Libraries should be an integral part of the research process
by Subbiah Arunachalam 22 May '15

Received in the mail. <http://www.oclc.org/en-US/member-stories/share.html>. Embed your library in the research process [image: Image from the SHARE Notify service] <http://www.share-research.org/> "Librarians need to be more involved in the process of scholarship, not just collecting its output." *Judy Ruttenberg* Program Director for Transforming Research Libraries, Association of Research Libraries The same modern technology that advances research methods also expands the role that libraries play in the research process. Researchers may compile massive digital data sets, build computer programs to run complex calculations and present the results through draft papers, blogs, conference presentations and, finally, published work. Libraries traditionally have collected and preserved the published work. The SHARE <http://www.share-research.org> community initiative seeks to engage librarians in conversations about what to do with these other research outputs. "There has been so much conversation about libraries shifting from collecting outputs to embedding within the research process," explained Judy Ruttenberg, Program Director for Transforming Research Libraries at the Association of Research Libraries <http://www.arl.org/index.php>. "But *The Evolving Scholarly Record* report opens up the opportunities for libraries not just to participate in creating scholarship but also to preserve the pieces of the scholarly record we need to preserve.” *The Evolving Scholarly Record* <http://www.oclc.org/research/publications/library/2014/oclcresearch-evolvin…>, a report by OCLC Research, proposes a framework that describes the diverse array of materials moving into the scholarly record today as well as the key roles in the stakeholder ecosystem surrounding those materials. "This framework helps us facilitate conversations about what that broader role means for services and for the kind of tools we need," Judy said. "Where does the repository meet the virtual resource environment?" "The act of doing research and sharing it or releasing it to the community takes many, many forms. Wouldn't there be a great value in following that as it happens?" "The first phase for SHARE is our partnership with the Center for Open Science <http://centerforopenscience.org/> to build a notification service called SHARE Notify <http://centerforopenscience.org/pr/2014-06-02/>," Judy continued. This service will allow researchers to receive notifications when someone contributes to the "larger pipeline of what scholarship looks like," she said. "Right now, everything is completely dispersed. Researchers have a lot of options for how they share, present and archive their research. …These research release events will push metadata that can resolve back to where that data lives." Future SHARE efforts may sound "absurdly ambitious, perhaps," Judy admitted, but the initiative wants to use the ideas in *The Evolving Scholarly Record* to lead conversations about further embedding librarians in the research process and about what type of data to collect. Also, these broadening roles may require new relationships. "We'll need to continue to think of those links with new kinds of partners that can help the library community make this transformation," Judy added. "The stakeholder ecosystem supports these shifting roles, which I think is great." **** Services related to SHARE *The Evolving Scholarly Record* report <http://www.oclc.org/research/publications/library/2014/oclcresearch-evolvin…> OCLC Research <http://www.oclc.org/research.html> Serving research libraries <http://www.oclc.org/en-US/rlibs.html> SHARE at a glance - Developed in 2013 from a partnership among the Association of Research Libraries, the Association of American Universities and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and in a technology partnership with the Center for Open Science - Mission is to maximize research impact by making a comprehensive inventory of research widely discoverable, accessible and reusable - Funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation - Consists of an Advisory Board, Operations Group and a Working Group made up of diverse constituencies and stakeholders - Calling for metadata providers to register with SHARE Notify, now in beta release -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

DATA, DATA, ALL AROUND
by Ragaavendra R 22 May '15

DATA, DATA, ALL AROUND Last week when we raised a question about organisations suffering from the Data Rich Insight Poor (DRIP) syndrome, we received a lot of feedback from our readers. Some of them asked questions about how organisations can find out if they suffer from an insight deficiency and a data surplus. This article attempts to put that in perspective. Data and culture While it's a no-brainer that data and insights go hand in hand, experts say that organisational culture plays a huge role in how organisations can massage the data to work in their favour. For example, companies in the West such as eBay, Amazon or Google possess an organisational culture that motivates all employees to use data for decision-making. "In India, it is doubtful that this sort of culture permeates organisations," says S Bharadhwaj, the Dr Bala V and Vasantha Balachandran Chair Professor of Marketing, Director (Research) at Great Lakes Institute of Management. Shireesh Joshi, head - strategic marketing, Godrej Group, says that it's a bit like conducting R&D within the marketing function. "You need an experimental entrepreneurial culture where there is someone mucking around in the data and identifying some of these patterns. You have to do it on faith, and staff it right and support it right for it to generate something, much like any other R&D," he says. The people working on it need to be able generate hypothesis and imagine connections to be able to uncover patterns, like the famous case of retailer Target identifying pregnancy in a high school student even before her father did. "You also need good-quality data. So your input systems need to be impeccable. And of course you obviously need machines fast enough to crunch the volumes of data you need to. And once you find that first insight that gets you new revenue, that faith becomes religion," says Joshi. Mind the DRIP Bharadhwaj points out to some early signs that can identify that an organisation suffers from DRIP. Some warning signs may be the obvious ones - than an organisation has access to lots of data but rarely uses them for decision-making. He explains that organisations could do a simple test to find out if they are at risk. If a company has X amount of data in 2015, and it has 2X in 2016, and finds that the decision-making process is pretty much the same in 2016 and the decision quality has not improved, then it means that it is not utilising the data well enough or is collecting the wrong kind of data. Joshi agrees. "If you have lots of data about your business but your actions based on analysis of that is not driving up revenue or reducing costs then you have a DRIP problem." Of course, no company can say that it does not have enough data points. "There is data everywhere, not just in transactions," says Joshi, and adds that data can be found in incoming calls to company's service numbers, in online comments and consumer behaviour. "If you haven't investigated those then you have more basic DRIP problem," he says. Making the octopus dance Any organisation that is obsessed with just one arm of the data stream is getting into the DRIP syndrome. "Obsession with just the sales numbers or with the consumer panel data will take you down the DRIP path," says MG Ambi Parameswaran, executive director, FCB Ulka advertising. Sometimes it takes simple steps like getting your marketing teams to sit together to avoid getting into this trap. Unfortunately, teams do not sit together for weeks together because of reasons ranging from travel and regional meetings to dealer meetings, consumer groups and activation plans. "The marketing team has also become very large in companies. Add to this the growing number of specialist communication agencies to brief and debrief. Forget insight, sometimes even the data stays in silos for months," says Parameswaran. He points out that some of the smarter companies are implementing a process of pooling all resources together to ensure that the various arms of the data octopus speak to each other. While actions like creating a Consumer Insights Head have been tried out, these have an inherent danger of becoming a staff function and getting clubbed as a part of the market research team. Like most good actions even this would need to be driven from the top. Parameswaran says, "The path to insight rich life has to be driven from the top. In the better companies the CEOs are themselves involved in bringing all the teams together. That is a good place to start." "Global Open Access List (Successor of AmSci)
by Siva Shankar Kimidi 22 May '15

