Sad demise of Mr. VL Kalyan

Dear Professional Colleagues, A good friend of many of us Shri V.L. Kalyan passed away around 5 PM on 9th Jan 2015. It is learnt that he was admitted to Ramaiah Hospital on 8th evening probably due to heart attack. I learnt about this sad demise only around 9.15 PM, Only few friends, who learnt about this news bit early and who stayed near to his house could get the opportunity to pay last respects to the departed soul personally as the body was taken around 10 PM to a his village near Dharwad for last rites. He served as Head, Technical Information Centre at BEL, Bangaluru for long period. He was General Secretary of Karnataka State Library Association for a long period and was professionally active even after retirement by way of delivering invited lectures in Seminars/Conferences, IGNOU contact classes, etc. He was very friendly and jolly person, who contributed a lot the professional development. Department of Library and Information Science, Aligarh Muslim University, Under the UGC-Special Assistance Programme (SAP DRS-I) is going to organize a National Conference on “Knowledge Management in Libraries and Information Centers (KMLIC-2015)” on 18th – 19th March, 2015. *Introduction* Knowledge Management (KM) is an influential tool for promoting uniqueness, realizing and re-engineering the various aspects of day-to-day activities of an organization. Knowledge Management is a new research area which is developing very rapidly. In the current knowledge economy, the survival of organization depends on how good it manages the knowledge to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. Information professionals should also evolve and adopt the knowledge environment by implementing knowledge management in their field. Knowledge management represents an opportunity by entrusting new roles and responsibilities for libraries and LIS professionals. LIS professionals have to gain new skills and involve themselves effectively in knowledge management practices to become relevant to their organisations to enable them to have a competitive edge for employment to people from other industries. The ultimate purpose of KM is to increase the effectiveness and sustainability of organizations, particularly in case of libraries and information centers. Although the concept of KM originated in the business field, but in practice it has now spread to the non-profit sector as well. Libraries as non-profit making organisations, improve their communication both horizontally and vertically thus promoting a sharing culture. It is for the same implications that the conference is being organised to pool up both the knowledge and experiences of the professionals working in the areas of KM and discuss the tools of managing the assets of knowledge. The conference is enveloping mostly on the various facets of Knowledge Management and its application in Libraries and Information Centers, thrived particularly with the following objectives: - To create awareness and provide a platform for exchange of ideas concerning tacit and explicit knowledge - To share knowledge and skills among academicians/ LIS professionals/ other knowledge based professionals working in private and public sector. - To understand knowledge management tools and their usage in KM initiatives. - To provide an opportunity to share innovative ideas and plans in the areas of KM. To identify suitable initiatives in implementing KM in the library and information centers. *About AMU* Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), established in 1920, A.M.U. is one of the oldest central government funded universities in India. Bashiruddin, who later on introduced a full time ‘Bachelor of Library Science' course in 1958-59 with full time Lecturers for the first time in the country. Subsequently, 'Master of Library Science' was introduced in1970-71 and Ph.D in 1990-91. A special feature of the revised syllabi is the emphasis on Information Technology and hands-on training on a number of library automation software packages. A well-equipped computer lab supports the revised syllabi with Internet facility. The seminar library of the department is the first fully automated library of the university. The teachers of the department have also received training in Information Technology within the country and also abroad. Presently the department is headed by the chairman Prof. Shabahat Husain, who has been recently conferred with the Prof. S.P Narang Research Promotion Award by Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS). It is really a sad news. Recently, I had met him in a conference recently organized by Besant College, Mangalore. He was very active person and made his presence noticeable with his valuable remarks and advice to college librarians. Our life is a "Jatakaa Bandi", Vidhi is its "saaheba/owner" and he decides our journey. I pray for peaceful life of departed life. Dear Professional friends, It is a shocking news to hear that Mr.V.L.Kalyan is no more. One of the very active professional and a very humble professional passed away on 9th Jan 2015 after a brief illness. Mr. Kalyan was very affectionate friend to not only to me and my family but as well to all professionals in the state and admired by his students in IGNOU for which he has been an academic counsellor for more than a decade. He served in various organisations like in ITC, Bharat Electronics for a very long time and after retirement he was library advisor at Indian Statistical Institute for two years. Very active in all professional conferences and seminars and has also served as a resource person for CEP. He was also Gen Secretary of KALA and actively associated with Dept. of Public Libraries. The profession is poorer by his demise and we pray almighty to his soul rest in peace and convey our heartfelt condolenses to his bereaved family. It is a bad period for the profession as we lost four veterans in the span of nearly a month. This will continue the emerging series of International Training Workshops which CODATA is seeking to establish with a variety of partners. Recent training workshops have been held in Beijing, China and in Nairobi, Kenya. The International Training Workshop will take place at the Indian Statistical Institute in Bangalore, India on 9-20 March 2015. Objective: The intensive, two week residential course has as its objective to train early and mid-career data professionals in using latest technology and techniques in Big Data management and its exploitation. Eligible Participants The workshop is targeted at early and mid-career data professionals. The definition is deliberately flexible to allow candidates from a variety of backgrounds to make a case.
