Forwarded from IATUL -------------------------------- The International Association of University Libraries (IATUL) invites proposals for papers and posters for the 42nd Annual IATUL Conference, presented in a hybrid format from the University of Miami Libraries and the Florida International University Libraries in Miami, FL, USA during 12 June – 16 June 2022. IATUL offers an influential and inclusive community of university library directors from around the world. The Annual Conference is a unique opportunity to share views and develop new collaborations. Papers are invited on the following theme: Weaving our Future: Creativity, Innovation and Transformation in Libraries. As higher education moves beyond the pandemic, libraries are positioned to lead in an environment in which teaching, learning, research, and work practices are shifting. The IATUL 2022 conference will provide excellent opportunities to explore, learn and share diverse experiences. Proposals should consider: • The changing landscape of research: open science; problem-based interdisciplinary research; community-based research; data governance. • Trends in teaching and learning: virtual learning platforms; lifelong learning; education of librarians; digital fluency; critical information literacy. • Space planning: permeable library facilities; incorporating outdoor spaces; healthy study and collaboration environments. • Workplace and organizational culture: telework; workflow redesign; inclusive practices; new skillsets. Proposals for papers should reflect international perspectives and provide insight into regional issues, with the aim of engaging attendees in networking and relationship/capacity building. A written paper will be required for the conference proceedings; however, a range of presentation formats is possible. Poster presentations are also invited. Informatics launches Scite.AI in India -- the Next Generation Citation Database

Informatics is pleased to launch Scite.AI in India – the next Generation citation database that looks far ahead of traditionally known citation databases. The launch program is scheduled as part of the 6th Library Technology Conclave (https://LT2022.org) on the coming Friday, the 7th January 2022, as both physical and online event. Physical event is going to be held in Bangalore at the Hotel ITC Fortune Park JP in Race Course Road, 4-6.30 PM. The LIS professionals in Bangalore are specially invited to join the program in person. The legacy citation databases evolved during the time technology was primitive. They indexed the cited references without the context. For the context of the citation and to determine the intent with which they are cited, the readers had to access full text of the articles separately and read through the article. Eugene Garfield realized this limitation and envisioned the idea of citation marker to classify the cited references based on the context of their citation. This was beyond the technology of his times, and until recently. Scite.AI, a major technological break-through in the citation database domain, fulfills this vision of Garfield by using AI based Machine Learning (ML) and deep-learning techniques. Besides finding out how many publications have cited his paper; a researcher can look at the context in which the citing authors have cited his paper and the intent of citing that paper. The intent of citing in a context is indicated by classifying the cited references based on the contextual information and using three tags: (a) supporting the views of citing paper; (b) disagreeing/contrasting with the vies of citing paper; (c) mere citing. The development of Scite.AI is part funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), USA and the National Institute of Health (NIH), USA. I found this news item interesting for many reasons: It is initiated by senior citizens. It is open 24X7 with nobody 'manning' it. It is run on a 'on trust' basis. A few social workers have set up a 24×7 library on a footpath in Mulund (east) where people can come and pick up books for free. The library at Khandoba Mandir chowk has a collection of more than 2,000 books on a wide variety of subjects, donated mainly by senior citizens across Mumbai. Anyone can pick up a book of their choice and take it away for free after writing down their name and contact number on a register, and return it later. Senior citizens like Sadanand Desai, a mechanical engineer, Jaywant Hargude, retired assistant police commissioner, Deepak Khedkar, a journalist, and Jayshree Bise, a businesswoman, are some of the people who have donated books to the library. https://images.indianexpress.com/2020/08/1x1.png Desai, 73, told the Indian Express: “My late wife and I loved reading and collecting books. There is Kelkar college nearby and the students passing by pick up books on their way home.” Shubham Gavand, an ITI student, said: “I picked up a book related to public speech as I wanted to increase my confidence while addressing an audience during presentations.” Heena Savla, a resident, said: “ I picked up a motivational book. It’s a good initiative and I hope it will help to get people to read books.” The open library is not guarded by anyone and is open 24 hours a day. “Few people said that the books might get stolen, but we are not worried about that.
