ANOTHER CASE OF FRAUD IN SCIENCE
by Ragaavendra R 15 Apr '14

15 Apr '14

Dear Moderator pls circulate. ANOTHER CASE OF FRAUD IN SCIENCE Just as the chapter on Hwang Woo Suk, a South Korean stem cell researcher and one of the biggest known research fraudsters, came to an end recently, another major fraud by a Japan-based stem cell researcher has taken centre-stage. Two "path-breaking" papers published on January 30 in Nature by a team led by 30-year-old Haruko Obokata of the Riken Center for Developmental Biology in Kobe claimed to have made the process of reprogramming adult mice cells to pluripotent stem cells (capable of becoming any of the specialised adult tissue) very simple. Also, by being able to contribute to the formation of placental tissue, the pluripotent stem cells so produced were shown to be more versatile than even embryonic stem cells. But a torrent of questions on falsification, manipulation and duplication of images and plagiarism were raised days after the publication. Scientists were also unable to replicate the study in their labs; one of the co-authors of the papers failed in his attempts post-publication. With the papers and Ms. Obokata coming under intense scrutiny, researchers unearthed a few unethical practices in her thesis as well - about 20 pages of her thesis, completed in 2011, bear a striking similarity to information posted in the National Institutes of Health website. Also, two images used with one paper, produced through an experiment completely different from the published work, appear in her thesis. But the most damaging factor is that the two stem-cell lines produced from a particular strain of mouse have been found to come from different strains. Unfortunately, for a fraud of this magnitude, the investigation by a six-member committee constituted by the Riken Center did not measure up to the standards one would normally come to expect of such institutions. The scope of the examination was limited - only six issues concerning image manipulation and duplication and plagiarism were scrutinised but the core issue of examining the veracity of the study was skirted. While dismissing the four problems as "innocent errors," the committee judged the manipulation of an image and the use of an image from her doctoral thesis as deliberate attempts to falsify data. Though it has labelled her actions as "scientific misconduct," the committee has only confirmed what is abundantly clear. Unlike Riken, the Seoul National University did brilliantly in probing Mr. Hwang's case. With Nature yet to conclude its investigation, Ms. Obokata planning to appeal the judgment and another committee being set up to determine punishment, the last word has not been said. But Ms. Obokata has surely not read the journal's elaborate points of information for authors on the matter of image manipulation, which was added after the Hwang episode. Wellcome Library and NLM establish agreement to make 150 years of biomedical journals freely available online
by madhuresh.singhal 15 Apr '14

15 Apr '14

Dear All, Wellcome Library and NLM are collaborating to make 150 years of biomedical journals freely available online. However complete list of titles is not declared yet but part of the project will include Mental Health journals as well as "Indian Medical Gazette". Citation will be added article level in PubMed and full text will be available in PubMed Central and its European counterpart. Please see below for full detail. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wellcome Library and NLM establish agreement to make 150 years of biomedical journals freely available online Representatives of the US National Library of Medicine (NLM), a component of the National Institutes of Health, and the Wellcome Library have signed a memorandum of understanding to work together to make thousands of complete back issues of historically significant biomedical journals freely available online. The terms of the agreement include a donation of £750,000 ($1.2 million) to the NLM that will support coordination of the three-year project to scan original materials from NLM's collection at the article level, and the Wellcome Library's work to secure copyright clearances and permissions for electronic deposit from publishers. NLM will undertake conservation of the original material to ensure its preservation for future generations. NLM is authorised to accept donations in support of its mission. Key journals charting the development of modern medicine over the last 150 years will be digitised in their entirety and made available on the National Institutes of Health life sciences repository PubMed Central (PMC) and its European counterpart, Europe PMC. The project builds on the Medical Journal Backfiles Digitisation Project (2004-2010), and will contribute substantially to the current PMC archive of over 3 million articles from medical journals. Part of the project will concentrate on mental health journals, supporting a major archive digitisation programme also being undertaken by the Wellcome Library. Journals to be digitised include 'Mental Health', 'Mental Hygiene' and the 'Journal of Psychological Medicine and Mental Pathology'. Other journals have been selected for their general relevance, such as the 'Indian Medical Gazette', the 'British and Foreign Medico-Chirurgical Review' and the 'Transactions of the Epidemiology Society of London'. Donald A B Lindberg, Director of the NLM, said "This is a wonderful step forward in our continuing partnership with the Wellcome Trust to preserve and make freely available important biomedical literature for research, education, and learning. It is an example of a truly useful collaboration, and NLM is grateful to the Wellcome for its generosity." Simon Chaplin, Head of the Wellcome Library, and Jeffrey S Reznick, Chief of the NLM's History of Medicine Division, worked together to arrange the partnership in cooperation with their respective teams. "We are delighted to partner with NLM to make these important archives freely available to users across the world," said Chaplin. "It is crucial that digitised content can be found and used easily, and PubMed Central, and its European counterpart, Europe PMC, are at the top of the list for anyone searching for biomedical journals." Reznick said: "This partnership will benefit generations of individuals who wish to learn about biomedical history, the thousands who use PMC regularly today and the many more tomorrow who will discover and use its rich content to study the past for the benefit of the present and the future." In addition to images and searchable text, NLM will also create article-level citations for PubMed. Digitisation is expected to start in late 2014 and to be completed by 2017. Material will be added to PMC and Europe PMC as it is digitised.
