US DEVELOPS SOFTWARE THAT COULD TRACK GLOBAL PRESS Washington, DNA The US Department of Homeland Security plans to develop software that analyses and summarises opinions expressed in articles, providing a possible tool for better monitoring what is written about the United States in the global press. The department says it will spend 2.4 million dollars over the next three years supporting research at three US universities using computer science to analyze human language in texts. "The work is really designed to get information extraction that would help the DHS review statements for sentiments or beliefs contained in statements, and to provide intelligence analysts within DHS," said Homeland Security spokesperson Christophe Kelly. Workshop on Digital Libraries, New Delhi 31 October ? 3 November 2006 The Workshop on Digital Libraries is being organized by TERI with support from Technology Information Facilitation Programme of Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India. The aim of the Workshop is to equip participants with adequate practical knowledge so as to enable them to efficiently carry out digital library projects. During the two days, we also have InfoTalks - a few in the morning, afternoon & evening each. Each InfoTalk(technical or general) is an introduction to a concept ot forum or resource- technology; tool; a website; an investment idea; a hobby...in 10 to 15 minutes. Each speaker gets a token momento. There is also a Library Quiz about those topics or the Library or Books, where winners get token prizes. One or the other would be interesting to most users. Book Club: Is a monthly hobby club, actually. Each month we had a theme- Music; Poetry; Linux; Photography; Gardening. It is calenderized and held in the Board Room. There are presentations; audiovisuals; discussions; all over the premises. Lessons learnt- the event has to be focussed. It has to be approached in all possible ways- means of presentation. It should be attractive and inviting. It is teamwork- not just library effort. One needs to know the users as people & network with them. Don't leave out anyone (it may sound as if one is pestering busy guys...no problem. During the two days, we also have InfoTalks - a few in the morning, afternoon & evening each. Each InfoTalk(technical or general) is an introduction to a concept ot forum or resource- technology; tool; a website; an investment idea; a hobby...in 10 to 15 minutes. Each speaker gets a token momento. There is also a Library Quiz about those topics or the Library or Books, where winners get token prizes. One or the other would be interesting to most users. Book Club: Is a monthly hobby club, actually. Each month we had a theme- Music; Poetry; Linux; Photography; Gardening. It is calenderized and held in the Board Room. There are presentations; audiovisuals; discussions; all over the premises. Lessons learnt- the event has to be focussed. It has to be approached in all possible ways- means of presentation. It should be attractive and inviting. It is teamwork- not just library effort. One needs to know the users as people & network with them. Don't leave out anyone (it may sound as if one is pestering busy guys...no problem.
