An exploratory study on LIS-forum
by Satish Munnolli 28 Jan '14

28 Jan '14

Dear Professionals, We are all using and following LIS-Forum platform since years. Though there are many 'Listservs' floating in India this is one of most successful mailing list (evolved in 1994) I have observed and also 'am an avid follower of the same. How it's being used by the members in last few years is well depicted with analysis in a paper appeared in "DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology" 2014 issue. An exploratory study shows insights of the discussion list and type of postings made by members on the platform. The paper is available http://www.publications.drdo.gov.in/ojs/index.php/djlit/article/download/594 2/3089 May be it is an interesting one for all members of LIS-Forum to know the kind of discussions taken place in past few years. UGC Infonet Digital Library Consortium discontinued...!
by Gopakumar Velayudhanpillai 28 Jan '14

28 Jan '14

UGC Infonet Digital Library Consortium discontinued...There is a message running over the header image of UGC Infonet Project website stating that the Project is closed from 31st of March 2012. Yesterday universities received e-mails from INFLIBNET authorities that the UGC Infonet Digital Library Consortium has been discontinued in 12th plan due to paucity of funds. Not able to understand what is happening...!If the universities are trying to subscribe to these journals we will not be able to get even one by tenth of the facilities we get through infonet. This leads to a scary situation. In the 70s and 80s people had to run to big institutions like IISc and IITs to get access to such academic literature. After INFLIBNET came into existence the huge divide existed for access to academic literature was to an extent avoided. Now those days are here again. Authorities at the UGC should take up this issue very seriously and continue with the digital library consortium. Hope the co! nfusion will be over in no days. Dr GOPAKUMAR V. It is about making scientific research available to anyone and anywhere in the world, to read and access and build upon... so people can do interesting things, and work in new ways with the material. The idea is to make research material more valuable. The history of the model is that publishing scientific manuscripts, especially ones with complexed, detailed, colored figures was expensive. So, if you wanted your article to be distributed widely, you sent it to commercial publishers and then they would manage the review process and communications with the reviewers and revisions and once it gets accepted and the they handled typesetting and printing and distribution of your scientific work... Re: [LIS-Forum] An exploratory study on LIS-forum

Thanks for an interesting link to LIS-FORUM study / results. I am happy to see that even after 'retiring' from active librarianship in 2000 my name is found among top nine contributors! If some data about total number of subscribers to LIS-Forum (how it has increased from inception is given that will be useful.I vaguely remember that the number of subscribers was around 800 at one point of time. Future similar studies may perhaps take into account: 1.Length of thread of topics 2.Intensity of discussion in terms of period (say x messages in y days) 1 will indicate what type of topics draw interest 2 will indicate topicality (congratulations / condolence / examination) Dr P Vyasamoorthy President: Society for Serving Seniors 30 Gruhalakshmi Colony, Secunderabad 500015.
