CONCREATE STEP ZERO: Select and make an email discussion list as Official Discussion List of LIS Indian Community. There is a need for Indian Library and Information Science Community to exchange and discussion various issues related to the profession and work. It may be possible if we encourage all the professionals to subscribe to one email discussion group. This may be designated as official discussion forum. [Official here should mean the common voice of the community]. People should be encouraged discuss and debate (more useful) various issues" [email groups are meant for that only]. It should not be a low volume and "unidirectional" group. Moderation should be minimal and rare [ to stop virus attacks, marketing emails personal attacks etc]. There can also be web/email conferences and delibrations. Over and above there should be BELONGINESS AMOUNG THE COMMUNITY. There could also be ranking of the community members based on some criteria but definately based on contribution towards this virtual community. Further, I propose LIS-FORUM (Promoted by Dr T.B Rajashekar) be this official email disscussion group, because [perhaps] it is almost a decade old now. BTW, have anybody noticed the wonderful work being down by http://www.infolibrarian.com . Only thing they have not done is "that they do not bost off who they are?" [ I am in no way related to it]. Sometimes they take the content directly from the web and insert it as their own work. Other times they take parts of the work and insert it into their own, often forgetting to quote the source. At best, they use it as reference material to write their own work but often do not indicate the source. Some teachers only require references from printed sources. Teachers in all academic areas should be concerned because often they won't know if they are evaluating the student's work, a respectable outside source or a quack's eerie sense of humor. That is why many schools are now using website evaluation worksheets as part of the homework completion material. By not using them, schools are missing the opportunity to fulfill important educational standards. Using a website evaluation worksheet helps students recognize authorship and helps them learn to respect intellectual property rights. Standard 2 of the North American Education Technology Standards (NETS) and other international standards place much importance on learning to use technology resources responsibly. It is important that students learn to indicate website references, using the URL, as well as printed references. Secondly, a good website evaluation worksheet will guide a student to properly evaluate a website and distinguish "good" sources of information from "bad" ones. This helps student develop their critical thinking abilities. Not everything in the World Wide Web is informational and students must learn to select respectable sources of knowledge or, at least, beware possibly tainted information. In a sixth grade science class, a teacher asked her students to search websites and find three important discoveries made possible by space travel. She gave students a list of websites which included NASA, CNN and other good sites. She included other sites to test her students. One was about space aliens and had links to "Elvis lives" websites. Another presented a detailed "scientific" analysis proving that squirrels are aliens. In social studies classes, website evaluation worksheets help students identify compromised opinions. Another sixth grade class did a project on the Middle East about the role religion plays in regional conflicts. By recognizing the URL and the author's resume they were able to determine what his biases were likely to be. This data was part of filling the website evaluation worksheet. Both of these projects, and others reviewed for this article, were designed by teams made up of class teachers and computer lab teachers, and all used website evaluation sheets to document the student's research and webquest results. Webquests are web pages that gather different resources and make them easily available for student projects. The computer teacher prepares them in conjunction with the regular class teachers. Students, specially younger ones, find it easier to simply click on the screen and access predetermined contents. Access to search engines, such as Google or AltaVista are also included for more advanced students who want to be creative. Website evaluation worksheets document the student's navigation through the web and are part of the project completion requirements. Dear Colleagues: Dear All: The enthusiasm shown by DRTC students through their active participation in the form of valuable postings and sending responses to queries in the LIS-Forum is praiseworthy and worthy of emulation by one and all. I have personally benefitted a lot from their contribution. This is a bright ray of hope. Perhaps, because of lack of Internet access, students of LIS from Indian universities are unable to participate. How about providing Internet access to all the Departments of Library and Information Science in India and offer facilities to LIS faculty and students to handle "live" reference queries (under the guidance of their Reference Tutor) from the public in the ASK YOUR LIBRARIAN service?This would offer the LIS students "real life" examples of the queries they would be facing in their career in future. More than the IT, we have to regain the joy of library service to make our professional life much more meaningful and inspiring. Also, there is an urgent need to make SOUL package an integral component of all our LIS education programmes at the university level. Once this is done, we would have within a couple of years, LIS manpower capable of appreciating and handling properly the SOUL software. It is hoped that INFLIBNET under the dynamic leadership of Dr TAV Murthy would break institutional barriers and strengthen all the DLIS in the country to make them adequately IT- equipped so that they would be participating actively in the HRD to support the INFLIBNET project. It is high time to recognise all the DLISs in the country as the stakeholders and beneficiaries of INFLIBNET programme. The logic is simple: if you train a member of the library staff, he/she would be often be contributing to his/her parent library. But, if you train a member of the faculty or student of DLIS in an Indian university, the benefits would be far-reaching and percolate to various sections of the society. Thank you Sincerely T.V.
