Fwd: A MOOC on copyright for teachers and librarians
by Subbiah Arunachalam 20 Jun '14

20 Jun '14

Friends at Academic and Research Libraries: I want to alert the members of this list to a short Coursera MOOC on copyright, designed for teachers and librarians at all levels, that will be offered starting *21 July 2014*. The MOOC is taught by three librarian/lawyers who all specialize in this area -- Kevin Smith of Duke University, Anne Gilliland from UNC Chapel Hill, and Lisa Macklin from Emory University. This is a free course. More information and enrollment are available at the course site: https://www.coursera.org/course/cfel Of course, the course will talk about US copyright law, but it would still be useful and relevant to Indian librarians. SIGMETRICS Digest - 4 Jun 2014 to 6 Jun 2014

---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2014 16:30:09 +0530 (IST) From: ksc(a)library.iisc.ernet.in Dear Colleagues There has been considerable recent debate here about Open Access versus 'Traditional' publishing and the role of commercial publishers. A current scandal in the UK has evidenced that the commercial sector is actively trying to suppress debate on its role and business models by unethically interfering with the normal editorial process. Taylor and Francis has lost the confidence and trust of the creators of a well-known journal, Prometheus, and the resulting stink over censorship and academic freedom has rightly made the general press. Well worth checking out since it has implications for all academics and is of particular note to this list. The THES report is a good place to start and has links to the disputed - censored! - article and general debate.
