Right to Information Act -Jobs should be given to Information Professionals

Dear Sir/Madam, The much awaited Right to Information Act has come into force in India.And already we have seen and heard that there is a great demand for information which are vital to its functioning and also to contain corruption and to hold Governments and their instrumentalities accountable to the governed.But Govt Authorities have totally neglected the library and Information Professionals, most of the people who have appointed as public Information Officer have came from Journalism and mass communication." Public Information Officer" job is best suited for LIS professionals where the skills of storage , organise and dissemination of Information is highly required.Already there are instances that Public Information Officers have failed to provide right information to the right people at a right time.This is because of lack of skills to organise and storage of Information.This is the right time to Library Association and Universities to pressurize Govt. appoint library and Information professionals as " Public Information Officer" and this will definitely helps people to have information quickly whenever they need.This will not only helps govt to function smoothly and huge opportunities for LIS professionals as well. When will the term "Key Words" be replaced by "tags"?

Friends, We know how Meta-data has replaced the term "Indexing" and"Cataloguing" in the last decade. Now it is turn of "Key Words" to bereplaced by a term called "tagging". The only difference in these twoterms is that "Key Words" are picked up from some standard vocabularylike MeSH by professionals; "tagging" is done by end users to bookmarkand categorize an internet resource without any rules or vocabulary.The intention is to retrieve the "tagged" resource in future. Butthere is a Method in this Madness of tagging. The user indirectlyregisters a "vote" in favor of the resource being tagged. Such voteswhen collected on a service provider end can be used to indicaterelative popularity of various resources. Del.icio.us <http://del.icio.us > is one of such service. This collective behavioris known "collaborative tagging". Macgregor, George and McCulloch, Emma in their pre-print <http://eprints.rclis.org/archive/00005703/ > [accepted forpublication] has suggested that Librarians and informationprofessional researchers should take a leading role in research aimedat assessing the efficacy of collaborative tagging in relation toinformation storage, organization, and retrieval, and to influence thefuture development of collaborative tagging systems. Digital Library of India

Dear all Recently, I visited a website of the Digital Library of India [http://www.dli.ernet.in/]. It is a million book project - a collaborative effort between Indian Institute of Science and Carnegie Melon University with partners from Government, Academia and Religious Institutions. 54000 books have already been scanned and 29000 books are available for online access. It is one of the biggest digital library initiatives in India. The objective of this project is clearly mentioned in its mission statement given below: "The mission is to create a portal for the Digital Library of India which will foster creativity and free access to all human knowledge. As a first step in realizing this mission, it is proposed to create the Digital Library with a free-to-read, searchable collection of one million books, predominantly in Indian languages, available to everyone over the Internet. This portal will also become an aggregator of all the knowledge and digital contents created by other digital library initiatives in India. Very soon we expect that this portal would provide a gateway to Indian Digital Libraries in science, arts, culture, music, movies, traditional medicine, palm leaves and many more. The result will be a unique resource accessible to anyone in the world 24x7, without regard to socioeconomic background or nationality." E - Literacy campaign in Kerala

Dear all, 'Akshaya',the ambitious project of Government of Kerala has so far made around 5.8 lakh people e-literate. The project, that was launched in Malappuram District, one of the northern districts in Keala is currently moving ahead in Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikkode, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kollam and Pathanmthitta. Will "Google Scholar" beat the "Web of Science" in future ?

Friends, Just revised Google Scholar < http://scholar.google.com > last week. Noticed that it has improved a lot. Just searched for "OpenMED@NIC" <http://snipurl.com/mz7n > It gave 925 hits. Not bad considering thatOpenMED@NIC < http://openmed.nic.in > has around 1015 documents. Whatfacinated me was that it presented link "Cited by" along with thehits. Clicking those showed all the articles citing an article inquestion in OpenMED@NIC. No wonder Dean Giustini of Biomedical Branch Library, VancouverHospital & Health Sciences Centre, writes in his blog an item - GoogleScholar Rivals Web of Science <http://weblogs.elearning.ubc.ca/googlescholar/archives/023377.html >comparing Web of Science with Google Scholar.
