Dear All Please find below details of a one-day in-depth workshop on Greenstone Digital Library software, organized on 26th April 2003. We regret for the short notice. Originally planned as a local programme, we decided to make it open in response to requests from several professionals. We hope this effort will be found useful. Regards NCSI-NET Alumni Association ---------------------------------------------------------- NCSI-NET (The Alumni Association of NCSI, IISc) is pleased to announce A one-day in-depth awareness programme on The Greenstone Digital Library Software (GSDL) 26th Saturday 2003 Venue: National Centre for Science Information (NCSI), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. 9.00 AM to 5.30 PM (Registration: 8.30 AM) About GSDL: The Greenstone Digital Library Software (GSDL) is rapidly emerging as a leading software for developing and distributing digital library collections. Greenstone provides a new way of organizing information and publishing it on the Internet or on CD-ROM. It is produced by the New Zealand Digital Library Project at the University of Waikato, and developed and distributed in cooperation with UNESCO and the Human Info NGO. It is freely available, open-source software, issued under the terms of the GNU General Public License. The aim of the software is to empower users, particularly in universities, R&D libraries, and other public service institutions, to build their own digital libraries. About this workshop: The workshop will cover the latest version of GSDL (2.39) and will include extensive practical demonstrations of its various features, including the following: - Overview of GSDL software - Installation and configuration - Collection building and configuration - Search and retrieval - Interface customization and multilingual support - CD-ROM publishing and administration At the end of the workshop you will be in a position to make informed use of GSDL and develop your own digital library collections. Instructors: NCSI staff, having extensive practical experience with GSDL, will conduct the training programme. NCSI has been an early adopter of GSDL in India and has been involved in beta testing of the software and has already conducted a successful national level workshop on this topic during 15.4.2002 to 20.4.2002. Hi everyone, This mail that has come from T.B. Rajashekar has really made me think about raising this query - Do we really have some good quality advance courses for working library science professionals as well(other than offered by NISCAIR). This course that NCSI is offering is about one and half year duration(Information and Knowledge Management) and needs full time devotion on learner's part. The contents of the course are quiet good and relevant for working persons like me. I find that even after working for 10+ years, I am interested to go for this training. The only barrier is that I am full time working and settled in Delhi. It is a general feeling amongst library professionals that after doing Masters in LIS only you are left with M.Phil or Phd to upgrade your knowledge or qualification, and going for such higher education is not that easy for everyone. The point behind writing all this is that we should think about organizing such good courses thru distance education program for working professionals also. If any one in the field has some information about such program that are already available, Pl let me know. If bodies like NISSAT/NISCAIR/NCSI start doing some positive move in this direction, I strongly believe that it is really going to help professional like me who constantly on the look for something new to learn, implement and create/add value to work. lis-forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in Dear Professionals COMLA solicits contributions for COMLA Bulletin, the details are attached below Regards Anjali RVP- Asia Region, COMLA COMLA Bulletin Notes for Contributors Contributions to the COMLA Bulletin may take one of the following forms: (a) Original articles (b) News items (c) Book reviews Contributions are published only in English, and are subject to review by the Editor. Minor corrections will be made to grammatical and linguistic errors without changing the meaning of the text. The desired length of articles is 2000 to 5000 words. Each article should be accompanied by an abstract of 75 to 100 words as well as a brief statement concerning the author's professional status and experience. Authors should also provide contact information including a street or postal address and an email address. Authors should remember that acronyms and abbreviations should be spelt out the first time they are used in the text, and that each article must contain sufficient background for each reader to understand it, regardless of their professional training. Illustrative material containing statistical data should be presented as charts or diagrams. Photographs should be submitted in TIF format or as positive prints (hard copy). The article should, if at all possible, be submitted either as an email attachment or on a 3.5-inch floppy diskette, using Microsoft Word. Those who do not have access to a computer or email should ensure that the article is submitted as a typewritten manuscript. It is the responsibility of the author to obtain copyright clearance for any copyrighted material which is included. Articles are published at the discretion of the Editor.
