Dear Professionals, The Friday Talk series began with warm invocation by Pushpa of MLISc around 3.30pm. Dr. Khaiser Nikam Chairperson of Library and Information Science gave a welcome to the guest and all, along with an introduction of Dr. Benjamin Sukumaran IOLS Career Empowerment and Development Kuvempunagar, Mysore. Chairperson gave a brief note about the Library Science has grown in rapid speed. Thirst of knowledge, language and love towards subject maker a person to communicate better. Lecture Report:- ' Communication is life' 'Life without communication is tragedy'. With this great thought the lecture began by Dr. Benjamin Sukumaran. Benjamin explained how important communication is in life. And to communicate better one should have awareness of cross cultural, if not it would be a barrier for communication. "Communication is a process of response to a stimuli on the flat form of culture. " For communication Physical i.e. the Sound body is important secondly the expression and Thirdly acceptation. If intake is good means outtake will be good. There is stimuli everywhere but one should response. Every one's will power is some where one should realize and the will power should realize and the will power should not wasted in judging, but by learning, by understanding etc. EQ matters everywhere. And with an example of, A rich boy and poor boy who were his student 3-4 years ago and their problem and success story of them to Librarians communication is first because they are people to solve or to give the solution and not creating problem by more communication. He must be good at English because Librarians First nature is Enquiry, Second nature is confirmation and Third is Service. Librarians will be there until education is and Books are Source of Information, Travelling is Confirmation. "Fishes in River never get Thirsty". Thus one should identify his strength and weakness in communication and there by to overcome from it reading, learning and better hard work. The session ended with vote of thanks by Hydar Ali. -- Shivakumar H.R. Fw: Looking for Evidence of Researcher Engagement with Repositories
by Subbiah Arunachalam 31 Oct '08

----- Forwarded Message ---- From: Leslie Carr <lac@ECS.SOTON..AC.UK> To: AMERICAN-SCIENTIST-OPEN-ACCESS-FORUM(a)LISTSERVER.SIGMAXI.ORG Sent: Thursday, 30 October, 2008 15:04:21 Subject: Looking for Evidence of Researcher Engagement with Repositories Practitioners, developers and researchers in the repository community have been asking whether repositories are effective at appealing to their primary stakeholders: researchers. It would be great to have a collection of success stories - anecdotes of how repositories have been able to improve the lot of researchers - for appealing to institutional repository nay-sayers and open access agnostics. These should be examples of real wins for real individuals rather than marketing claims from repository software suppliers(!) as many repository successes are due to the library team's hard work and insight rather than the technical wizardry of the repository platform. Please can you email me a short (1 paragraph) success story (or stories!) about how your repository improved the experience of some researchers at your institution. They could be in the form of a user testimonial or described in your own words. I am not looking for tales of mass conversions and hysteria, just very practical stories of repository benefit as experienced by individuals. I will collect these together and make them available for repository managers and others to use in their marketing and advocacy. A cross-platform discussion on this topic of Researcher Engagement will be held at the previously announced EPrints meeting just before SPARC DR on November 16th in Baltimore. If you're planning to go to Baltimore, come and join in and boast about your repository's success, whatever software you use! --- Les Carr Pre-SPARC meeting in Balitimore: http://www.eprints.org/events/preDR2008 -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

