Wiley Library Awards: Just a Private Initiative

Dear Sir/Madam, This post is in continuation with the ongoing discussion on The Wiley Library Awards. Wiley India is a major publishing house having decades of experience of doing business in publishing industry. It is a private player and we have to see this initiative as another means of expanding their business in India. India and other Asian countries have become major business destinations for US and other European big business houses including for private players involved in publishing books and scholarly publications. So they look for expanding their business interest in third world countries through various means, for instance organizing group meeting in well-known tourist destinations, offering freebies and providing financial assistance for organizing various events and also bringing newsletter and magazines to attract clients. This Wiley Award is also such an event to expand their business. To expand their business they have to have huge corpse of data about financial conditions of the libraries to plan and make their future strategies. So it is up to the participating libraries to decide whether they should participate in this kind of events which is organized by a private publishing house which has business interest. To your post the Wiley Marketing Team has replied on 11 Oct 2017 through the LIS forum. The question is: how these independent jury members are selected and whom they represent? Again we have our own rights to participate or not participate, same also to the Wiley, as an independent private publishing house they have their rights to organize this kind of event or not, to expand their business interest. Congrats for such type of research which we need because some are busy in wasting money for their own money and some bother about public money. Once again congrats ! Use of OA journals levying APC has increased from 242 journals and 2,557 papers in 2010 to 328 journals and 3,634 papers in 2014. We estimate that India is potentially spending about US$ 2.4 million annually on APCs paid to OA journals and the amount would be much more if we add APCs paid to make papers published in hybrid journals open access. It would be prudent for Indian authors to make their work freely available through interoperable repositories, a trend that is growing in Latin America and China, especially when funding is scarce. Indian Statistical Institute Documentation Research and Training Centre Seminar-5 Digital preservation: an overview Abstract As a speciality, digital preservation has to be one of the most interesting areas ever to emerge in the domain of information science. The Preservation of Digital Materials, Library Technology Reports 44:2(2008). Digital preservation is a process of storing and preserving objects so that they can be used and reused in the future. Digital preservation is done in sequential steps to ensure that the information is not only preserved but can be used again. There are various reference models which provide a set of guidelines to perform the digital preservation, such as OAIS. Some of the major issues which are faced in the area of digital preservation are long term preservation, retrieval, and degradation. To solve these issues literature has provided some preservation goals such as availability, authenticity, and viability. In this seminar, we will discuss what digital preservation is, its need, the issues over it, and the strategies that have been made to overcome these issues. We shall also discuss the reference model OAIS, preservation metadata, the planning tools for digital preservation like PLATO and PLATTER. We will conclude the seminar with the discussion on best practices for digital preservation, the major initiatives taken, and also what could be future trends emerging through digital preservation.
