NET Relief not fair

Dear members, This has reference to LIS Forum message on NET Relief mooted for M.Phil and Ph.D holders. Since I am one among the candidates cleared the UGC NET/SLET, I would like to bring the followings to all members of the LIS forum. Proposing expemtion of UGC NET/SLET for appoinment as Lecturer/A.L or Librarian as the case may be is unfair as thousands of UGC NET/SLET passed hands are awaiting for their chances or working in self support institutes along with others. Particularly, in Tamil Nadu there are more than 100 hands with UGC NET/SLET awaiting for advertisement but no adds are coming. Few institutions are unable to appoint suitable hands as there are stays. Every year more than 2500 candidates pass the UGC NET/SLET. The UGC's website is the crystal clear evident for this. Now a days M.Phil and Ph.D degrees can also be completed through distance mode and part-time respectively. Any one who has passed the M.L.I.S can get addmitted in to these degrees. Spot admission, admission on the door steps and admission through private study centres are done now a days. Not less than 5000 candates per year complete M.Phil degree through distance mode. It is surprising to note that the candidates who are capable of obtaining M.Phil and Ph.D degrees are unable to clear the UGC NET/SLET but want exmption from this. No doubt that only meritorious candates are clearing the UGC NET/SLET. As suggested by Mr. S. Chakraborty, Kolkata and Anup Kumar Das, New Delhi, the professional associations can work for producing more NET/SLET passed candidates besides requesting the apex body to produce more numbers of the NET/SLET qualifieds instead of exemption. Dear friends, I have different opinion. First of all I would like to say that getting PhD degree is a dream of a person. This must be regarded as the highest degree with respect. How can you underestimate those who have done only M.Phil/PhD and have no NET/SLET qualification? Do you want to say that you do MLIS and qualify NET/SLET for the Assistant Librarian? Thats it? You don't need to do M.Phil and PhD? Why don't then people recommend UGC to scrap M.Phil and PhD if it is not considered as merits of a candidate? Why do you consider meritorious to only those who have cleared NET/SLET? Achieving Higher qualifications depends on individual to individual. There are numerous examples of scholares who do not possess any M.Phil/PhD/Net/Slet and have proved to be subject expert and possess very good research skills. They have also taught as visiting professors in good universities. I think NET/SLET is an imposed qualification on Librarian. Just think about how many years do you need to spend in getting BLIS, MLIS and M.Phil/PhD after achieving excellence in Academics. Do you think that an engineer who has done Associateship from NISCAIR should again qualify NET/SLET just to prove his candidature whether he is meritorious or not? I do not think NET/SLET should be compulsory for those who have done M.Phil/PhD. Dear All/Susmita I agree with you that NET should remain an eligibility criteria for Assistant Librarian/ College Librarians as it shows a nation wide acceptance. The merit must be honoured. I have done both but still I feel that NET should remain on top as it gives you an equal status as a professional. It subsides the difference of the different universities from where we had passed our M.L.I.Sc., hence I feel that it gives an equal status. Dear All, Please refer to e-mail message titled "[LIS-FORUM] NET relief mooted for MPhil, PhD students" at LIS Forum dated 21/04/06. I don't know much about south India, but in North India for every single post advertised, there is more than 100 NET/ SLET qualified applicants. Only one person will get the job and rest people will be left behind. The job market is not expanding enough in this sector where the persons will get permanent jobs with a proper UGC scale. So, there is no rationale to exempt NET/SLET clause for College Librarian/ Univ Asst. Librarian/ Lecturer post. Hope, UGC/ AICTE first give opportunities to NET/SLET qualified un-employed LIS professionals, then think of exemptions of non-qualified professionals. Quoting their new website: Congress is pushing a law that would abandon Network Neutrality, the Internet's First Amendment. Network neutrality prevents companies like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast from deciding which Web sites work the best - based on who pays them the most. Your local library shouldn't have to outbid Barnes & Noble for the right to have its Web site open quickly on your computer. Net Neutrality allows everyone to compete on a level playing field and is the reason that the Internet is a force for economic innovation, civic participation and free speech. If the public doesn't speak up now, Congress will cave to a multi-million dollar lobbying campaign by telephone and cable companies that want to decide what you do, where you go, and what you watch online. This isn't just speculation - we've already seen what happens elsewhere when the Internet's gatekeepers get too much control. Last year, Canada's version of AT&T - Telus- blocked their Internet customers from visiting a Web site sympathetic to workers with whom Telus was negotiating. And Shaw, a major Canadian cable TV company, charges an extra $10 a month to subscribers who dare to use a competing Internet telephone service.
