Dear All, First of all wish you all a very happy, prosperous and peaceful new year 2006!!! I am a librarian in a Medium Scale Industry. I do also have experience in another three of such industries. Most of the Employers treat "LIBRARIAN" as a "C" grade staff. That's what I have experienced. My intention is to get information : 1. How we should change their mentality? 2. What are the actions to be taken? 3. Mostly they are treating Library as unwanted department, therefore giving less important. I tried all types of strategies to make Library "a temple of Knowledge" but failed. Please let me know what should we do? 4. Why academic libraries are not considering us to give a chance to serve them? 5. What Library professionals' Movement can be done against these injustices? There are many more. Dear all It is really good to see the topic article indexing is the focus of discussion in LIS forum for some time. I fully agree with the comments made by Mr C U Navalgund that this is a value added service mostly for in-house members and should be taken up by professionals if time and manpower permit. In GIPE Library, we have been bringing out 'Fortnightly List of articles on India' since 1967 which has been continuing uninterruptedly till date. We do index all articles on India that appear in all Indian and foreign journals and four financial newspapers which have been subscribed by our Library. In fact, four years back, in our Institute itself, some discussion was going on about the viability of this service when we started computerisation of the library. However, after examining several such services and databases of articles, we have decided to continue with our service. The service has been well-appreciated by our faculty and also outside members. Even there are non-members who subscribe to our articles list in hard copy format. Thus, from my own experience, I strongly feel the need of such service at least in libraries attached to such research institutions who do research pertaining to socio-economic problems of India. Friends: People often ask about the benefits of OA. Here is a case in point from India. The Journal of Postgraduate Medicine (Bombay) has become very popular ever since it became an OA journal, says Dr D K Sahu, a champion of OA in India. I wish the journals published by government agencies such as CSIR go OA! Incidentally Dr Sahu may kindly clarify if the downloads refer to full artcles or pages. Best wishes. Arun JPGM registers over 100 thousand article downloads in a month The number of article downloads per month has crossed the figure of 100,000. Ninety thousand three hundred twenty five unique visitors downloaded 110,218 article pages in the month of November. These downloads are from the journal's primary website (i.e. www.jpgmonline.com) Apart from this website, the full text of the journal is also available from Bioline International, OAI-complaint repository at the University of Toronto and from a number of secondary aggregating agencies such as Thomson Gale, EBSCO Publishing and ProQuest. Thus, the actual downloads per month are much higher. Open access sources, DOAJ, PubMed and Wikipedia were amongst the top five referrers (except search engines) for the journal's website. Over 270 institutions utilize the LinkOut facilities from PubMed to access the journal. The reasons are many. Many libraries do not even have their entire collection in electronic form with all the necessary fields. Even the large libraries do not have time nor the resources needed to undertake such collosal work (if someone says so, then it must be only a sample and not in full). Perhaps it may be possible in specialized libraries devoted to a narrow subject area (I have seen this at SERC in Chennai being done by Dr. Chitra Hariharan). Secondly, I think that there is no need to duplicate the work of database providers who do it in a better (standard) way than we can, and many libraries have access to them. So lets not worry to re-invent-the wheel. Perhaps, what we can do is to create guidelines to do such work, train people, offer consultancy, and offer the manpower support to database producers in India.
