by A.Manimekalai 27 Aug '08

27 Aug '08

Dear Sir/ Madam, I am very much confused withthe status of the library professionals in the University Library with respect to the Professor incharge. Is it still in habitual ? If so What is is the need for us to do SLET, NET or PhD? If there is any G.O. available that Library professionals (Head} of the Library is directly answerable to the DEAN/ Principal? If so please let me know. If the branch libraries of the university is running with the Asst. Librarian or Deputy Librarian, is there a post called Professor Incharge is still in function? Kindly clarify and if there is any G.O available stating this information please help me by sending the same. Thanks, Manimekalai -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

FW: Need to Review the Present Nomenclature
by Mailing List Admin 27 Aug '08

27 Aug '08

Date: Wed, 27 Aug 2008 10:45:47 +0530 From: Koteswara_Tumuluru <Koteswara_Tumuluru(a)satyam.com> Dear Friends, I feel its a very good thought and an idea from Prof Mangla which is appropriately ratified by Dr Rao and others. I am also touched by the views of Pradip Das who spoke about the identity crisis for LIS professionals among people. We should give a serious thinking to this issue for uplifting the way we are perceived in the industry & job market. The paradox is that we obtain Library & Information Science degrees from Arts & Commerce colleges in our Universities. I think the bottom line benefit(s) of changing from Library and Information Science to Library and Information Management are that we can attract better inflow of good students to the profession, enhanced self-esteem and the highly deserved 'feel-good-factor' for the young information managers. This is the era of Leadership and the Librarian as a Leader (a Manager with broad perspective, passion, ownership, accountability and a turn for nurturing further leaders), deserves the right nomenclature to enjoy the feel-good-factor and the rightful place & identify in this global workplace/market. I think this as our proactive gesture in catching up with the dynamic changes taking place like in any other profession, in the best interest of our profession, which will be regarded & appreciated by the next generation LIM professionals. Best Regards Koteswara Rao Tumuluru Librarian Satyam Computer Services Ltd -----Original Message----- From: lis-forum-bounces(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in [mailto:lis-forum-bounces@ncsi.iisc.ernet.in] On Behalf Of Dr. M. Koteswara Rao Sent: Monday, August 25, 2008 5:12 PM To: pramod mangla Cc: lis-forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in Subject: Re: [LIS-Forum] Need to Review the Present Nomenclature Dear colleagues, I am happy to note that prof. mangla has raised a very relevant and pertinent issue which is also brooding in my mind for some time. Yes, indeed the 'science' in our profession does not stand out clearly for obvious reasons. In our universities, we have LIS departments under the faculty of Arts and Science also. We also notice that every other profession has a clear mandate and a 'professional calling' which is acceptable and respected by everyone. I think with the introduction of IT in libraries the LIS profession has come a long way both in term of skills used by the library staff to deliver information in non-traditional ways, and the paradigm shift in information generation, storage, processing and dissemination itself. The name Library & Information Management is aptly suitable for our professional courses as suggested by Prof. Mangla. Dr. M. Koteswara Rao Librarian University of Hyderabad > Dear Professsionals, > For quite some time I have been debating with people in the LIS that it is > high time that we give a fesh look to the nomenclature of our professional > degrees. I now strongly hold the view that the word Science in our qualifications has lost its utility or charm and the professional degree should henceforth be called B./M.degree in Library & information Management. This is the need of the hour and our courses should be revised > accordingly. The name Lib.& Inf.Sc. has today become a misnomer. I would like > to have the view of the professionals through this Forum and then we should > possibly plan a strategy to bring about the desired cahnge. > Best wishes, > Prof.P.B.Mangla > > -- > This message has been scanned for viruses and > dangerous content by MailScanner, and is > believed to be clean. > > _______________________________________________ > LIS-Forum mailing list > LIS-Forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in > http://ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/mailman/listinfo/lis-forum > -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean. _______________________________________________ LIS-Forum mailing list LIS-Forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in http://ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/mailman/listinfo/lis-forum DISCLAIMER: This email (including any attachments) is intended for the sole use of the intended recipient/s and may contain material that is CONFIDENTIAL AND PRIVATE COMPANY INFORMATION.
