by Jai Haravu 01 Mar '09

01 Mar '09

Dear Members of Lis-Forum The Trust, Kesavan Inst. of Information and Knowledge Management (KIIKM) in association with Information Professional, a web site for professionals is conducting a brief emailed-survey of library automation in India. The survey instrument was already emailed to a number of professionals but the response so far has been poor. By this request, I would be grateful for librarians who have implemented one or other library software including software from overseas to please download the survey questionnaire from: www.kiikm.org/Survey_of_Indian_ILS.doc The filled-in form may kindly be returned to me as email attachment to haravu(a)newgenlib.com. Thank you for your cooperation. Content Management System - Why Joomla?
by DP Tripathi 28 Feb '09

28 Feb '09

*Content Management System - Why Joomla?* Now a days, there is a common question that which content management system is better viz. Joomla or Drupal or other CMS?. In my opinion, If you are a developer and comfortable with php, fixing bugs and plugins, Drupal will be the best option over other CMS. But, if you don't want to touch the developing part, Joomla can be a best option. Both will meet your basic needs. However, I have found Joomla very easy and comfortable for developing a quick website. Here are some features of Joomla. 1. Installation is very simple. It can be installed easily on Windows as well as on Linux. 2. If you are not technically sound, it is good to start with Joomla. 3. Working with joomla is very easy. 4. It supports PHP, MySQL and Apache 5. It supports multimedia 6. It has a wide selection of free extension. Once it is installed, it can be assigned to different pages. 7. Administration is very easy. 8. There is facility to log in to the site and edit the site directly in browser. 9. Provision for more than one person to be able to edit the site 10. There are lot of open source components that can be plugged in to the site. For ex. RSS Syndication, RSS Import, News Letter etc. -- ************************** D.P.Tripathi SLIA PK Kelkar Library IIT Kanpur ************************** -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Offline Koha installation without using CPAN,
by Anand Sharma 28 Feb '09

28 Feb '09

Dear List Members, We have successfully done offline Koha installation without using CPAN, on Debian. This method is useful where no internet connection is available. You can find installation document here. http://www.kohaindia.org/debian-lenny/index.html This method is also tested for Koha 3.00.01. I would like to thank my company's library automation team (Koha Division). These guys helped me to understand basic working of Koha, which encouraged me to find hassel free and seamless method of Koha installation on Debian without using CPAN. Any one who wish to perform this installation and unable to download due to bandwidth restriction can write to us, we will send the DVD's with all required software and packages. online support is available through www.kohaindia.org mailing list subscription. http://lists.kohaindia.org/listinfo.cgi/koha-kohaindia.org -- Anand Sharma RDG Library Services, Mumbai, India. 091-9870339028,091-9220579647 ----------------------------------------------------- Free Software is a matter of freedom, not cost. Semantic Search Engine
by Shriram Pandey 28 Feb '09

28 Feb '09

Hello List Members “Semantic” is a word with a magic ring to it in search engine circles. The way it’s hyped makes you suspect it is the second coming of search. Now the time has come for the semantic search engines. semantic search engines use all the elements in use today plus Latent semantic Indexing.Latent semantic Indexing is a well-defined mathematical method, which uses pure mathematics to create the semantic cohesion between documents and collections of documents. Some of the semantic search engines are: 1.Hakia http://www.hakia.com/ 2.SenseBot http://www.sensebot.net/ 3.Powerset http://www.powerset.com/ 4.DeepDyve http://www.deepdyve.com/ 5.Cognition http://www.cognition.com/ --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Regards, Shri Ram Pandey - Asst. Cost of training in open source software
by Jai Haravu 28 Feb '09

28 Feb '09

Dear All I would like to add our experience of conducting several training programmes on NewGenLib, another open source library management software. These workshops have to be sponsored by one or other organization who have to pay for the cost of meals and refreshment and in some cases free (or subsidised) cost for accomodation, transportation, fees for guest faculty. In some cases our sponsors have donated to the support of NewGenLib so that it can continue to improve and meet new needs. The charges per participant has been in the region of Rs. 2500 to 3000 which just about covers costs and is not exhorbitant by any means. The Open Source movement can only succeed when it is community-driven and community-supported. Institutions should be willing to pay reasonable fees for ongoing support. Open Source does not mean FREE, it is really about freedom. A good example of how libraries in the US and Australia have provided support to Koha and Evergreen is worth mentioning. In fact, Koha support is now provided by commercial firms in US and even in India. I would also like to point out that, not only in the library field but also in open source products such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Apache, Linux distributions, etc., community support is vital to their success. I believe that librarians in India should actively champion the cause of open source solutions by offering their moral and technical support to endeavours such as Koha and NewGenLib. Managements of Instns., should be told of the long-term cost-benefit of the movement and its benefits to society in general. Thanks L J Haravu Trustee, Kesavan Inst. of Information and Knowledge Management (KIIKM) -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
