It is going to be a great learning experience for all of us. *XXIII IATLIS National Conference 2006* * * The Internet and the web have made profound impact on the life and work of people. Library and Information Science (LIS) education is not an exception to this phenomenon. Though, UGC Model Curriculum was developed in the year 2001 under the leadership of Prof. C.R. Karisiddappa, yet many changes have taken place since then. It is high time to make the LIS curricula consistent with the market requirements and to reduce the widening gap between professional theory and practice as well. Taking cognizance of ICT enabled developments, it has been decided to organize the XXXIII IATLIS National Conference on the theme Building Curriculum with a Difference: A Vision for LIS Education for 21st Century'. It is hoped that IATLIS 2006 would be a suitable platform to redefine the LIS curricula and vision for the near future. IATLIS Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS) (founded 1969) is a professional association of about 500 teachers and professionals. Since its inception in 1969, IATLIS has been active in taking up several issues of LIS Education in India especially relating to the development of curriculum, teaching methods, infrastructure, teachers' training, etc. It also actively works for the promotion of the professional interests of LIS teachers. As part of its activities, it conducts national seminars, workshops, training programmes etc. It brings out its official organ IATLIS Communication besides publishing pre-conference volumes. Punjabi University, Patiala Punjabi University Patiala, one of the premier institutions of higher education in the north of India, was established on the 30th April, 1962under the Punjabi University Act 1961. This is the second University in the world to be named after a language, the first being Hebrew University of Israel. Although initially the main task before the University was to develop and promote the language of the Punjabi people, it has since evolved into a multi-faceted, multi-faculty educational institution with over fifty five teaching and research departments covering disciplines in of Humanities, Social Sciences, as well as Science and Technology. That same year, two of the 20 suggested names were chosen for the Nobel: Harold E. Varmus and J. Michael Bishop. Subsequently, four more of the 20 received the Prize: Edwin G. Krebs in 1992, Alfred G. Gilman in 1994, Eric R. Kandel in 2000, and Sydney Brenner in 2002. Of course, while six were correct choices, 14 were wrong--or at least wrong to date. He has scripted and directed numerous short films and docu-features and in most instances anchored them. He traveled extensively to make these features, visiting the Soviet Union several times during the dismantling phase of ¡¥glasnost¡Š and ¡¥perestroika¡Š; East Germany (GDR) just before the collapse of the Berlin Wall; Romania in the immediate wake of the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu; several countries in eastern Europe to get a feel at first hand of the collapse of communism in that part of the world; several states in Europe and the USA for a mega feature on Disarmament and Development. Library Hotel From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Library Hotel is a 60-room boutique hotel in New York City, located at 299 Madison Avenue (at 41st Street), near the New York Public Library, Bryant Park, and Grand Central Terminal. The hotel boasts a unique organizing principle: each of its ten guest floors has a theme, designated after a major category of the Dewey Decimal Classification (the 5th floor, for example, is the 500s, the Sciences), with each room as a subcategory or genre, such as Mathematics (Room 500.1) or Botany (Room 500.004). (Dewey categories 000, 100, and 200 are placed on the 10th, 11th, and 12th floors, respectively.) Other room themes include Erotic Literature (Room 800.001), Poetry (Room 800.003), and Music (Room 700.005). All rooms have a small complement of books and decorations that accompany the theme, with 6000 books overall throughout the hotel. Because of this classification scheme, the hotel owners were sued in 2003 by the OCLC (owners of the Dewey Decimal Classification system). OCLC reached an agreement with the hotel enabling the hotel to continue using the Dewey system.
