Re: [LIS-Forum] Query on scanning Table of Content and Copyright Laws

Dear parinita, I think we can put the table of contents in the digital library. Think! otherwise how the user will come to know about the existing of related material in the library. One more suggestion is before scanning of books better to check in the websites from where we can get the table of contents easily. Example www.books.google.co.in www.ecampus.com Regards Vijayalakshmi J S --- On Thu, 6/4/09, Parinita Samant <parinitas(a)hexaware.com> wrote: > From: Parinita Samant <parinitas(a)hexaware.com> > Subject: [LIS-Forum] Query on scanning Table of Content and Copyright Laws > To: "lis-forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in" <lis-forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in>, "lis-forum-bounces(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in" <lis-forum-bounces(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in> > Date: Thursday, June 4, 2009, 8:50 AM > > > > > > > > > > > HI, > Is scanning and uploading “table > of contents” of books, say in a Digital Library, a > copyright violation? Sad Demise Mr. Veeramalai Sivasubramanian, Librarian, Karnataka Coffee board, Bangalore has expired on wee hours of today, June 4, 2009 in Trichy, Tamil Nadu. He had met with an accident in Trichy on 19th May 2009 and he was under medical treatment at KMC Hospital, Trichy. Since the day of accident, everyone was hoping that he defeats death and will be back to work. But unfortunately death conquered him. He was a highly dedicated, talented young professional. During the span of 13 years of his career, he contributed nearly 40 papers in national and international level journals, conferences and seminars. Recently he had submitted his doctoral thesis to the University of Mysore, but he is no longer there to receive the Ph.D. degree. He was a jovial person; always used to speak politely and had the mindset of bringing reforms in Library and Information Science. On behalf LIS community, I express deep sorrow and heartiest sympathy to the members of the bereaved family and his near and dear ones. We all pray to god that, his soul rest in peace and bestow energy to his family members to tolerate this biggest disaster. -- Dr. Dinesh K. S. HI, Is scanning and uploading "table of contents" of books, say in a Digital Library, a copyright violation? Are there institutions in India - which scans the ToCs and make them available to their clientele as part of the library services? Are there any special permissions which need to be taken for such a service? What have been your experiences? Request your inputs.... CD-Roms
by gayathri sen 04 Jun '09

04 Jun '09

Dear Sujata, We handle CD Roms in the following way, and found it to be very efficient way of CD Rom management. CD's may be added to the library collections in different ways. 1. It may be accompanied along with a book 2. It may be accompanied along with a journal or magazine like Data quest etc. 3. You may procure it separately, independent of the two. Rendering it in the following way is found to be very useful. 1. When it comes with a book show it as accompanying material of the book, but give it a separate identity and a different accession no. 2. when it comes with a periodical, treat it in the above mentioned way, but also add the topics dealt with within the CD (this will be given in a nutshell on the CD), in the note field, or key words field of the CD's database--this will be searchable from your web OPAC or OPAC. 3. treat independant procurement in the same way and give continuation accession no. of the cD's database. Physical arrangement for immediate access is done in the following way: Arrange it serially and maintain it well. Use OPAC to search, and find the exact CD, the user wants and get it at a moment's notice. Hope this will give you some idea of how you can handle it.
