Loss of books in Libraries

Dear Colleagues The UGC (India) Library Committee forcefully recommends to write off an inevitable loss @ 2 for every 1000 books issued. However in an open access library, annual loss of 3 volumes for every 1000 issues should be considered as a normal loss in normal circumstances as recommended by Dr. Ranganathan REF: Mittal, R. L. You may find it useful to visit the following website for the guidelines issued by the Government of India on this issue. Unless it is proved that the loss of books is due to the dishonestry or negligence on the part of the librarian, it is unfair and unreasonable to penalise the librarian. http://www.kkbooks.com/ Click Conversion Rate Link at the top. Loss of three volumes per one thousand volumes issued/consulted in a year may be taken as reasonable provided such loss cannot be attributed to dishonesty or negligence on the part of the Librarian. Loss of a book of the value exceeding Rs.200/- (Rupees two hundred) and the books of special nature and rarity shall invaribly be investigated and consequential action taken. Workshop on ICT for Information Managment at IIT Bombay

Dear All The Central Library, IIT Bombay has planned to organize a 5-days Training Workshop on ICT for Information Management in S&T Institutions on 16-20 May 2005. The main objective of the workshop is to expose participants to the state-of-the art in library systems and services and how ICT can transform it into a more efficient, knowledge sharing organization facing new challenges and fulfilling aspirations of its users. The important topics to be covered in the workshop include : · Overview of information communication technology applications in the libraries, · Web designing, development of library website · Web-based information sources and services, subject portals · Digital / electronic sources, e-journals, e-books, e-databases, leveraging INDEST consortium for augmenting more e-resources · Development of digital library, hybrid library · Open archives, GSDL, eprints, Dspace, · RFID Only 30-35 participants, on first-come-first-served basis, will be taken for the course from IITs, IISc, NITs, other engineering colleges, scientific and technical institutions. Well, we can not compare share purchase with information pickup.. if u still insist it to be the same, let us ask an honest question to those who did online share purchase WITHOUT expert advice and how many of them actually lost money bec their knowledge abt the company was superfluous i.e. something similar when u get first few hits on public search engines..If u get it right once does not guarantee anything. Idea is not to impose ourselves but to save the time of the users by giving them relevant info with least of the noise content. Ask any scientist who has filed the patent and has done a prior art search..To find out a seemingly simple concept, device, technique hidden under a mass of literaute is a task in itself. This is in the light of availability of built-in expert systems and full text search capabilities of the databases.
