LHC PLANS FOR OPEN DATA FUTURE: RESEARCHERS SHARE RESULTS TO KEEP THEM ACCESSIBLE
by Ragaavendra R 28 Nov '13

28 Nov '13

Dear Moderator pls circulate. LHC PLANS FOR OPEN DATA FUTURE: RESEARCHERS SHARE RESULTS TO KEEP THEM ACCESSIBLE When the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is humming along, the data come in a deluge. The four experimental detectors at the facility, based at CERN, Europe's particle-physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland, collect some 25 petabytes of information each year. Storing the data is not a problem: hard drives are cheap and getting cheaper. The challenge is preserving knowledge that is less commonly stored - the software, algorithms and reference plots specific to each experiment. These often degrade or disappear with time, says Cristinel Diaconu of the Marseilles Centre for Particle Physics in France, who is chair of the international Data Preservation in Long Term Analysis in High Energy Physics (DPHEP) study group. He worries that if the data continue to be stored in their current state, physicists trying to decipher them in 10 years' time will be unable to reconstruct the discovery of the Higgs boson. "When the LHC programme comes to an end, it will probably be the last data at this frontier for many years," he says. "We can't afford to lose it. ---------------------------- Original Message ---------------------------- Subject: Re: Save libraries and librarianship From: "Sangeeta Narang" <sangeeta.bbdl(a)gmail.com> Date: Sat, November 23, 2013 7:48 pm To: lis-forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Vasantha, Your vision about the libraries and librarianship in India is very apt. It is true that higher authorities have little concern about the growth and development of public libraries and even advancements in medical libraries is almost abysmal.(Though they have the direct link with the society) One can see how well, management libraries, engineering libraries even university libraries are performing. Neither is there much literature or activities found on public libraries or medical libraries. Many of the professional associations are for the namesake just like the Medical Library Association of India. I wish they should be more active and should unitedly work for improving the status of medical librarians rather than absorbing the posts for their personal gains. Thank you KALA for raising the issue 'save libraries save librarianship' in one of your seminar. Hope such meetings and seminars will be a regular feature all around. Thank you Lis-forum for sending us the regular updates. Indian Statistical Institute Documentation Research and Training Centre Bangalore 560059 Seminar (4) 2012-14 eLearning Management System : A Critical Study Abstract The success of the e-learning paradigm observed in recent times has created a growing demand for e-learning systems in universities and other educational institutions, which has led to the development of a number of either commercial or open-source eLearning Management Systems (eLMS). What are those eLMS systems, or how they function? The present discussion initially highlights certain distinctive features of e-learning management systems. Basically the idea of adaptive e-learning is being facilitated through the use, implementation and installation of various open source or commercial software. Such software for their operation requires specific platforms. Because of multiplicity of platforms and approaches for systems implementation, it becomes increasingly difficult to manage or compare them. Each new LMS presents its own learning model. How to compare different e-learning platforms, and on what basis to choose the most adequate one, is a task of ever increasing importance. Thus a comparative study has been made to enumerate the utility and effectiveness of e-learning software like Moodle, Sakai, ATutor, Caroline and Dokeos. However, with implementation of different eLMS modules certain barriers have evolved. Issues related to these barriers would be addressed in the concluding section of this discussion. Besides this, the conclusion also provides insights in regard of what lies in future for the idea of e-learning management systems, and how can its drawbacks be resolved SPEAKER : KAUSTAV SAHA VENUE : DRTC CLASSROOM DATE : 28/11/2013 TIME : 2 PM ALL ARE CORDIALLY INVITED Biswanath Dutta Seminar Coordinator -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
