Open access is seen by some as a possible solution to the increasing price of serials and as a way for governmental funding agencies to receive a better return on investment. Open source software can benefit libraries by lowering initial and ongoing costs, eliminating vendor lock-in, and allowing for greater flexibility. Open standards allow for interoperability to exist between diverse library resources and eases data migration between systems. It brings together full-text, scholarly materials in the Information Sciences from many different OAI-PMH compliant repositories. DL-Harvest is using PKP Harvester with software improvements for flow control, sets, and advanced searching, that have been developed by DLIST Graduate Research Assistant, Joseph Roback. Besides DLIST, the current list of 11 archives harvested includes selective harvesting from ArXiV. DL-Harvest is available at http://dlharvest.sir.arizona.edu. DLIST, http://dlist.sir.arizona.edu/, is a service of the School of Information Resources and Library Science and the Learning Technologies Center, University of Arizona. Seed monies for DLIST are from the University of Arizona College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Proposition 301 funded initiative of the Internet Technology Commerce and Design Institute, now the Arizona Center for Information Science and Technology. DLIST is running on EPrints2 archive-creating software, which generates eprints archives that are compliant with the Open Archives Protocol for Metadata Harvesting OAI v2.0.

Google gets personal

Google unveiled a new service on Thursday that lets users combine some of the company's internet offerings into a single package, a move that takes it closer to the portal model used by rivals such as Yahoo! and Microsoft's MSN. The new personalised Google homepage, which allows users to select elements they want to add to the pagesite, also represents the first alternative Google offers to its distinctive clutter-free search engine. Under a project labelled "Fusion", the company said the personalised homepage was part of a series of moves it was planning to bring its fast-growing range of services closer together. Until now, Google has offered each of its web services, from its news service to Gmail, on a standalone basis, rather than as part of an integrated package of services for internet users. The option to personalise web pages has already become a big draw for some other internet companies. According to comScore Networks, which measures web traffic, a quarter of the visitors to Yahoo! also visit My Yahoo!, the company's personalised service. Explaining the decision to offer an alternative to the familiar stripped-down Google web site, Marissa Mayer, director of consumer products, said that Google now offered enough "push" services of its own, which deliver information automatically to users, to make it worth aggregrating the information in a single place. Users of the new homepage, available in test form, can add boxes containing things like the latest news headlines from Google News, the latest messages received in their Gmail accounts and information supplied by Google's weather service. Google said the new service would eventually incorporate web content and services provided by other companies. Like My Yahoo!, the company said it planned to let users select "feeds" of information from other websites to display on the homepage. It also hoped to offer internet email services by other companies, though technical issues still needed to be resolved, Ms Mayer added. John Battelle, a University of California professor and author of The Search, a forthcoming book on the industry, says Google's move renders moot its previous statements about not playing in the same game as Yahoo, America Online and Microsoft. "This is tying together all their services into one, integrated interface and gives Google a platform to think strategically for the future," Battelle said. Yahoo, the Internet's most visited Web site, attracted 98.7 million users in March, according to Internet measurement service Nielsen/NetRatings. Google was No. 4, with 75.1 million users. Yahoo's MyYahoo attracted 21 million users in March, Nielsen says. Google executives spent much time Thursday talking about its mission of organizing the world's information. CEO Eric Schmidt said he looks at it as a "300-year" problem and said Google has much work to do. Google believes one big growth area is working on translating languages for Web sites. Executives showed examples of how Google is tackling that. Google Vice President Alan Eustace noted that when Google can serve all 198 languages represented in the United Nations, "It really will usher in an era when everyone will have access to all the world's information." Google showed off new 3-D mapping technology for "Google Earth," a site coming next month. It offers aerial satellite views of anywhere on the planet, similar to Google's current map product, but more detailed. "You can travel anywhere in the world now, for free," Google co-founder Sergey Brin said, in demonstrating the product. "I've never been to the Grand Canyon. But now I don't have to." Anniversaries are moments to introspect and prospect. We have done our bit, but still have miles to go and promises to keep. We have had our share of trials, triumphs and tribulations. As a mark of its 40th year anniversary, the Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS) is celebrating its fruitful presence by organising a seminar on 'Repositioning the information profession in the market place'. The information profession is in a constant state of flux. Several factors have engendered such a scenario. Information is all pervasive and is the legitimate concern of many a discipline from anthropology to zoology. The confusion between the content and the container (McLuhian Media vs. Message) technologies is another factor. The Technology centric character has challenged the profession to adopt and adapt. Consequently, the profession of information is constantly engaged in a process of finding its niche and quite often faces competition from other claimants to the information domain. The market driven nature of the profession, places its own demands and necessitates nimble footedness in the balancing act. The present age of transformative Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has accentuated the complexity of finding the equilibrium. Given this backdrop, library schools around the world are engaged in evolving diverse strategies to confront the challenges before the LIS education. Need for focused advocacy to promote OA

Friends: Here is an item from Peter Suber's blog. Despite so much being written about open access, a very large proportion of researchers is not aware of it even in an advanced country like Germany. please read on. --- Spreading the word about OA Richard Seitmann, "Open access" is practically unknown among scientists as an alternative for publications, Heise Online, May 24, 2005. Excerpt: 'The secretary-general of the conference of deans of higher education (HRK), Christiane Ebel-Gabriel, explained today at the opening of the symposium with the title " The Future of Scientific Communication -- Open Access", which will be taking place today and tomorrow in Göttingen, that directors of institutions of higher education will have to "see ensuring access to scientific publications and research results as a strategic task much more than they currently do." Two years ago, the HRK called for a refocus of scientific publications and information exchanges in light of the crisis among journals at the time because skyrocketing subscription prices both for conventional and electronic scientific journals had been leading people to cancel their subscriptions, paradoxically making access to published research results even harder despite the Internet. "The financial pressure on the field of science continues to grow," Ebel-Gabriel explained. She regretted that the current alternatives for publication in "open access" journals and on institute servers have not been used to the full. The secretary-general quoted figures from a still unpublished study (PowerPoint file) by the German Research Society, which found that three of four scientists surveyed and more than 85% of social scientists and professors of the humanities are not aware that open access is one possibility for publication.' ---- So what is needed is focused advocacy and awareness campaigns.