22 May '15

Dear Moderator: May I kindly request you to share this information in the forum. Thank you very much Regards Siva Shankar K --------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bosman, J.M. (Jeroen) <j.bosman(a)uu.nl> Date: Fri, May 22, 2015 at 2:11 AM Subject: [GOAL] International survey on scholarly communication - and its relevance for open access To: "Global Open Access List (Successor of AmSci) (goal(a)eprints.org)" < goal(a)eprints.org> Dear all, How do open (access) publication strategies fit into a research workflow? Do researchers use Google Drive instead of Word? Papers instead of Endnote? Google Scholar instead of Scopus? Megajournals instead of topical journals? ResearchGate instead of repositories? We are engaged in an ongoing effort to chart the evolving landscape of scholarly communication ( http://dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.1286826) New tools are constantly being developed, as reflected in our list of 400+ scholarly communication tools (http://bit.ly/innoscholcomm-list) Researchers vote with their feet on these changes by adopting or rejecting new modes of working. With an international survey we intend to investigate how tool usage varies by field, country and position. The survey will run until February 2016. *A SURVEY. WHERE? HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?* If you have not yet done so, please take this graphical survey: https://innoscholcomm.typeform.com/to/Csvr7b?source=ML People tell us it is easy and fun to fill it out by just clicking the tools you use. It takes 8-12 minutes to complete and you can opt to receive a visual characterization of your workflow compared to that of your peer group. *FOR WHOM?* Anyone carrying out research (from Master’s students to professors), or supporting research (such as librarians, publishers and funders) can participate. *HOW CAN I HELP?* Kind of you to ask! If you want to help make this a success please consider passing it along to people not on this list (researchers, librarians etc.). And yes, feel free to share the link on your website, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook etc.. More specifically, do you represent an institution/society that wishes to promote this survey among its members? Then please contact us. We can arrange a special URL that will enable us to provide you with resulting data for just your organization. That way you can see what tools your members are using, compared to overall usage patterns. We do the work, you get the (anonymized) data. *PRELIMINARY RESULTS* We will post preliminary results here: https://101innovations.wordpress.com/ On this site, you can also find background information on the survey. Eventually we will share our (thoroughly anonymized) data. Would you like to work with those data? We are interested to hear what kind of analyses you would like to carry out or see carried out! There are many hypotheses that can be tested with the data that comes from this survey. In the field of Open Access I can think of many: - Do researchers choose either Gold or Green OA or do they combine these approaches? - Are researchers that share in an early phase (workflows, data, posters) more likely to also publish OA or archive their papers in repositories? - Do researchers use search tools that have an option to restrict to publications that are OA available? - etc. The data also allows to discern between different positions, affiliation countries and career lengths. Please support this research by taking the survey or promoting it. Many thanks! *CONTACT* Bianca Kramer @MsPhelps b.m.r.kramer(a)uu.nl Jeroen Bosman @jeroenbosman j.bosman(a)uu.nl (both at Utrecht University Library in The Netherlands) (please excuse any cross posting) ------------------------------------------------------ *------------------------------* Jeroen Bosman, faculty liaison for the Faculty of Geosciences Utrecht University Library <http://www.uu.nl/library> email: j.bosman(a)uu.nl telephone: +31.30.2536613 mail: Postbus 80124, 3508 TC, Utrecht, The Netherlands visiting address: room 2.50, Heidelberglaan 3, Utrecht web: Jeroen Bosman <http://www.uu.nl/university/library/en/disciplines/geo/Pages/ContactBosman.…> twitter @jeroenbosman/ @geolibrarianUBU -- Regards Siva Shankar K Mob: +919908035478 -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
