Dear Members , From last twenty days we have received so many massages on UGC NET exemption for M.Phil,Phd students why you Library Professionals are taking it unstandardization of Education . You know level of research work in our country from last ten years are going down at very rapid pace because students intend to go to prepare for exam and they bye pass the reseach ,intellctual process of education . Exemption for M.Phil and Phd student is the only way to incease the research level. Think about research in scinece and other stream where a single idea if you generate and patent it can earn good reputation and money for country. So don't think exemption of NET for M.Phil and Phd student is decreasing our education standard. In my opinion We should impliment the NET Exam to get Admission in M.Phil and only after M.Phil students can enrollin Phd this should be the model . secondly if any one who cleared UGC _NEt in library science with old traditional syallabus how can teach new concept and technology application in Libraries to students . if UGC Net exam cleared person don't have good Communication skills how he/she can teach student ? I have seen so many students who cleared NET exam and could ' manage to get any Job in Private College . National Workshop on "Open Archives Initiative (OAI) and Institutional Repositories with DSPACE" to be held at ISEC, Bangalore between 26-27, June 2006 The Institute for social and Economic Change (ISEC) is a multi-disciplinary research and training institute in Social Sciences. It is one of the major ICSSR research organizations established by Professor V K R V Rao, in the year 1972 in Bangalore. ISEC Library and ICSSR will be jointly conducting a National Workshop on " Open Archives Initiative and Institutional Repositories with DSPACE" between 26-27, June 2006 at the campus of ISEC, Nagarabhavi PO, Dr. V.K.R.V Rao Avenue, Bangalore-560 072. The Institute is well equipped with fully air-conditioned seminar halls, a computer lab, a meeting room with Multi-media and OHP facilities. The Workshop will arrange invited lectures cum demonstrations and practical experience on computers (afternoon sessions) by eminent scholars and experts in their respective individual subject fields. The topics to be covered in the above workshop are: 1. Introduction on "Digitization of Library and Information Centres". 2. Open Source Digital Software for libraries 3. DSPACE Software 4. Open Archives Initiative (OAI) and Institutional Repositories 5. Creation of OAI and Institutional Repositories with DSPACE Regisration fee: There is no registration fee. RFID: Beyond the Drive for Five

Greetings, Five cents for a RFID tag is said to be the tipping point for its adoption. "We've been talking about the mythical five-cent price point for years," notes Mike Liard, RFID practice director for Venture Development Corp. "Is it possible? Yes. But it may not necessarily be the type of tag you're looking for." Indeed, makers of RFID chips know this, which is why most haven't rushed to put nickel tags on the market. Instead, they've been content to cut prices at a steady rate of about 5 to 10 percent per year since 2000, while simultaneously improving the technology. As a result, users of the tags are already employing them in applications undreamed of a decade ago, despite their inability to reach the elusive nickel price point. The bottom line is that while RFID vendors have been lowering their prices and improving their technology, they've been carving out new niches for themselves. Increasingly, RFID tags are being used on pallets, cartons, garments, luggage, DVD cases, pill bottles and library books. And in the future, experts foresee more use in low-cost everyday items, from lipstick cases to cereal boxes. While they won't replace the bar code any time soon, they nevertheless offer non-line-of-sight capability, which means they can gather information of their whereabouts without being individually handled. As a result, they're capable of deterring theft and counterfeiting. Why does adoption of RFID always seem to lag behind forecasts? Dear Professionals, The decision of UGC to give exemption to the M.Phil and Ph.D. Holders is not fair. It may be better if the UGC has rectified the defect if any in the NET exam. Maximum, the UGC can give exception for candidates with MPhil/PhD and some years of teaching/professional experience. Qualifing the NET by their students is a proud to the colleges/universities. If so, we can think who is favouring the present decision of the UGC. People who can not clear NET will be against the NET Exam. The arguments favouring the UGC decision are that, people are not getting cleared the NET easily. If we favour such arguments, why we want Post Graduate Degrees itself to become teachers. This will be like persons with telant in teaching, but with out subject knowledge. Why we want competitive exams for IAS, job, etc. The selection may be on the basis of marks in qualifying exams. like degree, PG, +2, etc. Another argument was why librarians qualify NET. Since the librarians are not engaged in imparting knowledge and research, of course we should not clear the NET. Moreover, we should not go for MPil/PhD. But, We NEED UGC SCALE. This is our only right as Librarians. Moreover, we should represent to change our designations from librarians/scientists/engineers/ etc. to librarians and if possible, as store keepers. EAS System - Library Security

Dear colleagues in profession, I beg to differ with Gayathri Sen of the PESIT-Engineering College (leaving aside her claim to be the 2nd library in the country to have implemented EAS system!). While observations made by Gayathri Sen must be certainly based on her experiences, it cannot be generalized that the RFID and EAS systems are only for 'show off'. Percolation of RFID in libraries is a good technological advancement in our profession. I have seen this system working very fine, without any hassles, in a number of libraries in India and abroad, and we should really boast of its implementation in Indian libraries. It is unfortunate that Gayathri Sen landed in wrong vendors' land with some infamous product, hence her problems and sufferings. Else her experience could have certainly been of jubilation, pride and exuberance. US consulate had this for other purpose and not for its library. My experience: 1. Not very reliable 2. Return on Investment not good 3. Service is poor. We bought it from Monitor Electronics, Pune but the product was imported. They did not have office in Bangalore and every time we had to bear their conveyence charge plus repair charge whcih worked out to be too expensive in the long run. 4.Service was not immediate because they had to come from Pune. 5. Product acts only as deterrant for stealing, but total loss cannot be prevented. 6. Too many false alarms. 7. Adds only value but not a must buy. 8. You can buy it if you have too much finance to spend, or to show off to others and say you have a very modern library. 9. Newer versions may be slightly bettter. 10. Dear Colleagues: The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (http://www.iimk.ac.in) & the INDEST/AICTE Consortium (http://indest.iitd.ac.in/) are pleased to annouce the joint Workshop on 'Institutional Repositories', scheduled during 17-19 July 2006, at the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK). The objective of this 3-day Workshop is to provide intensive training on building Institutional Repositories (IRs) using the Open Source Software DSpace. The target audience include the librarians, information science and software professionals, and IT faculty belonging to the INDEST/AICTE Consortium Institutions, the academia, Government, Corporate and the NGOs in India. The three-day workshop shall cover Open Access concepts, Scholarly Institutional Repositories, DSpace, and Metadata Standards.