*Indian Statistical Institute* *Documentation Research and Training Centre* *8th, Mile Mysore Road, Bangalore-560059* * * *DRTC Seminar* *on* *Digital Preservation: Issues and Challenges* * * *Abstract* * * * *In today's world there is a huge collection of information. Any such information available in the form of document may be unavailable for future needs, if it is not collected and properly preserved. A viable solution to deal with collection and preservation of such information is digitization is now possible with the advent of high resolution scanning mechanisms and powerful computers with large storage capabilities. Libraries are an effective source of information to be shared by the people of all kinds, which are engaged in creating and maintaining digital libraries. The availability and use of digital libraries is gradually becoming the norm for the provision of literature and information in all the fields and research. Digitization has become the buzz world in libraries and information centers. The feature of digitization like enabling high level of data compression and easy retrieval are the factors that have made the libraries to convert their documents, books, journals, monographs, reports containing the text, pictures, audio, video in suitable digital formats. Digital Libraries are catering to information services interacting with online databases of journals and other resources. Digital Library plays an important role in creating, indexing and retrieving the various forms of digital resources. One of the main challenges in maintaining Digital library is the *Digital Preservation* aspect. Digital preservation is to manage the digital information and to preserve and maintain readability and accessibility across time. It is also being defined by set of *Metadata Standards,* which are structured encoded data that help in resources discovery and management of data. Discussions of metadata have largely centered on issue of resources description. There is however a growing awareness that metadata plays an important role in managing and preserving the digital resources. A study is made about the Digital preservation, its process, its workflow, *Issues and Challenges, *various ongoing projects (India and Abroad), concept of Metadata, its standards needed for data preservation. The seminar explores PREMIS (Preservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies) - preservation standard. * * SPEAKER: *Kaushal. K. Giri* 2nd Year Student VENUE : DRTC Classroom DATE : 5th November, 2008 TIME : 2.00 p.m. *All are cordially invited.* Dr. Devika. P. Google settlement opens the Web to millions of books, Mint 30/10/08
by shihabudeen kunju 30 Oct '08

Google settlement opens the Web to millions of books by jeffrey A. trachtenberg & jessica E. vascellaro A sweeping $125 million settlement between Google Inc. and the publishing industry clears the way for the Internet giant to make many millions of digital books available on the Web, with payments to authors and publishers for their use. If approved by a federal court, the deal, struck after two years of negotiations, will let individuals and institutions buy online access to copyrighted, out-of-print works through Google, and will provide free online views of them at public libraries. Titles that are still in print will be available only if publishers and authors agree to include them. "It may be the biggest book deal in U.S. history," said Paul Aiken, executive director of the Authors Guild. Google has already scanned seven million books for its Google Book Search program and plans to make many millions more available. Only Web users in the U.S. will have access to the new services. The settlement resolves a copyright-infringement lawsuit against Google filed by the Authors Guild more than three years ago in U.S. District Court in New York, as well as a separate suit filed by the Association of American Publishers on behalf of five leading publishers. Terms call for Google to pay $125 million to settle claims from authors and publishers for its earlier digital-scanning efforts, cover legal fees and es tablish a Book Rights Registry that will oversee the new accord. The establishment of a registry will enable rights holders—be they publishers or authors—to register their works and subsequently receive payment when their titles are used online. be they publishers or authors—to register their works and subsequently receive payment when their titles are used online. "What this does is breathe new life into millions of books without jeopardizing rights holders," said Richard Sarnoff, chairman of the Association of American Publishers and cochairman of *Bertelsmann Inc., *the U.S. holding company of *Bertelsmann AG.* Books under copyright but out of print will be available for sale in an online version unless the rights holder objects. The deal signals that Google, which has long argued it can index content for its search en gine without the cooperation of media companies, is taking a more conciliatory stance. But Google cautions against applying the same model to similar disputes, including *Viacom Inc.s *$1 billion copyright-infringement suit against Googles online-video service YouTube. "I would not read anything into the structure," said David Drummond, Googles senior vice president of corporate development and chief legal officer. With the agreement, Google is taking a rare step into the business of selling access to media content. Google will enhance its book-search product, which has struggled to gain traction, with a storefront where consumers can buy titles to read online. Prices will be set by the publisher or by a Google-designed algorithm, with the rights holder getting 63% and Google getting 37% of the revenue. The move breaks with Googles usual approach of selling advertising against digital content and sharing that revenue with partners like newspapers and media companies. It also brings Google into potential competition with digital-book retailers like *Amazon.com Inc.* "Its a new model for us," said Mr. Drummond, who nonetheless played down any competition with Amazon, noting that Googles main objective is to build a better search product. Amazon declined to comment. Public libraries will be offered a free online portal to view the digitized titles, while colleges and universities will be offered a subscription-fee service that will enable students to access these books directly from their dorm rooms. The registry to determine payments to authors and publishers will be an independent board, initially appointed half by the Authors Guild and half by the Association of American Publishers. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
