Dear All, INDEST-AICTE and National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (NITR) are jointly organizing a Workshop on “Library 2.0 practices”, during January 15-17, 2009. Introduction Web 2.0, the second phase of World Wide Web (WWW), is seen as an exciting evolution. Web 2.0 practices have tremendous implications on libraries and usher them into a new order, which is termed as library 2.0. Library 2.0 is more about connections rather than collections. It is all about participation. The fundamental 2.0 tools, particularly blog and wiki, offer clear opportunities for libraries and information centers to practice services which are more user inclusive than ever before. It is time for librarians and information managers to reorient initiatives by employing 2.0 tools to provide users an effective service with rich experience. In view of the above trend, the library of NIT Rourkela has done some successful initiatives. To pass the knowledge gained, in the course of initiating library 2.0 practices, to other library colleagues, the library of NITR is organizing this workshop. Focus The workshop will focus on: Wordpress – Blog Engine Installation and Customization, Essential Wordpress plug-ins installation and configuration Mediawiki – Wiki Engine Installation and Customization, Essential extensions installation and configuration Drupal – Content Management System (CMS) installation and configuration Essential modules installation and Configuration Success of library 2.0 implementation lies on user participation. Relevant case studies on the successful implementation of wiki and blog will also be presented. Methodology The workshop will be completely based on practical training with presentations. Each participant will be given a high-end computer to learn step-by-step installation and customization of wiki, blog and CMS engines. Who can participate? Help regarding pay fixation

Dear Friends, I am a librarian working in Mumbai. I want some information regarding pay fixation or pay protection. One of my friend is working as a librarian at pay scale rs 10,000 (Senior Scale) in an unaided institution. Recently she got appointment letter from aided college but her pay scale is fixed as rs. 8000. is there any circular or GR which states that salary is protected when u move from unaided to aided situation. The workshop was inaugurated through a colorful opening ceremony on 5 November 2008, at Senate Hall of the Punjabi University in Patiala, India. * Dr Amrik Singh, educationist and former Vice Chancellor of Punjabi University, inaugurated the Workshop. In his address, he stressed the importance of information literacy training at school level and of the need to promote wider use of knowledge and information through informal channels. Mr. Sidhu Damdami, Editor of Punjabi Tribune (a daily newspaper), in his presentation of a media perspective of information literacy, observed that World Wide Web has taken the shape of 'wild wild web'. He emphasized the need to promote information literacy to save the innocent minds from further damage. He also felt that the information literacy campaigns should be directed towards providing knowledge to the adults. The Workshop (*The tenth UNESCO Training-the-Trainers (TTT) *aims at providing a platform for creating a pool of trainers in information literacy who will impart information and media literacy skills to the graduate and post-graduate students and researchers in their respective institutions across the sub-regions. About 50 participants and 10 resource persons from the South and Central Asia are attending the event, which is the successor of two information literacy sub-regional workshops held in South Asia: - International Workshop on Information Skills for Learning, organized by National Institute of Library and Information Sciences (NILIS) in Colombo from 1 to 5 November 2004; and - Empowering 8 International Workshop in South and South East Asia to Promote Information Literacy, organized by Punjabi University from 3 to 7 October 2005. DLIS, BHU - ICSSR National Seminar On Open Source Library Solutions (OSLS) 16th - 17th January, 2009 Organised by Deptt. of Library and Information Science Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi & Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi About Seminar The rising cost of technology has compelled the libraries to use Open Source Software (OSS) for library automation, digital library and so on. OSSs are developed in public domain by the technology experts for the libraries. The professional community implements the software solutions and renders feedback to developers, which is a real time testing of software. The OSS products are provided with source code for implementation level customization and future development of software. These solutions are often free for use and could be redistributed. Today, there are OSSs available for different library activities which are better than the commercial solutions using cutting age technology. These solutions range from Operating System to specialized institutional repositories. This has made the library services more cost effective and least dependent on commercial software and vendors. However, there is a concern of the professionals over stability of software implementation and continuing support to these OSSs. There is an equal and opposite concern from the end of developers also towards having a sustainable funding for running the software development projects. Whatever the concerns may be, the increased use of open source software among the library community is very encouraging for open source solution developers.
