Prasad Executive Officer, SRELS, Bangalore ***** Forthcoming Event Workshop on GENISISWEB, WINISIS DATABASE TO GSDL (18-20 August 2008) Organized by Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science, Bangalore with Ranganathan Centre for Information Studies, Bangalore WORKSHOP OBJECTIVE To provide intensive training in GENISISWEB and conversion of WINISIS database into GSDL. WORKSHOP CONTENT - WINISIS archiving of full text documents in all ordinary formats including a fully downloaded website. - Creation of web front end with GenisisWeb for making it user-friendly and accessible over a network - Creation of a CD-ROM library of full text documents - Conversion of a WINISIS database into GSDL archive RESOURCE PERSON K. Rajasekharan, Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA), Thrissur, Kerala The target audience includes librarians, information professionals and others interested in building different types of databases. Koha 3 stable version now released. You can download from the usual location: http://download.koha.org/koha-3.00.00-stableRC1.tar.gz 1. Zebra plugin - Zebra is a high-performance, general-purpose structured text indexing and retrieval engine 2. New installer - based on the common Perl module ExtUtils::MakeMaker, the new installer makes it a snap to get Koha running on just about any platform. 3. Standard APIs - Koha 3 supports a number of important library search and retrieval standards and microformats, such as SRU/W, Z39.50 and COinS/OpenURL. Also supported is the popular Internet standard: OpenSearch (http://opensearch.a9.com/) created by Amazon's A9. Records are stored internally in an SGML-like format and can be retrieved in MARCXML, Dublin Core, MODS, RSS, Atom, RDF-DC, SRW-DC, OAI-DC, and EndNote; 4. Cross-platform, multi-RDBMS, Web-server agnostic - Run Koha on the platform of your choice: Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, Solaris. Koha 3 also includes better support for multi-RDBMS (MySQL 5.0 and PostgreSQL), and runs under Apache2, IIS, or the web server of your choosing. 5. Multi-lingual support - Koha was designed from the ground up for multilingual libraries. Koha 3 can handle Chinese, Japanese, and even right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew with ease (BiDi). Koha's index engine (Zebra) can handle record formats containing any UNICODE compliant script, such as Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese and Korean. Zebra has this support via the ICU libraries created and maintained by IBM. 6. New templates - Koha's staff and patron interfaces are developed with a template system that's easy to theme. 7. Koha 3 has quite a few new modules, as well as enhancements to existing modules, including: news writer, label creator, calendar, OPAC comments, MARC staging and overlay, notices, transaction logs, guided reports with a data dictionary and task scheduler, classification sources/filing rules. -- Vimal Kumar V. Boyd Rayward , Professor, Graduate School of Library & Information Science,University of Illinois (United States) is the 23rd receipient of the Award.The International Award Committee of the Kaula Endowment for Library & Information Science has selected Dr. W. Boyd Rayword for the International Prof Kaula Gold Medal and Citation. Prof. Kaula Endowment for Library and Information Science was formed on 13th March,1975, at the 51st Birthday of the world-renowned library educator, bibliographer,library and information scientist, UNESCO Expert & professional journalist of overfive decades, Prof. P.N. Kaula, with Guntur(Andhra Pradesh)as its headquarter. TheEndowment decided to award International Kaula Gold Medal & Citation to a topranking professional who was distinguished himself as a library & informationscientist or educator in library & information science.This Award is given away every year from 1975 onwards.There are 22 distinguished reciepients of the Award from 11 countries & some international organisations. The International Award is named after Prof. Kaula who has been described as the "Apostle" of the world famous Indian Library Science Genious Dr. S.R. Ranganathan. Kerala 1989 8. Haryana 1989 9. Mizoram 1993 10. Goa 1993 11 Gujrat 2000 12 Orissa 2000 13. Rajasthan 2005 14. Uttar Pradesh 2005 15. Uttrakhand 2005 But what is benefits of Library Legislation. In today technological era. The Job of librarian is not so easy as it seemed to be. Due to exponential growth of literature in all fields of universe of Knowledge increasing day by day, the Job of Librarian became more challenging and tuff. and without Librarian It is not Possible to retrieve exact information in minimum possible time. But when talking about the wages and allowances to Librarian that is nil. Nobody in our field think about this. and Librarian became a Clerk and salary below the salary of clerk. No pay scale no facility no allowances but Librarian still ready to work only for saving this field and to serve humanity. Our Government and seniors should be think about the welfare of our field. Otherwise, the existence Library & information science from Universe of Knowledge unseen. And no one want to became a Librarian in New Generation.
