalgamation of the old and the new. While it is one of the oldest academic libraries in country, it is housed in a state of art new building using latest ICT. The Library contains more than 3.40 lacs documents in every form of media. It has access to more than 12000+ e-journals and 25000+ e-books. About 6000 books are added to its collection annually. The building of the MGCL has been designed keeping in view of latest ICT facilities. It has a provision of more then 200 I/Os for connecting desktop computers. Wi Fi connectivity is provided for laptops. A well equipped imaging centre with two Minolta Planetary Scanners and several flatbed scanners has been established for digitization purpose. The Library maintains six servers for various activities. The library has also established an Institute repository "Bhagirathi" which is to contain Institute achieves and other publications and available at http://bhagirathi.iitr.ac.in/dspace . About Roorkee Roorkee is situated at the foot of Himalayas, has picturesque landscape blessed with holy Ganga canal; and is the gateway to world famous pilgrimage and tourist places of Hardwar, Rishikesh, Valley of flowers, Badrinath, Kedarnath, Dehradun and Mussoorie. It has a population of over 1,50,000 and is at a distance of about 180 Km from Delhi. It is directly connected through railways to Delhi, Bombay, Lucknow, Calcutta, and Amritsar. INDEST-AICTE Consortium Indian National Digital Library in Engineering Sciences and Technology (INDEST) Consortium" was set-up in 2003 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) on the recommendation of an Expert Group appointed by the Ministry. It provides access to electronic resources to its member institutions comprising of more than 1207 members including 48 core member institutions with MHRD funding, including IITs, IISc, NITs, NERIST, ISM, IIIT, IIITM , NITIE, IISER & NITTTR, 60 AICTE supported institutions and 1099 institutions that have joined the consortium under its self-supported category. The Consortium was converted into INDEST-AICTE Consortium in December 2005 with the AICTE playing pivotal role in enrolling its affiliated engineering colleges and institution as members of the consortium. Registration Fee There is no registration fee for the members of INDEST-AICTE Consortium. The participants need to submit their registration form through proper channel. However for non members the registration fee is Rs.1500. Accompanied persons shall be charged Rs. 1000 each extra. Lodging, Boarding and Travel The arrangement for lodging and boarding of participants will be made in Institute's guest houses from 17th November 2010 evening to 20th November 2010 morning on twin sharing and first come first basis. Rs 750/- shall be charged for accommodation. Dr. Arvind Tikekar was my teacher at Univ of Mumbai during 1984-85 and later he took over as Univ Librarian and HOD of dept of Lib sc from Dr. Andersen. Dr. Tikekar had a keen sense of historical developments in our field and also envisaged the IT revolution that would sweep our profession. Univ of Mumbai Library had a good deal of automation initiated during his era. An era has ended with Dr. Tikekar's sad demise. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Dear professional colleagues, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts(IGNCA) in collaboration with ANWESHA, Guwahati is organizing a three-days Workshop on "Status of digitization, Digital Preservation and Access to Libraries and Archive in North-East India" at Guwahati during January, 2011. The exact dates of the Workshop will be announced very soon. The Workshop is aimed for participation only for the Libraries and Archives in North-East India. In this context, the essence of digitization is safe preservation of invaluable books and manuscripts and their easy access to the users. The climatic conditions in the North-East and the area's proneness to natural calamities make the preservation of valuable books and manuscripts an uphill task in the region. Because of our lackadaisical attitudes and lack of awareness, we have already lost precious books and documents of historical importance. Through digitization and digital preservation of books and manuscripts, we can safely preserve them. Preservation alone is not enough. We should also have easy access to the preserved materials for its meaningful use. E-access to digital libraries and archives saves us the money, time and energy of visiting locations for their use. It also paves the way for intellectual resource sharing. Unfortunately, we have not done enough towards digitization and digital preservation of our books and manuscripts in the libraries and archives in the North-East. The conservation needs of the region, in this respect demand that we have a fresh look at the status of digitization and digital preservation of our libraries and archives. Equally important is the issue of easy access to the books in the libraries and archival materials. Therefore, the proposed workshop will mainly focus on the following:- Conservation and preservation needs of the libraries and archives in the North-East. Identification of libraries and archive of historical significance. Collaboration between IGNCA and libraries and archives in North-East. Acquisition of personal libraries and archives from North East, India. The workshop will comprise an inaugural session, technical session, panel discussion and a valedictory session. It is expected that this workshop will offer us a road map towards digitization, digital preservation and easy access to the libraries and archives in the North-East, thus leading to a new collaborative effort of IGNCA and Anwesha. Exhibition on Rare and Old Books and Manuscripts: Weather in Assam is wet and humid in most part of the year which is not at all conducive for the longevity of books and manuscripts. But still there are many rare and old books and manuscripts in various institutions and personal hands in Assam. The objective as this exhibition will be to create awareness among the younger generation for better preservation of the invaluable books and manuscripts, because they are so integral part of our culture and enlightenment. The occasion will also be used to motivate prospective scholars, authors and book collectors to donate their personal collection of books to IGNCA for better preservation and use. The more details about the workshop will be made available at IGNCA website www.ignca.nic.in very soon. All the libraries/archives in North-East India are requested to participate in above events. The libraries and archives that unable to get travel support from their organization will be provided travel support also. There is no participation fee and registration will be confirmed on the basis of suitability of the participants to the Workshop. Apart from lectures from the experts, selected presentations in form of case studies, project proposals and status paper may be accepted for presentation at the Workshop.
